The whole way over the pass, yes! It was great riding. I think that there were more bicycles than anything else, and they weren't rude about taking up lanes, etc.

Ok, I have a couple of days' worth of writing done so I'll post a bit here. Because of the length of the story and the number of photos, I'm not going to transcribe it all here. I will, however, share a few choice pictures.

If you want to know more, you can always click on over to my website for the full details:  DantesDame.com - Provence! (https://www.dantesdame.com/main/provence-france)

July 17-29, 2021

Saturday
Basel - Geneva - Saint-Ferréol

With Covid still lurking in the shadows - and sometimes not even lurking - the thought of traveling for a holiday had been pretty far from my mind. I should rephrase that: traveling was very much in the forefront of my mind, but tempered with the thought that it wouldn't happen any time soon. Plus, Dan's work is busy and he cautioned me that the next likely time off wouldn't be until September. So when he came home on Monday and said "If you want to take a holiday before September, it should be next week" I was excited; last-minute holiday planning is my favorite! I immediately made arrangements with work and for cat care and smiled at the thought of hitting the road.

July 17-29, 2021

Sunday
Aix-les-Bains & Chambéry

The goal for this trip was to “stop and smell the flowers” instead of the usual “how far can we get with our time off?” We took this to heart and planned to stay in Saint-Ferréol for two nights, thereby giving us a full day to explore the region. Since we had previously visited Annecy we set our sights (ok, I set my sights) on nearby Aix-les-Bains & Chambéry.

Looking at GoogleMaps I was pleased to see that there was a nice loop route that we could take that would give us a view of Lake Annecy on our way to Aix-les-Bains, and then Chambéry was in position to visit on the completion of the loop. Excellent!

Monday
Saint-Ferréol – Lourmarin

Today would be a big travel day. Dan had made arrangements to stay in some fancy B&B in the beautiful village of Lourmarin and while we had so far broken up the distance to get there, we still had ways to go. So let’s go!

Anyone interested in Tuesday? Warning: very little riding was involved  :-X

Tuesday link (https://www.dantesdame.com/main/provence-france-4)

Tuesday
Lourmarin

Le Galinier de Lourmarin touts itself as a high end BnB and we could see that a lot of money had recently been put into the property. Here’s a quick tour of where we would call “home” for the next couple of days.

Wednesday (lnk) (https://www.dantesdame.com/main/provence-france-5) is done - as are the rest of the days!

Wednesday
Lourmarin

We had pretty much exhausted all that Lourmarin had to offer, without making the effort to wander any further afield, at least. We slept in as much as we could – the air conditioner in our room wasn’t much help in the fight against the warm night air, and I found myself sleeping very poorly each night. I would say that at least there weren’t any bugs, but Dan had found a line of sugar ants that made their way from the tub plumbing across to the bed. He spent some time flicking them off the bed covers.

Yeah, actually, Wednesday was a pretty boring day. Let's move on to Thursday!

Thursday
Lourmarin – Briançon

It was time to head back home. Our cats would be taken care of until Saturday morning, so our goal was to be home around lunch time that day. That meant two full days of working our way north and then a final push on the last day.

We decided to try our BnB’s breakfast to give us a nice send-off. This was a mistake. The “full breakfast” was quoted at 25€ per person. I couldn’t even imagine what a 25€ breakfast would contain. Pancakes? Toast? Eggs? Bacon or sausages? Hash browns?. Memories of massive US breakfast platters flashed through my head and it was all too much. We decided to go à la carte and pick and chose a couple of particular items.

blah blah blah - let's get to the roads!

Friday (https://www.dantesdame.com/main/provence-france-7) was even better riding!

Friday
Briançon – Aosta

We were up early and ready to hit the road. In researching our next stop and the route to get there I mentioned to Dan what looked like the “easiest” route, which meant heading over the mountains into Italy and then skirting around Turin. I showed him the map and he pointed to the squiggly mountain roads: “Why don’t we go this way?” Was this really Dan talking? The guy who usually shied away from mountain switchbacks? Far be it for me to deny him what he wants! I planned accordingly.

Immediately outside of Briançon were a series of switchbacks that make make sure we were awake. Or wake us up if we weren’t already.

And the rest of Friday and the final leg home on Saturday (https://www.dantesdame.com/main/provence-france-8)

Saturday
Aosta – Basel

Friday evening

Aosta was another Roman stronghold, and this time the evidence was much more obvious than in the other cities we had visited. According to wiki, they “founded the Roman colony of Augusta Praetoria Salassorum, housing 3,000 retired veterans.” The Romans had chosen a lovely setting for their retirement home. Here is a link to more information on the history of the region. There is so much evidence that the Romans left behind – and the following societies allowed to remain – that it makes walking around the a great pleasure.
