Title: 2016 Year in Review Post by: Acadian Rider on November 25, 2016, 06:50:46 pm Now that my 2016 riding season is over, I am summarizing it with one Ride Report instead of posting several.
2016 was an important year for me. I turned 60 and I retired in April. You would think that after retirement I would ride more but that was not the case. Instead of riding more I actually ran more and finished the year with three races (1 x 5k, 2 x 10k). Maybe I’ll shoot for a ½ marathon next year. Sue and I also did an 18 day trip to Ireland. O.K., back to riding. I rode 11,765 km (7,310 miles) this year. I did two rides that were longer than one day and several day trips in NB, NS and PEI. I took some pictures on some rides but not on all of them. Here’s a summary of the rides where I took some pictures: JUNE 10-19, 2016 This year my riding friends and I decided that we were going to go see an NHRA race somewhere and we also wanted to ride in North Central PA. The race that made more sense to us was the Summernationals in Englishtown NJ on June 12. There is something about seeing cars go over 300mph in less than 4 seconds that appeal to me. We were originally supposed to be four but one had to back off at the last minute because his elderly mother in law went in the hospital. In the end, three of us (Paul, Rick and I) took off on June 10. In total we did 5,082 kms (3,157 miles) in 10 days. Not a lot of pictures were taken. I’ll share some of those that were taken. The highlights of our ride were the NHRA race, North Central PA, the Catskills and the Adirondacks. On day 1 we stayed mostly on the slab and stopped in Sturbridge MA for the night. The I-695 that goes around Boston was brutal. It was not a very good idea to use that road on a Friday afternoon. Stop and go traffic on any interstate is no fun, especially in the heat when you are in full riding gear. On day 2 we made it to East Brunswick NJ where we stayed two nights. Here’s what base camp looks like for day 2: (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%202.png) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%202.png.html) Day 2 The first part of the day was on the slab until we got off in Port Jervis so that we could make the obligatory stop at Hawkes Nest NY. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6460.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6460.jpg.html) Hawkes Nest NY (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6463.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6463.jpg.html) Hawkes Nest NY Not very far after on NY-434 I spotted this sign on the side of the road. I couldn’t help it but stop to take a picture. I have never seen anything like it in Canada. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6466.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6466.jpg.html) (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6465.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6465.jpg.html) Pay up or else says the IRS After that it was NJ-23 and local roads 519 & 521. Those were a lot better than staying on the slab. Our first real destination was the NHRA race. I did not take a lot of pictures having been there before but I did take a handful. This first picture was taken because the name of the driver is Rickie Smith who happens to share the same name as one of the two other guys on this trip. It was a funny moment when we saw that name on the race car. Angelle Sampey won the bike race. After spending two nights in East Brunswick NJ it was time to get the heck out of there. Title: Re: 2016 Year in Review Post by: Acadian Rider on November 25, 2016, 06:54:49 pm On day 4 we rode across PA to State College where we spent 2 nights.
(http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%204.png) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%204.png.html) Day 4 No pictures on day 4 but we did ride some nice roads thanks to the advice of ST.Ners and ST.Oners. We followed the Delaware River for a while (Rte 29 & 32). On the way to State College we did roads such as PA-895, PA-125 and PA-235. On day 5 we did a loop from State College that looks like this on Base Camp. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%205.png) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%205.png.html) Day 5 We made the obligatory stops at the Grand Canyon of PA and the Wellsboro Diner. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6478.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6478.jpg.html) Grand Canyon of PA (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6488.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6488.jpg.html) Wellsboro Diner (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6489.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6489.jpg.html) Wellsboro Diner Base camp looks like this for day 6. It was fun going up and then down the Hyner View Rd. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6490.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6490.jpg.html) View from Hyner View State Park On our way to the Kinzua Bridge we did the Wycoff Run Rd. which was awesome. I had a lot of fun on that one with all the twisties. Feeling lazy, I’ll just copy what the State of PA is saying about the Kinzua Bridge (Viaduct). The Viaduct, once known as the longest and tallest railroad structure at 2,053 feet long and 301 feet high, was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003. In 2011, the engineering masterpiece was reinvented as a new pedestrian walkway where visitors can stroll 600 feet out on the remaining support towers, peer miles out into the Kinzua Gorge as well as peer down into the partial glass platform at the end of the walkway. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6493.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6493.jpg.html) Kinzua Bridge or what’s left of it (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6512.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6512.jpg.html) Lot’s of twisted metal As part of the planning for this trip, we had decided that we would do a portion of US-6 just because. So we did. We went East on it from Smethport to Towanda where we stayed for the night. Title: Re: 2016 Year in Review Post by: Acadian Rider on November 25, 2016, 06:58:07 pm Base Camp for Day 7 looks like this:
