Title: Why you should get a dual-sport bike
Post by: jay547 on December 14, 2018, 04:16:52 pm
On a local forum, I have this thread going. That forum is about dead now so I'll post it here and add to it as I go.

There is no report, no commentary, just pictures. These are from November, 2017 to present. Most are in Oklahoma, some in Arkansas, and a few in Kansas.

Yup. +1000

AND!!! It may very well add many hundreds of miles of new roads to ride. Plus you'll become a better rider too as you learn to manage traction.

I'm trying to help you out here. Tell her to go to work to replace the car expense. If she works then tell her to get a part time weekend job for the replacement money.   :bigok:   Then go Honda shopping.     :D

D-S noob here - how do you know where you can (legally) ride off road?

Title: Re: Why you should get a dual-sport bike

If it's not posted and looks interesting, I go in. I've been chewed out a couple times but no cops ever involved. I just play dumb/lost/thought it was a public road/just looking for fishing holes, etc. It's rarely an issue.

The 450 Honda is what I really want. I ride a DR650 so it would feel like a featherweight. I had planned to get one early next year but I don't think it's going to happen now. Maybe the following year...

We do. I'm perfectly content with the riding here. People blow through on the interstate, then complain about how it sucks here and that it's so flat. Ironically, the largest mountain range between the Rockies and Appalachians is right here in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

I've already put on a Seat Concepts seat. a luggage rack, and a Ram mount. Hand guards are next. It certainly doesn't need anything in the engine or suspension department. I might do the tail kit but I will probably wait until I loop it out and destroy it. I may consider lowering it someday - good gawd this thing is tall.

Picked this up two weeks ago.  :D

Mods are - PMR rack, Apache box from Harbor Freight, SilverStar bulb and Garmin power cable / mount for the Zumo. Two mods, planned, to go; SpeedoDRD from 12oclocklabs.com (ordered) to correct the 10% speedo error and a Sargent seat at some point.

I rode it, of course.

That bridge is bypassed. I rode off the new road through the brush over to the old road. Then I rode down into the old ditch line and over to the falls. The worst part was that the top of the rock was slick as snot. I was concerned that I might not be able to ride back out.

I like that set up. ^^^  I want to put my previous tailbag on my CRF but I don't think this old man can kick his leg up high enough to get over it. For now, I'm just using one of my old tank bags bungied to my tailrack.

I do not even try to get my leg over the box. The seat is long enough that as I bring my leg up, I fold my knee so my leg/foot only has to clear the seat.

I'm not sure I can do that. My right femur was badly broken once. Now it is 1 1/4" shorter than the left and has a pretty good/bad bow to it. I'll give it a try though.

Everyone always toots their (bike's) horn. I will too. This is one awesome machine. Excellent suspension, above average engine, quality build, fast and reliable. My only big complaint is that it is so damn tall - but that's the trade off for good suspension. My minor complaint is the range. I'm doing good to get 100 miles out of a tank. Three gallon tanks are available but I don't like the looks of them. I carry a quart bottle of fuel which should be good for another 10-15 miles in an emergency. I recently bought a 1.75 gallon Rotopax that I could use if I ever get around to riding anywhere any more remote than the hills of Arkansas and Oklahoma.

My friend asked if I wanted to watch his grandson practice for motocross? I met them and then his grandson tells me to go ahead and ride his bike. Great. I had to start the bike, pull in the clutch and put it in 1st gear then lean it waaay over to about 45* and jump on it as I let out the clutch!!! No way could I sit on it.

 Had an old bitty flag me down in the neighborhood a little while back to tell me I could not ride my dirt bike (the KLX) on the road. I pointed out to her that it has a license plate and is in fact street legal. She told me again that I cannot ride a dirt bike on the street and she was calling the cops. I pointed to a house a couple doors down where one of the State Troopers that live in my development resides. They have assigned cars/suvs that they take home with them so his Trooper Tahoe was in the drive.  I said "lets go ask Al." (NOTE: Al rides too).  She called me a troublemaker (I was riding responsibly and stopped when she flagged me down) and toddled off to her house.

Saw Al later that day and related the story. Talked to him yesterday evening and he said he went to her house and told her he had multiple reports of an older woman harassing motorcyclists and did she know anything about it. He said she stammered out a no and closed the door in his face!

Lousy dirt biker.

I got the mx bike out today. I don't think I have started it in two years. I aired up the tires, put in about a quart of fresh gas and a splash of K2 oil. It took about twenty kicks but ran great. I made a lap around the neighborhood, then put it back in hibernation.

I think I have a subconscious obsession with the color red.

Bison, yeah Okie Bison.

The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, located in Osage County, Oklahoma near Foraker, Oklahoma, is owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy. It is protected as the largest tract of remaining tallgrass prairie in the world. The preserve contains 39,000 acres owned by the Conservancy and another 6,000 acres leased in what was the original tallgrass region of the Great Plains that stretched from Texas to Manitoba.

Bison are the most prominent attraction of the preserve. An Oklahoma oilman, Kenneth Adams, donated 300 bison to the preserve in 1993. By 2000, the herd had increased to 1,200. The herd now numbers more than 2,500 and grazes 21,000 acres of mostly open range. Bison are rounded up each fall and the excess numbers sold.

We ride through there about once every other year. It's very remote and barren. I like it.
