Title: KTM 1290 Super Duke – First Look
Post by: R Doug on November 12, 2012, 01:04:30 pm
From  Asphalt and Rubber (http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/bikes/ktm-1290-super-duke-beast/):

KTM’s pre-EICMA marketing machine continues to churn along, after the company first released a sound clip of its new Super Duke revving its engine in a garage. Today we get a glimpse of KTM’s new street-naked machine, the KTM 1290 Super Duke — a bike KTM is calling a “Beast” on its blog.

More of a concept bike teaser than a reveal, the bike in question appears to be a stunting prototype of the 2013 KTM 1290 Super Duke production model, but KTM has give us some clues what to expect next week: ride-by-wire throttle control, a new chassis, WP suspension, and  a bored-out 1290cc v-twin motor. Your mother already hates it.

Presumed to be using the LC8 motor found currently in the KTM 1190 RC8 R, KTM’s tip about the bored engine shown here on the “Beast” is an interesting point. Is it being used solely for the trade show concept bike? Or, will the production model use it as well, as seen in KTM’s product road map?

We have already seen some deviation by KTM in those model designations, so it is anyone’s guess. More info on Tuesday.

If you wanted further proof that the KTM 1290 Super Duke that was teased last week is a trade show special, and not the production version of the street-hooligan machine, look no further than this spy photo that the Dutch folks at Oliepeil snagged ahead of the EICMA motorcycle show.

Agro-oragne graphics (want), crazy two-toned wheels (double-want), and an Akrpovic pipe for good measure (well…if you’re offering…want), the Austrian brand is known for its avant garde style, but even this bike looks a bit over the top to be a production KTM.

Hat tip to the good folks at Kiska though, we like what we see, and hope that the street bike is at least half as awesome as this. Oh wait, is that a hooligan cam on the tail section we see? Want.

If/when it goes into production, I'm not sure it will make it to the USA. Naked sporty bikes don't sell well here and KTM had to heavily discount a ton of leftover SDs. There was a brand new 2008 on my local dealers floor earlier this year. That said it's a pretty bad ass bike that has got to be a hoot to ride. I can't imagine what the power must be like.

I love it!!!  I'll never be able to afford it though.  Hope it does well.

If I was in the market for a monoposto-backpackin'-sport-tourer, that'd be right up my alley.
I always thought the 990 Super Duke needed more poke.

Should be merged with existing Super Duke thread
