and I came across a 2000 BMW R1100S about 12 miles from me at a pretty good price. It's got 33K on it, a full service history and, amongst other things, a foot peg lowering kit.

What are they like-reliability and rideability?

I am really suffering-I haven't had a bike for over a month!

Here's a pic of it:

There really are no major issues. If its been maintained then buy it and have fun.

The oilhead 1100 is a wonderful machine. If you've got the pounds, hie thee to the seller sharpish and take home that black beauty.  Thumbsup

I read on the Internet that the BMW owners group will force you to grow a handlebar mustache.

They're really solid bikes and a lot of fun to ride. They have a whole lot of "character" too with the boxer motor and clunky gear change which make them special in my book.

...a Japanese manufacturer might take the motor, castrate it to about 110 hp and stick it in a cheaper, heavier chassis with low-spec suspension and brakes and slice an ‘R’ or two off the name. That’s not how Aprilia roll

I rode a yellow and black R1100S and it was very cool.  If I were to get one, it would have to be a red, white, & blue Boxer Cup Replica.

Bit tricky at present. My funds exactly match the price of the bike but I've had no work for a week-I'm supposedly temping but the employer is not sending stuff my way. This could all change in a couple of days-if it does, I'll piss the wife off.

In terms of reliability, I don't think you can do better with a well maintained boxer engine. 33K is just broken in. I say do it, you might live long enough to regret passing it up.  Smile

a good friend of mine had an 1100S for a few years, he also owned an RC51, Hyabusa (sp?), and a Ducati.  All of the others were faster straight line than the 1100S but he said for sheer fun in the twisty roads, the beemer out-classed them all.  The pre-2002 boxers were rock solid and easy to work on.  I wouldn't hesitate on a 2000 model but you'd have a hard time getting me to buy anything newer than 2001 in the entire BMW lineup.  Like has already mentioned, a well maintained boxer with 33K is just getting broken in nicely.  I say pull the trigger then ask forgiveness from the wife.

A good friend of mine in Houston has a '99 model. He and I have done several long distance trips together. It is a rock solid bike with no major issues. The only issue I have with it is a smallish tank that limits mileage between fueling. But that's just me.

i've got 96K miles on mine.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q13/bikerfish1100/sunburst.jpg
only repair issues of note have been the paralever bearings (about a 30K mile wear item, unless you really stay on top of checking them for adjustment) and a failed trans input shaft at 71K. other than that- best BMW i've ever owned (and i've got over 300,000 bmw miles under my butt).great touring bike, great daily rider, great canyon shredder. "the pace" was created with this bike in mind...
do it, you will not be sorry.
