Title: Announcement: ST.N now part of Motorcycle.com family
Post by: UFO on November 06, 2013, 11:45:26 am
Hello ST.N members:

This is a bittersweet day for me.  I am both sad and happy to announce that ST.N has been sold.

Effective today ST.N control and ownership has been transferred to Motorcycle.com (http://www.motorcycle.com) and is now part of their motorsports network affording it more opportunities than Iím able to provide going forward.

There is a laundry list of reasons why this has happened.  I wonít bore you with all of them, but twelve years of history is hard to gloss over.  Iíll try to hit the highlights.  Forgive me if I become long winded.  I tend to get that way when Iím writing.

Why?
I started ST.N in October of 2001 as a personal website to store photos, ride reports, and general motorcycle information.  2001!  Can you believe that?  Twelve years ago.  I installed free forum software on a whim to learn how to setup a server . . . and people just started showing up.  Iím still not sure where they came from, or how they found out, but there was clearly a desire for a community that catered to more mature riders of sport and sport-touring motorcycles.

Over those twelve years ST.N became something I never dreamed of, or was even looking for:  A community of enthusiasts who loved to ride fast and far.  During that time ST.N has gone through two rebirths, approximately 60,000 registered members, 3.5 million posts, and 200 million page views.

As you can imagine managing such a thing takes time, knowledge, effort, patience, money, and interest.  In 2002, when ST.N started to take off, I had all of those.  In 2013 I have little to none of those remaining.

People change, and over twelve years my interests and needs have shifted.  So in bullet form here are the main reasons why ST.N is changing ownership:

ē Motorcycling as my primary interest has waned.  There are so many things Iím interested in that it was inevitable that it fall down the list at some point.  I also have much less free time to ride than I had 10-15 years ago, which has also contributed to this waning interest.

ē I also have much less free time to monitor and work on the site due to professional and other personal commitments.  The days where I would spend evenings writing articles, reviews, or coordinating raffles/giveaways ended quite some time ago.

ē For many years I was able to pay for everything involved with ST.N via donations and Google ads, but recent developments at work (which I posted about on the forums) have caused me to think of my family first and re-evaluate the offers Iíve received to sell the site.  This is something I resisted for almost 8 years, but Amy and I felt this time around it was the right thing to do.

How does this affect me, the former owner of ST.N?
Quite a bit actually.  It removes all the burdens of owning, running, worrying about, and managing a large website.  I get to spend more time concentrating on other interests important to me.  Iíll still be a member, with forum admin abilities, and Iíll still visit and post.

How does this affect you, the members of ST.N?
It doesnít.  All the current moderators will remain, if they choose.  No memberships will change.  The forums themselves will change very little.  Ads will continue to be served, but obviously they will be more directed and targeted to motorsports.  Motorcycle.com has the resources and talent to keep ST.N chugging along uninterrupted.

Whatís next?
Well, as stated above things should continue on normally and smoothly with little to no impact to members.  I expect to see new vendors with specials and group buys for members.  And you should expect to see a less stressed out and less impatient member (me).

Dwayn, the new community liason for Motorcycle.com, will be available to answer any questions you may have about the transition and future plans for the site.

Thanks.
When twelve years goes by there is bound to be a list of people to thank.  So here it is . . .

ē The server admins:  bsd43 (Nevin) and twist (Gary).  These guys stepped up and helped save ST.N after one of its crashes/hacks.  Theyíre good.  What would have taken me months to figure out with excessive hair loss (effective server management), is just childís play to them.  Without their expertise, ST.N likely wouldnít have risen from the ashes last time and would have died back in 2006.  Thank you!

ē The moderators:  Mrs. DantesDame (Colleen), ksann (Ken), Orson, DredheadV2.0.  Thanks for taking up the moderating slack when I wasnít around or available.  Youíll all remain moderators as long as youíd like.

ē To all past and current members.  Some of you have been members for over 10 years.  You know who you are!  You guys & gals truly make the ST.N community what it is, and I hope you continue to do so.

ē To all the members who voluntarily organized national and regional rides and meets.  Well done.

ē And the gentlemen at Motorcycle.com who made this a smooth transition:  David, Mark, Dwayn, and Zsolt.

