My mom and her boyfriend are going snowmobiling after Christmas.  Any suggestions on destinations, oh neighbors to the north?

Gotta get snow first...best chance for snow between christmas and new years will be Newberry and northwest. There will also be almost every snowmobile in the country there looking for snow too.. they call it hell week.

Ontario,
you can check conditions here http://www.ofsc.on.ca/
I've been up there on three different trips and it's amazing.
I've always gone in late February, I doubt they'll be enough snow at Christmas to open the trails

The location I and friends would head to:  Northern WI (Mercer / Hurley area) or the Keweenaw Peninsula of upper MI (Wakefield / Lake Gogebic / Rockland / Houghton / Eagle River)

Bristol, Wisconsin, just over the border and a little west of 94. There's a lake that freezes up and plenty of trails. Really close by - 40-45 minutes from Northbrook.

Northern Michigan is supposed to get quite a bit of snow this weekend. Rain event for us in the southern part of the state.

Michigan is loaded with snowmobile trails, and it is legal to operate a snowmobile on the shoulder of the roadway in the northern counties.

I like the area west of Cadillac MI in Wexford County.

Snowmobiling in northern Michigan is pretty much a way of life up there...

Probably so, but I was under the impression that you cannot ride a snowmobile on any M road in MI. You can cross them all day long but it is illegal to ride on them. Am I mistaken?

Yes, you are correct. No M roads or I roads. Other than that, its pretty much wide open. Also, most LEO's won't worry too much on the lesser M roads. Same for ORV's in the summer.

It looks like snow is heading our way tomorrow night.  There may be hope for them after all.

Heading up to the Madison area tonight (read being dragged kicking and screaming) with my hooligan brothers-in-law for what sounds to me like a two day long pub crawl on snowmobiles.

Ive snowmobiled before but never in this type of environment.  From what I hear there are no laws governing either speed or intoxicity.  "Wisconsin is the wild west of snowmobiling!"  Great.

Ill be sporting mostly mc gear - an old helmet with vents taped up, JR Alter-ego pants with the waterproof liners over jeans over longjohns etc., and a bunch of layers.

Now dont get me wrong - Im no stick in the mud.  Im looking forward to having a good time amongst these idjits but any suggestions for keeping warm and most of all *safe* would be greatly appreciated.

Cough Cough Cough

I would suggest you look into that a little further. Same laws apply with a snowmobile as with a car. .08 is the rule and max speed is 45 after dark.

Yeah, what Ed said.  Take it easy, you do not want to be the guy that "officially" kicks off the snowmobile season.
