My speedo cable appeared to have snapped this morning on the way into work.

Looked down at my speedo, no action. Had to guess  Headscratch my speed and hope I'm not kissing some cops' butt later
to get out of a ticket.

I've never had a speedo cable break. I'm assuming this is the problem. Funny because I've pulled the inner cable out of the outer shroud and
cleaned and lubed it a couple of times when changing tires.

I'm hoping that I can just get a new cable and slide the inner cable back into the existing outer shroud, or should I install a whole new cable?

Seems like getting at the back of the speedo unit/gauge cluster on the C10 is going to be a day-in-the-shop clusterf*ck, and I'll have to bug my buddy Al for a hand and some shop time.

Anybody had one snap on the old Connie? Hard to replace? Can I/should I just slide the new steel cable into place inside the outer cable tube/shroud?

Thanks.

You can slide the new cable into the old sheath for a quick fix,
but I was able to replace both during my lunch break.
I think i stuck my hand up into the fairing from the right side,
between forks and dash, forks turned to the right, IIRC.

As robert points out, it's not so bad. Pretty quick and easy fix. You can get the inner-cable replacement kits, or just order the whole thing, ready to install.

this is my hammer. my dad gave it to me. he got it from his dad who got it from his before him. it's been in the family for generations. we've had to replace the handle a few times and the head twice but it priceless because of its family history.

Thanks guys. Appreciate it, as always. Think I'm going to do the quickie job to get me through the winter for now. Just replace the inner cable, then maybe do the whole thing in the spring.

Danke.

This. It's kind of a pain to get at it, but not the worst thing you'll do. I swapped mine out on the side of the road during a Mason-Dixon 20-20 rally once, so there's no real need to go to a shop or use special tools.

If this is the first one you've had snap, you're a bit lucky. I think I popped three of them. I kept a spare in my saddlebag.

Headlight replacement on the Connie is a biotch too I learned. Good thing I have fairly small hands.
That takes a little digging in there and contortionist arts to replace the headlight without removing any bodywork.

I know there's a little easy to remove access panel underneath the headlight, I don't know if that will make life easier but I think I might do the quick fix
if the cable extracts from the tube easily in 1 piece, which I doubt.

I'll use my GPS for a speedo in the time being. I usually don't use my GPS on my commute/daily running but I'll have to until I can order the part tomorrow.

Thanks again guys. Thumbsup

I had an 03 that the cable just came loose at the speedo, maybe thats all it needs, a good tightening. It is an easy job for a small handed fello, not so much for those of us in the xxl catagory.  Thumbsdown

Let me guess. It broke about 3-4 inches from the bottom. That's a low spot. 1 drop of water=corrosion=SNAP! Replace the whole thing. Murph has 'em for around $17 as well, IIRC.

Yeah, the cables come loose on the old style Ninja 250s all the time too, so maybe that's it. On the C-10, though, they do tend to break. Just one of those quirks.

Go ahead laugh.

I'll get some 1970's Pontiac Grand Safari Wagon wood-tone sticker material and put "panels" on the Connie,
some good antique Swiss-Army Glacier goggles, my café jacket, and ride through the next PA bike event calling out your name.

Steampunk. Sheesh.

Bike ain't that bad.
