Today I decided to ride to Bitche, France which is a little towne in the northeastern part of France. The people and the surrounding areas are calles “Bitches”, but that’s not why I went there.

The town is known for its large citadel which you can find more information on via the internet. I’m not a history buff by any means, for the most part I just like riding my motorcycle to different places while in Europe. If I see something interesting, I take note of it and keep pressing, just like with the Citadel in Bitche France.

Bitche (German: Bitsch) is a town and commune of the Moselle département, in Lorraine, in northeastern France. Bitche is located on the Orne, at the foot of the northern slope of the Vosges between Haguenau and Sarreguemines, about 30 km south of Landstuhl, Germany which is right at my back door. Normally it would take me about 30 minutes to get there via the Autobahn, but I love taking the back roads so I had to add 2hrs to my journey.

As usual, I started off from Vogelweh and made my way through Johanniskreuz on the B-48 heading towards Bad Bergzebern and then to Wisembourg, France. From here the signs direct you towards Bitche, and if you miss the citidale you’re blind.

Once I got to the citidale, the entrance was closed so I have to return at a later date to get pics from the inside.  Here are a few I managed to take.

The bird to the left of the photo gives you an idea of how big this place is.

Walking up tp the entrance is something I don't enjoy in motorcycle leathers and boots

Right before the entrance, you can look over and see the city that was protected by the citidale.

For sure these were sleep quarters for the soldiers.

Oh well, there closed, guess I have to come back later.

Cool pics. Take some of the countryside as well when you're out.

Thanks

Some great pix! For those interested in history, the area is an eldorado. The Franco-Prussian war and WWI and WII, etc. mean there are many sites worthy of a visit. I used to regularly ride to Alsace.

Here's a picture taken near Bitche of a Chaffee tank and the pillbox comprising part of the Maginot Line. Many parts of the Maginot Line can also be toured. Also fairly close is the city of Verdun with numerous fascinating WWI forts (which I also visted some years ago, albeit by car).

However, if you ride down from Bitche over the Alsace ridge towards Mulehouse (Moulhausen) you've got some great roads including the Col de Ballon, Col de la Schlucht, Col de la Bonhomme, etc.

With some luck, I may be riding these roads on May 18-19. Should this happen, care to join me?  Cool

Well, if you send Ralf a note from your doctor, he might let you slide just this once...  Wink
