Givi T480 Tanklock tank bag
«
on:
November 28, 2012, 05:23:56 PM »
I received a Givi T480 tanklock tank bag today. Here are my preliminary thoughts.
For those wanting a high quality tank bag that fits to the fuel filler ring, this is a great value. I have admired the Bags Connection tank bags that employ a similar mount, but I did not like their higher prices. The Givi alternative with flange was $150.
The bag is 14-22 liters which is plenty of space. It comes with a clear map pocket that features a recess for a smartphone or GPS. The map pocket can hold an iPad though I don't plan to do that. There are plenty of pockets and well finished zippers.
Fitting the flange was very simple and quick to do. The receiver is spring loaded and snaps into the flange in a second. The receiver is adjustable front to back. I may adjust it back a bit later - it does clear the bars, but not by much.
Givi impresses me once again. I look forward to plenty of use and very quick removals for fuel fill ups.
Here are some pics.

I've been really looking at one of these. Either this one or the 489. Is the 480 somewhat formed or rigid or wil it flop around when it's empty?

There is a plastic internal structure in the sides that keeps the bag pretty rigid. It is accessible via internal zipper, which makes that cavity double as a thin pocket. The inside of the lid is rigid, too.
Some other pics.

This morning I had a small surprise when I went to use the bike. I couldn't fit the key without removing the tank bag first! The bag overhangs the ignition at the flange receiver's middle setting.
Later I adjusted the receiver on the bag to its most forward setting. Now I can access the key without removing the bag. It doesn't impede on my riding position with the bag this far back, but it does create a greater visual overhang at the rear.
Those plastic chickens are old juggling show props.

I got one for my Triumph S3, didn't like the way it functioned, I would not ever expand it, so I sent it back and got the T491 which is a 17liter and like it a lot better. I haven't ridden further than 35 miles with it but I like the quick release.
I did have the one from Twisted throttle for my C14 and didn't like it either so I sold it.
I am happy with the Givi

Glad to hear you are liking your Givi tanklock, too. I had looked at the T491 before buying the T480. I bought the T480 because they said it worked for adventure-type bikes, and I like that it expands. However, it looks like T491 shape could maybe fit the adventure-type fuel tank a little better. I wish I could have tried out both to see if the longer T491 blocked the key or not. Oh well, I'm happy with the T480, though I wish the exterior rain cover pocket was removable.

I prefer a topcase...but if they make a rigid one that can hold an oversized laptop for the Tuono...

This bag fits an iPad just right. I'd need my topcase for a large laptop.
I am using the tank bag and a cargo net in place of my topcase. It's nice not having to deal with a luggage key regularly, or always having that "being followed by a UFO" look.

Thanks for posting your thoughts on the Givi bags. I'm thinking of replacing my old Bags Connection tankbag for something a little larger, and the Givi is a nice (and less expensive) alternative so this is really helpful.

Nice. I want a new bag to replace my worn out NelsonRiggs. Alas neither Give or Bags Connection make one to fit my Tuono. And magnetic bags seem to be the thing now. Damn.

I bet one of those setups would work on the Tuono, unless it had some funky kind of gas cap. All I had to do for the Speed triple is remove 4 bolts and bolt on the new base. Might be worth looking at

My gen1 Tuono has a standard ags cap ring, and I believe it's set back enough from the bars to work.

If you take a look at my first pic, you can see how much adjustability is possible with the T480 receiving plate. With the spare mounting holes above and below, it can be adjusted a few inches either way.
From a quick google search,
here
is someone who put a different model Givi Tanklock bag on a Tuono. I think that is the bag Cognosticator has on his Speed Triple.

The T480 looks to fit the ZX14's tank quite well, builderwill.
