Kriega now makes $75 back armor inserts that fit into their backpacks.

If you go sliding i don't think the backpack is going to stay in place.

My guess is that this may help with the initial impact of rider-falling-off-bike.  A fall from a relatively short distance (i.e from motorcycle seat to asphalt) can crack a vertebrae or two resulting in paralysis, no?  Having said that, I don't understand how this backpack would be a better idea than regular back armor - either inside a jacket or the under-jacket armour type.

Some extra protection between you and the content of said backpack if you chuck it?

If you take a look at the packs that this company makes you might re-think that. They are generally worn with a 4-point harness type system that is specifically made for motorcycle use, they will probably stay put. Whether thats a good thing or not is debatable, but i suspect that the purpose of the armor is actually to prevent the CONTENTS of your backpack from injuring you if you crash. With that in mind the idea actually makes sense, especially if you have ever had the fun of crashing with something in your pockets.

I suspect there are more people riding without back armour than with...and even more without jackets of any kind.