It may sound odd, but selling a virtual thing was a very hard and personal decision.  I nurtured ST.N from an idea hatched while riding to clear my head shortly after the events of 9/11/2001, to a site thatís been viewed by people from every country in the world.

ST.N became one of the greatest adventures of my life.  Itís brought people together.  Itís inspired adventure and wanderlust.  Itís created tangible bonds and real friendships.  Those are all rewards in themselves!

See you on the site!

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself to you all. My name is Dwayn and I am a Community Manager for Motorcycle.com and will be joining the site and assisting with the duties. I am here to help primarily with the technical end of things and help make the jobs of the current staff easier. I posted a real basic run down to answer common questions below. If you have more questions or concerns please feel free to post them or send me a message.

What are our intentions?

We bring reliability, support and the infrastructure needed to ensure that the community will be around for years to come. Itís our goal to work with your board staff to help provide the resources and required to give this community a broader reach, to attract new members to better the overall knowledge shared in the community.

Will leadership change?

Continuity is the focus here, You as the membership work very hard to keep building this community while staff keep the walls and the roof up in this place; We are primarily here to make sure the lights stay on. Every community is unique and should always be respected in that regard. You guys have established your own unique rules and regulations and a strong reputation that is carried by all of this and itís paramount that we maintain this level of integrity.

What am I here for?

My primary role is to be the technical contact as I said earlier you all built the foundation and keep the roof from falling, I am here keeping the lights on inside. I will be on the forum checking in daily to make sure regular maintenance is all taken care of and keep things running smoothly from behind the scenes.

I do look forward to getting to know you all and this unique community better.
Thanks,
Dwayn

Well, I'm not happy to see ST.n go commercial, but I appreciate what you and this community have provided for the last 10 or so years to me. I've met great friends here, whom are still great friends to this day. And I totally appreciate your decision, and can't say I wouldn't have done it myself.  Good luck to you, Neal.

Thanks for the kind words (so far :D ) everyone!  It means a lot.  This decision was harder than most people probably think.

I'm still part of the community, I have no intention of disappearing.  Far too many good and colorful people here.  ST.N will carry on.

Maybe shah & country will return.

Also, if you have any questions or concerns for Dwayn, please post them.

I've never approached anyone about selling the site.  From time to time (dating back to, oh, 2004-05) I would receive inquiries from people who wanted to buy the site, everything from Joe Blo thinking $100 was a reasonable offer, to legit offers that (at the time) just didn't make sense.  But I wasn't being inundated with offers, just once in awhile.

This final offer was also unsolicited, and based on the uncertainty that came up recently with my job, coupled with the final offer itself, Amy and I decided it was the best thing to do right now.  It also alleviates ever having to really worry about the site again.  It also means members never have to worry about the site again.  The middle years of ST.N was very stressful: hosting, bandwidth overcharges, hackers, crashes, server moves, all that.  It nearly died back then.  I hated all of that...I nearly pulled the plug several times.  There should be no worries about that now.

Thanks to all who made this a great site.  As a new rider (2008) Ithis was one of the first sites I found and one of the best.  Advice I picked up here enables me to progress from rank beginner, never rode a bike, to Iron Butt (Saddle Sore 1000) rider in less than four years.  I hope this community keeps the good work going and the flavor of the site doen't change too much.

I can remember way back when STN felt like a small family.  Now it feels kinda like a really big family...and I hope that doesn't change with the new owners.

Actually I have a question for Dwayn that I forgot to ask.  Others might be interested, so I'll post it here.

Are there plans to migrate the forum database to a new type of forum (away from SMF)?  Just curious.

Sad to see you sell because things rarely stay the same after a sale like this (i.e. acquisitions rarely are good for users) but...

Congrats on the sale Neal.

Most of the hobby websites tend to get swallowed up by bigger ventures if they wish to survive or stay relevant, so it was just a matter of time. Running a small business site can suck hours and weeks from your life, so I can not imagine the time burned trying to keep this site running.

Hopefully you will be able to have more fun here, and enjoy the long winter debates on how terrible the VFR, and how Harleys suck!

