Title: Wanted a big DS
Post by: Scottyfizz on August 27, 2013, 09:58:23 pm
Brought this home a few weeks ago.So much fun and easy to ride.I just know I'm gonna get in trouble.Hoping my friend Oddball will invite me along to the cool kids rides.Needs new tires.Didn't much care for the shitty Bridgestone Trail Wings.

I'll give you $3000 for it so you don't have to deal with the shitty Bridgestones.  :D

put some Hiendau (sp?) K60's scouts on my 990A and they are far better than the Pirelli scorpions I was running before :)

Very cool    I had a blast on my DR while it was around.  I like the MichelinT63s on the DR (especially for the $).

For tires, avoid Kenda K270s and maybe consider a set of TKCs.  Don't ask me how I know...

Nice bike!

My checkbook hates me.Farkling continues. So far I've added.

Pat Walsh skid plate and rear rack.
Powermadd bar risers.
Engine case guards.
Sprocket guard.
Exhaust guard.
Rear brake cylinder guard.
Wolfman tank bag.
Mirror extenders.
Upper chain roller.

Haven't decided what to do with the torture rack seat.Nor tires, but I'll put those two off till next spring. This bike sure is fun too.
I've become a slave to the ProCycle website.

Seat.

Check out Seat Concepts.

T-bone upgrade for ground chuck price.

+1 on seat concepts.

I stopped by their shop and had one installed on my WRr.  Great seat for a nice price from some good guys.  They were working on making their own seat pans for the DR an DRZ when I was there.

Great bike! Today, iI took a ride on mine and came back very content, as usual. I think you will need to decide if you want more dirt or street before you buy tires. Mine has DOT approved Knobies. A concept I don't understand, but they work for me. :)

I liked the Pirelli knobs... rallycross I think.

IMO, just skip the seat concepts idea and spend the extra for the Sargent. The seat concepts was the biggest mistake I made in my build... it was better than stock, but nowhere near as good for me as the Sargent. The second biggest mistake was hard pans... took almost busting my leg on a BDR ride (SG10's are the only reason I didn't) to convince me it wasn't a great idea - two words, Wolfman Colorado :-)

Here's what I did with mine, have since been inducted into the Les Ismore society and transitioned to a KLX250S.

Mine has a Sargent seat and it is amazing - unbelievable how comfortable it is. Blows away the Corbin on my street bike in every way.

I went with the bigger DR because I will use it for some highway commuting to work also. We looked at a KLX250 for the g/f and daughter but it was just way too tall. We ended up with a DR200 for them.

Yup... 28" inseam and properly beefed up suspension... I've gotten real good at 'gettin' my stork on'... and just not stopping works too  ;)

I should get out in the freezing cold garage and take some pics of all the crap I put on this bike. :lol:Still haven't got around to a seat. Now that some of you are dissin the Seat Concept seat,I might have to check out the Sargent seat.

Still not decided on tires.Leaning towards some Michelin Annakee II's or III's or Shinko 705's or Pirellie Scorpions.Anyone running these tires?

Allrighty.I have some cabin fever and what better way to get outside, freeze my ass off and take some pictures of all the useless shit I wasted money on. :D Like I've said,I've let Pro Cycle abuse my checkbook like a ten dollar whore. And for the most part I enjoyed it.

Ok.

Pat Walsh skid plate and generic exhaust guard.

Ready to go.Except for a different seat and some new tires.I'm not sure about tires yet, but I figure on more of a road oriented tire.80/20?Any suggestions?

Guys,
I know the feeling all to well! I've been wanting a big D/S myself...Like most of us we have to go on what to buy but
I have ridden most of the available bikes out there but there was always a trade off , one had too tall a saddle, another needed suspension upgrades another's brakes were not up to par....Trade offs seemed like the norm with the Japanese bikes as well as any other I looked at...Well I found one last year after a test ride on it...I got me a Terra by Husky....It works for me, might not do for a majority of riders but it looks good runs like stink and is loads of fun to ride

I've done several ADVenture rides and we got one planned for end of March anyone on the East Coast that hadn't heard of it here's a link marchmotomadness.com

Nice bike, one of the guys I taught with out west got one... he looked at KLR's, DR's and the G650GS, found all he liked in the GS (literally, same bits) + some things like the spoked wheels. Have fun!

