CA registration question for out of state purchase
«

Wife is looking at a 2010 Suzuki TU250 in Arizona, since they were never sold in CA. It has about 5500 miles on it. I'd prefer to do a fly and ride to retrieve, but need to sort two items:
1) If it only a 49 state bike to begin with, will I be able to register it in CA? I've never seen one here.
2) Is there a temp registration I can get for transportation purposes? Past states I've lived in had 10-30 day transit registrations available for a small fee. For CA it looks like I need to present the machine with all paperwork at the same time. That's how my Triumph transfer worked, but I already owned the bike - just titled in a different state. I suppose I also need to find a way to rack up 2k, too. Not nearly as difficult if I can ride it the 1200ish miles from where it currently sits...
Anyone been through this before?
As always, appreciate any insights. I've been calling the DMV but phone wait times have been over 1.5 hours

I am no expert on this but here is what I know.
To get it here you should get a temp registration in the state you are buying the bike in and ride ride ride.
thats the easy part, now the hard part
If the bike has less than 7500 miles (on date of sale) and does not have a sticker that states "This vehicle conforms to US EPA and CA regulations for the model year ....." they will not let you register it here. THe only chance is if you owned the bike before moving your residence to CA (you just moved here and already had the bike)
On the bright side, If the bike has the US EPA & CA compliance sticker the millage means nothing and all is smooth.

Riding 1200 miles on a TU250 may be the biggest obstacle.
+1 to what Andrew stated. If the bike is 50-state compliant, you're golden. If not, it needs 7,500 miles and the bill of sale from the previous owner. If you have more questions, call DMV, they are really helpful (I'm not kidding) and they actually call you back if the wait time is too long.

Thanks guys. The bike is not CA-compliant, so it definitely needs to have more than 7500 miles. That is one of the reasons to do a fly and ride. I do realize I'm signing up for sure death in doing so with the lack of farings, hard luggage or shaft drive
I plan to call the CA DMV again today. Wait times have been too long and call back hasn't suited my schedule so far, but that should change today.
I looked at AZ and it seems like I would have to be a resident there to get the temp permit from that state, but I'll try contacting them as well.

Following up, mostly for future searchers of this topic, the CA DMV says get a temp tag in AZ because they can't do anything until they see the title and the bike physically.
Called AZ - they can issue a 90-day permit for $15, which works well with my need to rack up a few miles to break the 7500 mark. The only wrinkle is that I have to get it in person, which with no Saturday hours means I have to take a day off of work (easier said than done).

As long as the AZ temp permit does not mention mileage, you should be ok.
If it shows that the bike had less than 7500 miles when you bought it, yer hosed.
CA DMV uses the mileage when you bought it, not mileage when you roll in to register it in CA.