For Chris (Mr. Sunshine) et al:

I usually don't delete accounts these days (and I'm not sure what the new policy might be, if any).  A lot of the time those with active accounts who leave come wandering back at some point (but not always), or at least have the opportunity to do so.  Then usually only a password reset is needed, instead of someone emailing and asking if their account can be restored.

I would like to personally thank you for creating and maintaining such a great web site.  I check in 3-6 times a day.  I have been doing so since late 2005.  I have shared a few ride reports and have enjoyed reading so much about motorcycles through the years.  I have met quite a few great people on this board and at many meets.  Thanks again Neal and best of luck to you.

For me this site has been less about being a motorcycle forum and more about being an "introduction service".  I have met some very interesting people through and via ST.N. and some I can honestly call friends. That is the aspect of this site being of real and lasting value to me personally.

So here's to friends, adventures and memories past - toast - and a sincere hope that little of that, important stuff, ever changes.  :beerchug:

Nope, a honest-to-goodness paper calendar, a la this (https://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,80261.0.html#.UnqSnJRATUM)

IMHO, the sale of the site should not affect the sale of the calendars. Any profit (if there is any) could be pocketed (a reward for putting up with us, kneescrubber  :D ) or donated towards a National Meet

:beerchug:

^This.  I have met some great people and done some great things.  I also have learned and passd on learning.  And sometimes just been a PIA, which I am good with.   :bigok:

Thanks for your work boss.  Enjoy life.

WOW! Congrats Neal, I hope you concentrate on your life's current priorities! I think I made 5 nationals officially, including the first. Got a lot from this site and was able to contribute some as a mod for some time, user for a long time, and monetarily when I could. The amount of work put into this by you, mods and all the users was awesome!

Thank you for providing this to us and allowing us to be part of it.

On a side note, it's also seems fitting that a dude with a screwed up name bought the place.  I mean, "Neal".  WTF NEIL?  Thats like "John's" that spell their name "Jon".  I don't trust that shit at all.  You hear me "DUANE"? :D

I am new to this community of motorcycle brothers, but I will say I love it. :D I have only been to one meet and it was the best gathering of moto people I have ever went to. Everybody was welcoming and had a passion for two wheel travel. I have not met the majority of posters but I know their names and love reading (most) what they write. ST.N is where I found info when I was looking for my next bike and I stayed because of the content and discussions that centered around motorcycles. I have become a more informed motorcyclist because of the community that you built and kept running. I truly wish to thank you skipper because I truly do enjoy this place.

Thanks again Skipper and good luck on your other works. I will be here enjoying what you have built, except for PO that place is F'n nuts.

Nothing ever stays the same - change is the only constant in the universe.

I like it here because I could be my normal bitchy real self... and nobody would notice... much.     Or they would be normal and bitchy right back.   I've met a lot of great people in Region 1 and hope to meet some of the characters in Region 4 and Region 6 - you know who you are.  :beerchug: And that guy in Texas who owns a VFR as well.

Thanks Neal - This is a labor of love with all the attendant aggravations that 'geeks with bikes' can bring.  :inlove: Many days it was simply hi-freakin'-larious and my 'reality TV'. My personal watershed moment was the guy who loved his chicken more than his girlfriend. Yeah... not about motorcycles, but community. We are a cranky lot but we can put that aside when someone falls on hard times. Well most of the time.  Sometimes we just call 'bullshit'.  :bigok:

Thank you for creating STN. 'Someone will whine' has made it into my lexicon.

As for motorcycle.com....

So, will STN simply be merged into these forums with all of the past threads moved?

Will we keep our same user names and passwords or will we need to re-register?

For post ho members, will our post count be reset?

Finally, what will happen to the images uploaded to the member's Photo Gallery?

Thanks.

First and foremost thank you for your idea, your time and effort. I've not been here for 10 years but this site became a daily must do when I got home.

I had been on motorcycle.com, before it went commercial and enjoyed it very much. Not so much after the change. I certainly don't frequent the forum. We'll see, I'd hate to think that I'll have to go hunting for another hangout.

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself to you all. My name is Dwayn and I am a Community Manager for Motorcycle.com and will be joining the site and assisting with the duties.