I like the Terra and gave it some thought actually. Is Husqy still in business?I bought this DR as more of a do it all bike, not a hard core ADV style bike.My general riding area is mostly decent pavement, gravel and very little "B" style roads. It's good enough for what I'll be using this bike for.

I jonesed for a Tenere, but didn't have the cash for that. This bike will do.

A few more pics.Warp 9 has some seriously cool DR parts.I'm waiting for them to do a brake lever.I want some footpegs, but Jeebus talk about expensive.

A Wolfman medium Rolie bag for the shit I'll pack and never use.

Yea! The postman came today.More useless shit installed.

Head light rock/gravel guard.

Another Moose Racing chain roller.Although the more I read most big DR owners ditch the upper chain roller for good.I'll leave it on.Sure was a pain in the ass do get my fingers up in there too.

(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/Cybahog/IMG_2006_zpsfe26de65.jpg) (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/Cybahog/media/IMG_2006_zpsfe26de65.jpg.html)

It's finally getting decent out enough to get out there.Still putting off a different seat.Tires, I'm going to need soon.
Any tire advice?

Remove the upper. It can break off and take a chunk of the frame with it. Replace the bolt with a shorter one so the empty bolt hole doesn't collect water and dirt and promote rust.

Looking good.

I think I'm going to try the Shinko 705s on my WRR when I need tires this summer.  I too only need an 80/20 tire, and not really riding any mud.  I think the 705s will work well for that purpose and the WRR owners that have used them are reporting very long life.

A quick update.Haven't done much but change the oil. That was quick and easy and used Castrol.Still needing tires, but seems my wifes car needs brakes too.

I have to say that this bike I'll probably end up keeping as I ride/buy/trade in other street bikes.I always smile when i take out the DR.But the seat effin sucks ass :(

Get over it Tenderloin whisper.  You doing the gravel ride this year?  Speaking of the Tenderloin ride, do you have a weekend in mind.  My calendar is filling up.  The closer to October the better.

Not an update at all. Just enjoying the shit out of this motorcycle. So much fun to ride.I'm going to need tires maybe before the end of the year and maybe not.I've solved my ass problem with an AirHawk seat cushion.

DR peeps? What tires would you all suggest? I'm probably 80 percent road tire and the rest is shitty gravel/B road.

If you are 80% street, have a look at these. Great reviews and if you air them down a bit they are pretty good off road tires   and cheap !
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/15130/i/kenda-k761-dual-sport-rear-tire?WT.ac=SLIsearch

If you want premium rubber that can handle some gravel roads . the Conti Trail Attacks are awesome. I ran a set on my KTM 950 and they were very good in the twists and still had some grip on gravel. Excellent in the rain.

Not a DR rider but my 525 does well with a Pirelli MT 43 on the front and a Heidenau K60 on the rear. Good street manors, smooth and good grip. Gets along does fine offroad in rocks, gravel,  & hardpack, bascially everywhere that you don't really need a knobbys ability to dig deep.

I tried lots of tires on my KLR 650 (Avon Distanzas, Anakees) but found the best dirt/street tires were Mefo Explorers.

I'm glad everyone has enjoyed this thread.I'm going to be a cheap bastard and use up these Bridgestone Trail Wings. They are toast, but I can put off tires until spring of 15. :lol:I've been in contact with Warp9 about more DR offerings and I love their stuff.

I just love this bike except for the seat.Just kills my ass.I've been waiting for Yamaha to come out with a new mini Tenere. And I might just put my money were my mouth is.I've seen pics of a new FJ09 and that bike is nothing like a smaller FJR sport tourer.

Until then I'll (Putt)along with my DR.
