Goldwing Advice

So, a few weeks ago my wife told me she really wasn't comfortable on the Strom and wouldn't be riding with me any more. Which...ok, might not be entirely bad, but before I had the Suzuki we used to ride together quite a bit. Only reason it hasn't come up more is that she doesn't get a lot of time to get out with me due to the kids. Still, it has now crossed my mind to swap the Strom out for a Wing. I've got a few buddies with Wings, and a couple of them are fully capable of out riding me on their bikes, so I'm not overly concerned about the bike doing what I want. I'd miss a bit of the exploring rougher roads, but I should be able to find a KLR to fill in that gap.
So...are their particular years of Wings to look for? I'm looking at the 1500, although I wouldn't necessarily rule out the 1200.

Speaking from experience, look at the 1800 instead. For handling 2-up it's got it all over the 1500; 1800's carry their weight lower and are better balanced. I dumped my GL1500SE a couple times when executing a tight maneuver with a passenger; never ever had that problem on my 1800's. Due to their age, the 1200's will have you worrying for parts/accessories and reliability on long trips.

Well, that's not really good to hear. I was looking toward the 1500s as they are less than half the price in these parts. If I have to put up my bike AND money, I'd just as soon tell my wife "Well, have fun not riding."

And they're just not even remotely comfortable (for the pillion) in comparison to the 15 or the 1800.

Check out an older K1200LT. Just as cheap and comfy for 2 but handles better and is lighter than a 1500 Wing, plus it has fuel injection and elec shield. For the $4k-$6k range you can't beat it - luckily my wife found the RT comfortable enough so I didn't have to resort to such a behemoth.

Yup, 1500s wallow badly without suspension upgrades. Early 1800s can be had for not unreasonable sums if you shop around and are willing to do a fly and ride. Just check the recall history on the 2001-03 models with the local dealer and don't sweat a bit higher miles on the odometer. I'd buy anything up to 100k miles and not worry if I had maintenance records to check.
Be aware the LTs are very top-heavy and require a longer inseam to sit. They're nice, but....

Timing belts are a pain to change and expensive labor....
Other then that watch for electrical problems as they are a nightmare to find.
Starter replacement requires the engine to be pulled.
Carbs syncs are challenging.(But not impossible)

My wife and I took a test ride on a 1200 Wing a few years ago, she was totally comfortable. I'd actually own one of those before a 1500 - you don't get reverse but it's just so much less of a boat.

On which? The 1200s and 1500s can be done in situ. I haven't done an 1800, and frankly, I don't ever want to really work on an 1800 beyond basic maintenance.

I had a Strom and the wife hated it, too. She LOVES the ST1300 with top case. If you want good lean clearance I'd test ride one with her before pulling the trigger on the GL (or before she falls into love with the GL). For us, the ST1300 is the best of both worlds, though a recent trip to Glacier caused a little friction due to my speed in the twisties.

I'm surprised at the passenger complaints on the Strom. What don't your passengers like about it? I thought the thing had crazy-amazing amounts of space for a passenger, and seemed to have some very comfy ergos back there. No...?

Well, my wife is 6'1", so what is normally a fair amount of space is really not a lot of leg room for her.

Yeah, Mines got a 89mph Govenor on it too....
At 90 I get repeated sharp pain in the kidneys and my helmet starts abruptly slamming itself from right too left.
I'd Buy the ST long before I bought a Wing. (And did)

Wing seems excessive... my wife didn't like my Strom or my Sprint, but she loved both Honda ST's, especially the ST1300. Throw on a Russell and it doesn't get much better IMO.

Let her answer that for ya... take her to a dealer and try one on for size.