So Dwayn, tell us a little about yourself.   What motorcycles do you own/have you owned?  What's your riding experience?  Where have you ridden?

Humpf.  I could have sworn I was working at a Y2k company when I found v1.

Good job Neal.  I've actually been penning a reply to your intelligence post (in my head) to let you know how wise I think the direction your moving is and to share some personal experiences along the same lines, only more extreme...

This place is the closest thing I have ever had to an addiction.  I got all twitchy when the servers went down over the years.  This is the only forum of any kind that I frequent.

I surely hope that the ride reports that I've done over the years won't just go away.  I kinda used this site as a picture and video hosting site.   :o

Change is good, mkay?

Thanks,
Dwayn

I'd been riding for 12 years before I first signed in here in 2006.  This site has had a huge impact on the bikes I've purchase, rides ridden, and still inspires me to evolve as a rider.

In short, Thank you for creating this place.  Your efforts keeping this place running have rewarded many of us, and are well appreciated.

The forum will not merge.  ST.N will remain ST.N

Thank you for all the work, Neal. You ran a nice little oasis here for adult riders. Well, chronologically adult, anyway. I hope that the opportunities that will open up for having offloaded all the effort will be everything you hope for.

Dwayn, if you can minimize the pace of changes I'm sure that the change of oversight will go fine. It's the community of members that makes the forum. Keep most of us on board and life will be good.

Wow! That's a shocker. I found this place in early 2008 after becoming dissatisfied with the brand specific site I had frequented since I got back into riding in 2004. I looked at quite a few other sites but never felt good about any of them but something clicked with ST.N and I've been here over 5 years now. I belong to only one other forum (audio related - my other vice) but don't spend (waste in wife-speak) near as much time on that board as I do here. Heck, I sometimes close my office door and use TapaTalk on my phone to log on during the day. OK. More than sometimes...but in my defense I'm NOT a government employee...so there.

Without this site I would not have been afforded the opportunity to drink a whole lotta good beer with Ken and my son in downtown Salt Lake City, nor would I have had the chance to meet up with and (especially) eat BBQ with at the GP in Austin a group of great guys from around the country. And it didn't rain! Black Hills and his wife were great company and my wife and I enjoyed our dinner with them when they visited SA last week. Owe ya! Hope to see ya at Indy.

Neal, thanks for all of this and I wish you and your wife nothing but the best of life.

I hope that the magic remains and I can't wait to see what happens when Chloe Moretz finally turns 18...it should be epic.

With regard to changing forum software, something to consider is that one of the things that made STN nicer thank other forums was the software. The simple machines is nicer from a users perspective than any other.

Overall kind of bumbled that it's no longer independent. Not sure that it should have been that stressful but hey, you gotta do what you feel is right. Sail on man!

I haven't been around a lot lately.  Way to busy to keep up on conversations so more of a casual lurker but I'll stick around. Long live the place we know as STN!

Hell, I think we've even had this conversation here before. But I've made some really good friends here and that's something that will never change.

Moto Guzzi is lumped into the OTHERS Section along with Chinese brands?

Perhaps we can finally merge the KTM and Buell Sections in order to make more room for the burgeoning Moto Guzzi Section.

It's good to see the things that matter won't change.

First off I would like to say thank you Neal. This has been a great place to meet friends, exchange ideas, get help, and learn. It is a valuable resource. It has done well under your skipper-ship.

Next, I would like to day I am truly saddened. I know the new owner says it will be the same, but I have yet to see one forum stay the same when it goes commercial, if it stays at all (R.I.P Michigan Jeepers).
What I hope is that this site won't become on of forums where every time the word 'car' appears and you mouse goes over it an ad for 'looking for cars?' appears. Or gets merged into some other motorcycle website/forum run by people  who don't know anything about the subject and if you mention a website that is not under the corporate umbrella it gets removed.

Lastly, I hope the people who make this site what it is remain (or let us know where they are going  :D )

Because I don't do motorcycle.com stuff.  I don't want to see something that I have been a part of since almost the start to do what it will do....become commercialized.

Ok. There are several statements here, and if you're amenable, I'd like to have a follow-up discussion. If you're not, then scroll on by... I'm not having any arguments, here.