(http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%207.png) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%207.png.html) Day 7 On day 7 we did the Catskills Mountains. I had done them at ESTN 2013 but this time we did some roads that I had not seen at that time. There were some roads with fast sweepers that I had seen before but also some narrow and twisty ones that I had not seen. Perhaps the best such road was the Peekamoose Rd. We stopped in Queensbury just outside Glens Falls NY for the night. Day 8 looks like this on Base Camp except that we started from just outside Glens Falls instead of Albany. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%208%20-%20Albany%20-%20Lake%20Placid.png) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%208%20-%20Albany%20-%20Lake%20Placid.png.html) Day 8 On day 8 we rode to Lake Placid. I had already done Lake Placid at ESTN 2009 but this time, as with the Catskills, I did different roads as well as some of the same roads. We started early on day 8 and got on Glenn Falls Mountain Rd which was great. Then it was on to the North Shore Rd (Co Rd 4) where there are a lot of cottages but because we were early, there was absolutely no traffic. It was a struggle to enjoy the view of the Sacandaga Lake while concentrating on the road in front of us, especially at the speeds we were going. I am cheating and using the snipping tool to post a shot of Rte 4 from Google Maps. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Lake%20Sacandoga%20Co%20Rd%204.png) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Lake%20Sacandoga%20Co%20Rd%204.png.html) North Shore Rd (Lake Sacandaga) There were other great roads. I’m not exactly sure where we were when we got pulled over by a State Trooper. We were somewhere on NY-30 or NY-28N. We were in a 55 mph zone going down a loooong hill when I saw a 45 mph sign coming up. While the speed zone was changing, we came up behind two cars that lit up the brake lights. When I saw the lights I passed both cars and Paul followed but Rick stayed behind. As I was passing, I spotted the State Trooper at the bottom of the hill when I was at a point of no return. Lo and behold he came after us. He gave us a piece of his mind for what he called an unsafe pass and told us that 6 riders were killed the previous weekend during Americade. At the end of his lecture he told us that he does not write up riders because he was a rider himself and he let us go. We had enough time to climb Whiteface Mountain. For me it was the 2nd time but the 1st time for Paul and Rick. Here are some pictures: (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6520.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6520.jpg.html) Lake Placid from the summit of Whiteface Mountain (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6522.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6522.jpg.html) (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6523.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6523.jpg.html) Whiteface Mountain Field Station On day 9 we made it to Bangor ME going through VT and NH. Here’s what base camp looks like except that we didn’t stop in North Conway NH. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%209%20Lake%20Placid%20-%20North%20Conway.png) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/Day%209%20Lake%20Placid%20-%20North%20Conway.png.html) Day 9 Hurricane Rd not far out of Lake Placid was full of twisties. Lincoln Pond Rd was also good. When we got to Lincoln NH and stopped for lunch, it was overrun by bikers. I had never seen that many bikes there. I had not realized that it was the last Saturday of Laconia bike week. I think that every biker that went to Laconia had the same idea of having lunch in Lincoln. We had to get in the procession onto the Kancamagus Hwy and we really never got out of it until Conway. There was certainly no speeding there. We stopped in Bangor Me for the night and had an uneventful ride home on day 10. Title: Re: 2016 Year in Review Post by: Acadian Rider on November 25, 2016, 07:04:30 pm JULY 27, 2016
Grand Manan Island On July 27, three of us (Dave, Paul and I) got up early to catch an early ferry to Grand Manan Island in Southwest NB for a day trip. The only time I had been there was once in the 80’s. On Aug 7, 2016 Dave and I did a wharf run two days before the opening of lobster season. All in all, we stopped on 7 wharves. I took some pictures that day and I’ll share some of them. As you’ll see, some boats were ready to go out but not all of them. They still had another day to get ready. I only have pictures that were taken at the Hopewell Rocks for that day. In the end, the Cabot Trail won. It was decided to do the Eastern Shore of NS before crossing over to the Cape Breton Island and doing the Cabot Trail. Paul and I had last done the Cabot Trail in 2013. Joining us for the ride were Dave and Rick. We met Rick who lives in PEI at the NB-NS border for breakfast and then we were off. Because I have done the Cabot Trail several times, I did not take any pictures except for a handful. The trip was done in good weather. In my case, because I am so close to it means that I don’t have to go when the weather is miserable. The following picture was taken somewhere on Rte 7 between Sheet Harbour and Sherbrooke NS on the Eastern Shore. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6760.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6760.jpg.html) Not far after Sherbrooke we crossed the Country Harbour River on a small ferry. