So I'm thinking about giving the XR a makeover- this started with my wife giving me a trail-tech speedo.  You all have sites for plastics?  I'm especially wondering about a headlight setup- the stock one of beat up and pretty weak, and a lot of the aftermarket ones look weaker.  I already have a aftermarket red tank.

Any help?  TIA!

I don't think UFO or Acerbis offers aftermarket plastics for the XRL, only the XRR.  Can't even buy printed graphics sets to dress it up.

As for the headlight, on my DS'd 450X, I used a Baja Designs Halogen unit for about 100 bucks and changed out the bulb to an 80/80 with good success.  I did nothing but night ride for 3 years and it showed a lot of terrain and quite far ahead.  The spread was pretty good too.

While on the Baja designs site, get yourself the smog block off kit and remove that junk to save about 3 lbs.

The junk is already removed thanks to the PO.   Thumbsup

I will check out the baja designs stuff.  Most of the headlight replacement units come with a "not DOT approved" warning and my experience is that many of them really suck.

I'll keep hunting for the plastics.  Right now I have them rattle-canned earth brown, but I am hoping to make it a bit more "sporty" looking.  I can remove the paint, but I'm still left with a beat-up from fender and such.  We'll see what I can find.

Any more help, feel free to post up!   Thumbsup

The guys on this thread http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114834&highlight=xr650l have done a lot of really cool stuff to their XRL's.  It's over 3400 pages now, but lots of cool ideas.

Keep us posted with what you come up with.

Me, I just want to get my pig back on (and off) the road sometime soon.  I was in the middle of a refresh almost two years ago when I had an accident that kept off bikes and out of the garage for several months.

My X is gone so I can't verify if the B.D. headlight had a DOT embossing in the lens.  However, my X was plated for all the years I had it.  At inspection, the place only made sure the high and low beam switched back and forth.

The 55/60 bulbs were lame in it but the 80/80 was just as good as any other single lens headlight on a street bike.  I had a '85 XL600R before the 450X and even the 55/60 on the B.D. was better than the XL's stock unit.