I have reasons to discuss this, and let me clear... not one of those reasons involves, in any way whatsoever, defending, supporting or promoting Motorcycle.Com or Vertical Scope. None. We clear on that? Ok, to quote the new Khan... Shall we begin?

Because I don't do motorcycle.com stuff.

Ok, why? And before we go any further, if the answer is simply your second statement ( I don't want to see something that I have been a part of since almost the start to do what it will do....become commercialized. ), then we're done with this point and we can move on to that statement in a moment. If not... let me ask you this: Have they damaged you, personally or professionally in any way? Have they damaged your reputation, personally or professionally, in any way? Have they cost you any undue money, personally or professionally in any way?

If the answer to any all of those is "no", then that closes the point. That, then, simply becomes a matter of taste and opinion, and that's a viable a reason as any.

Now then... on to the heart of the matter...

I don't want to see something that I have been a part of since almost the start to do what it will do....become commercialized.

Here's where I want to have a real discussion. I am involved in and highly invested in a "free for the users" info-tainment venture ( The Pace Motorcycle Podcast, LLC ). We do the show as a means of entertainment and hopefully bits of information now and then. I'm four years into this venture and in that time we have run contests, we have advertised, we have bought equipment and we have devoted our time, money and resources to providing the show. We have good production quality and sound, and that equipment came out of my pocket. We have *** edit *** a lot of ***/edit*** (we're going to keep those numbers to ourselves a while longer and the reasons why should be obvious) downloads each week and that number grows continuously. The bandwidth and hosting bills for those gigabytes upon gigabytes come directly from my pocket. The products we review are 50/50 purchased and donated by vendors. The donations come with certain implicit and explicit advertising hours and dollars attached. The purchases come out of my pocket - sometimes I keep and use the products, sometimes I give them away or sell them at a drastic discount... without ever once being explicitly compensated for the advertising time. A leather jacket is WAY cheaper than, say, a year of advertising.

The point being, here, is that every free product comes with certain "gotchas" attached, implicitly or explicitly.

What if, after four years of doing the show, The Pace Motorcycle Podcast LLC wants to begin actively seeking advertisers for interstitial audio ads similar to... oh... 99.9% of every other net-casted enter/info-tainment show available by what is colloquially referred to as "podcasting" (a term I have actually grown to hate).

Will I lose all my listeners if I add one or two ads per show? If I will, then frankly I'd rather close the doors right now and never produce another hour of the show. Should I beg listeners for money? Or worse, turn it into a fee-for-listening service? Those both feel very tacky to me. I'm not a big believer in the notion of giving people something for free then charging for that product later.

Yes, ads *CAN* become burdensome, and yes, they *CAN* be intrusive and annoying, but you, as the user, have control over that.

How?
* For websites, you can install an ad blocker.
* For audio or video productions, you have a fast forward button.
But at what cost? If the advertisers see no return on their dollar, they will pull advertising and next thing you know... the site/show goes away, or gets sold to a more commercially viable venture and the (previous) owner sits with a few extra bucks in his pocket and WAY less headache every day. Your product is then overrun with whatever-it-takes advertising and subscription offers to continue using the product, you go away, and the product dies slowly on the vine, lamented by the people who sit around and say "I miss [that product]".

Nothing free is forever-sustainable.

I guess what I'm getting at here is, if you're not paying for the service, then YOU are the currency. Click an ad every now and then. Buy something - even if trite - from one of the links. Advertising, as a thing, isn't evil.. We've got 60 years of television thanks to advertising. It's a tool and when wielded with discretion can build a world and when handled with ill intent can destroy that world.

To sum up: Stick around, give it a chance. If you find, later, it's not for you, then so be it.

And a note... for those complaining about the weird Russian Bride ads or "Meet Hot Singles" ads that popped up and might have gotten you in trouble at work (my answer there should be obvious :csm: ), the ads are context and keyword aware. They're delivered to you by things you've got cached or things you see on this site. The whole Shah thing is enough context fodder to get XXX and R-Rated ads put up all day long if the advertisers had them in the rotation.

Again, you, the user, have the power to control this experience.

So, will STN simply be merged into these forums with all of the past threads moved?

http://www.motorcycle.com/forum/

Will we keep our same user names and passwords or will we need to re-register?