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6762.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6762.jpg.html) There they go starring at their phones again. Hey guys, you’re supposed to be enjoying the scenery. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6766.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6766.jpg.html) Not much traffic on this ferry. Once we got off the ferry Paul took the lead until he led us down a dead end dirt road where we had to speed away from the local guard dogs. I took the lead again after that. We stopped at the first place we saw in Port Hastings for the night after getting on the Cape Breton Island. The next day we did the Cabot Trail and came back to the same el-cheapo place because they had given us a two night deal. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6774.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6774.jpg.html) Our el cheapo place for 2 nights On our way to and from the Cabot Trail on the Cape Breton Island we did some roads that I had never done and all was good. We did the Cabot Trail counter clockwise as I like to do it. I was leading when we were just about to exit the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. I spotted something on the beach from a distance that didn’t look quite right. As we passed it I realized that it was a beached whale. Turn around we did and we walked down to the beach. Once we were by the whale, the passing cars saw us and everybody started to stop and walk down to see the whale. I have no idea how long the whale had been there but I suspect that it had not been a long time because there was no smell yet. (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6770.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6770.jpg.html) Beached Whale on the Cabot Trail Some of you may have heard about a business in Cape Breton that was offering free land plus wages for work. I had heard about it on the radio and when we went by it I had to stop to say we stopped and saw it. The story made the news outside Canada as well. In the U.K. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/09/20/beautiful-canadian-island-offers-job-and-two-acres-of-land--but/ In the US: http://www.cnbc.com/2016/09/19/canadian-business-offering-job-and-2-acres-of-land-got-an-overwhelming-response.html as well as in Canada http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/farmers-daughter-market-cape-breton-land-job-whycocomagh-1.3753305 Here’s what it looks like from outside: (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6773.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6773.jpg.html) (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6772.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6772.jpg.html) On the 3rd and last day I split from my friends because I wanted to get home early in the afternoon. I did more new to me roads that were pretty good. Title: Re: 2016 Year in Review Post by: Acadian Rider on November 25, 2016, 07:18:10 pm Nov 7, 2016 Parrsboro NS The Canadians reading this may have heard that the energy from the Bay of Fundy tides are now used to produce electricity. A turbine was deployed in the Bay of Fundy on Nov 7, 2016. I had heard that they were planning to deploy the turbine over the weekend (Nov 5-6) and then take the whole week to make the connections etc… I was busy on the weekend but on Monday Nov 7, 2016 I decided to go down Parrsboro to take a look just in case they had not deployed the turbine yet. When I got there I was about 2-3 hours late to the party. I did manage to get a picture of the tug boat and barge that transported the turbine to where it was deployed. On my way there, I also took some pictures of the wild blueberry fields that turn red in the fall. They are a pretty sight. Here’s a link to the folks that are doing the experimentation with the tidal power. http://fundyforce.ca/ They have a visitor centre overlooking the test site where the turbine was deployed. Here are some pictures of the red blueberry fields: (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6828.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6828.jpg.html) Red wild blueberry fields (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6832.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6832.jpg.html) (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6834.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6834.jpg.html) (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6837.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6837.jpg.html) (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6841.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6841.jpg.html) Tug boat and barge that transported the turbine (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h319/Acadian_Rider/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6844.jpg) (http://s67.photobucket.com/user/Acadian_Rider/media/2016%20Riding%20Year%20in%20Review/IMG_6844.jpg.html) Scale model of the turbine located inside the visitor centre. As a resident of Nova Scotia I've been to Hopewell Rocks and the Cabot Trail many times. Enjoyed seeing them again. Haven't been to Grand Manan though. Title: Re: 2016 Year in Review Post by: Blue is Best on November 26, 2016, 09:07:21 am Real pretty country up there. Good riding.
I hope Miles and Robert didn't negatively influence you in any way! Title: Re: 2016 Year in Review Post by: Orson on December 15, 2016, 01:51:59 pm Great retirement report :bigok:

Title: Re: 2016 Year in Review Post by: Dr Rich on February 07, 2017, 10:09:04 am Awesome for you! I finished the year with 6200 miles and one 5k event. I have had years where I get in several 5ks so I hope 2017 will be better. It's something my wife and me can do together. She walks. I'm 58 and she is 55. I have done a few 10ks in the past but the amount of training for a 1/2 marathon is just too much for me. Good luck.