For post ho members, will our post count be reset?

Finally, what will happen to the images uploaded to the member's Photo Gallery?

Thanks.

Everything would stay as is. You wound not need to re-register. Post counts would not be changed.

So Dwayn, tell us a little about yourself.   What motorcycles do you own/have you owned?  What's your riding experience?  Where have you ridden?

I have been interested in many motorcycles in the past but have not pulled the trigger on any of them . Therefore I do not ride.

When will the rates below be implemented?  (Seems to be on all other VS sites...which now own S-T.n)

Not that it matters, I donated to STN in the past and would probably pay if it gets me out of any ads....

This is different software. Every site is different. This is not on all of our sites and the ones it is on it varies.

This would not be here. I am not sure right now if this is something that would be added down the road.

I'll try to answer these, and if I'm wrong just correct me Dwayn.

The forum will not merge.  ST.N will remain ST.N

Thus same user names, same post counts, images in the Photo Gallery remain.  Etc.

You are correct Neal.

All new owner/admins say these things above, and then they have reasons why they can't stick to them (which are mostly legit, it is business) and the whole forum that they spent all this cash on becomes not what they bought, but something else. Some leave, some new come in, sometimes it is a new successful thing, sometimes it just goes away. I will watch what happens, and hope I am wrong.

Question for the new stnadmin:
What will happen to posts that link to a thread on the FJRforum or ADVrider?
If I post that the seat from foamass.com is better than the advertiser buttbuddy.com will my post be nuked?

I too sincerely hope that you are wrong, Max.   But I agree with you.  Unfortunately, that is the cycle of business life.   It's one of those truisms, similar to "Name one merger that didn't result in mass layoffs and higher prices."

And yet--after the inevitable happens and STN becomes a hollow shell--some maverick will crank up a new site called, say, Sport Touring Farkled Up to fill the void.  The site will be privately owned and attract a swarm of members.  It will be vital and crackle with energy.  Friendships will be made across long distances.  Mrs. DantesDame will post Ride Reports from her new home in Australia or Bali or some such.  Happiness will spread throughout the motorbiking community.

Then we can all STFU until that site is sold to Amazon.

And the cycle begins again.

See you on the road some time.

While I've made some treasured friendships here, learned alot, and, I hope, shared some knowledge, I simply don't feel all that bad about the sale . . . .  communities change, as do people, and they grow together, or apart.

The STN we have today is far from the place it was when I joined, and, comapred to many, I am but an egg. Everyone's lives can continue nicely, if they wish it.

And ya know what? My motocycle started right up this morning.

But, thanks, Again, Neal . . . .. don't forget to have big fun!

No worries. I wasn't scared off. It was just that your post was the last in many where you said that it's amazing what personal stuff has been posted (sort of). I guess I was treating STN more like Facebook, in that folks on my Facebook feed are all chosen friends, friends I might sit with at a bar and share the good and bad, get a congrats or a too bad, vs the mixture of friends, meh, and jolly jokers that reside here :D

I'd sort of realized that and I'd tried a couple of times to keep out of Off Topic but was unsuccessful so I simply decided to take a break of my own choosing.

I hope everything worked out.

Well, Rita came. We didn't try to bury each other in the back yard or push each other off a cliff :)  I built a nice shed in the back yard, bought a new guitar and a new bass, and a pool table. Rita left. No drama (well other than at the beginning when _someone_ pointed the unfortunate thread at her and I caught a ration of poo), I was a "man" vs a "yes ma'am" and life went on.

So yea, I think things worked out, thanks :)

The above represents my mixed feelings.

I read this the other day with only 4 replies to the thread and couldn't post. I actually watered up a bit as I initially read because I thought I was reading about the end of STN as we know it.

Hope STN doesn't change, at all. I can only +1000000000 the words of our venerable Carbonero friend to the new administration about turning the site into one big Cycleworld.com advertisement-circus. This is a personal place amongst us all, how I see it. Not a business relationship with entities only interested in the almighty dollar that sits in the memberships' wallets and purses. We have a banner and footer ad and an oddball here and there. Not a problem. Fill the site with 47 blinking animated ads every three posts and up down the sides like half of the other forums online and I can see the migration to the Sport-Touring Farkled.com started by somebody to continue in the spirit of STN.

On that note, I hope the core membership hangs around and keeps the place alive and business as usual.

Neil, good luck. THANK YOU for all your hard work and years of dedication to this big virtual red-headed problem child of yours that has become very, very big. I hope the sale puts you closer to retirement and that you can now enjoy some much deserved free time for yourself and Amy. I think we all owe her a big thank you as well for standing by you and supporting you during the long hours of dealing with everything over the years. I'm sure there has been a tremendous sacrifice your time spent together as part of the cost of supporting STN. Hopefully the relief of some of the duties overseeing STN brings some peace and happiness to your life.

You have created something really special that has touched a lot of lives. When you're all old and shit and riding a Gold Wing Trike or a Spyder you'll be able to look back on all this and find some satisfaction that you brought forth something huge, something that really matters to a LOT of people. I hope you'll look back and say it was worth it all......Not many people can say they have bore life into something that has affected and brought together so many people.

Thank you for putting up with some of our sh*t, for giving us a place to goof around, to vent, argue, joke, discuss politics, guns, cats, Harleys, dogs, kids, jobs, money, cops, cagers, relationships, this and that and everything inbetween, to build friendships, plan trips, dream about trips we'll never be able to take and share those trips with those lucky enough to do so, to absorb, learn, live and love everything about motorcycles and everything related to "The Roads Less Traveled".

COG was my first foray into a public forum. STN was the one I chose to stay.

Thank you again Neil, and to reiterate the words of another poster, you'll always be our Skipper and never forget that.

I'll try to answer these, and if I'm wrong just correct me Dwayn.

The forum will not merge.  ST.N will remain ST.N

Thus same user names, same post counts, images in the Photo Gallery remain.  Etc.

I promise you this: If you like your forum software, you can keep your forum software.

If you like your current sockpuppet, you can keep your current sockpuppet.

Nobody is going to force you to change your username if you don't want to.

I found this site in 2002 while looking for advice repairing my recently crashed ZX-11 and never really left.  It's changed and evolved over the years, not always for the better.

I' can't help be pessimistic about the coming change that a for profit operation will bring to the site.  Will we still be able to say the seven deadlys anymore?

Fuck.

Of course it will, it was sold to a pay site and their goal is to make money. The new admin doesn't even ride a motorcycle. I know that's not a necessity  to be able to administer a forum but it's still telling in my eyes.

But the Skipper should be able to have a life too.

Yes he does. I just heard from him. He and Cousin Vee Twain are at a rest stop on I-35 in Iowa, checking the tie downs on the bikes to be sure they're still tight.

He didn't have time to post, so he wanted me to assure you all that they will trailer on through the night, if necessary, until they find motorcycle.com headquarters, and buy it back to give to the members as the rightful owners.

They're going to use all the cash proceeds from the Beer Gardens, ZZ Top concert, wet t-shirt contest, old lady hot dog biting contest, sledgehammer bike bash, bikini bike wash, and slow speed MC keg roll from the ST.n National this year.

Oh, and change the name to sport-trailering.net

So I just wish to add my congrats, Mr. Ulen, (<--avoiding the name spelling issue completely) on a job well done. Your site has provided me with over 10 years of friends, fun, adventure, learning and yes, occasional frustrations. :twofinger:
I'm sure there will be some changes eventually, but seekers after 'adult' discussion of all motorcycles will no doubt coalesce elsewhere should the changes be too dire.

I was wondering, did anyone here know that UFO was considering selling for sure? Did he offer it for purchase to anybody on here? I would've bank rolled it for somebody to keep it the way it was no matter the cost. I know that it takes more than money, but I'm sure there would have been some peeps willing to keep it running. Not me, I more of an investor these days as opposed to a principal especially when it comes to the web stuff. I tried to donate funds before but was told that he no longer took donations. I also offered funds to ST.Org so we can maintain the motorcycle forum family & keep it alive w/o ads or outside funding. Just curious. Cheers

I was curious about this too as I would have considered purchasing it.  I have experience running a forum and a handful of websites and ST.N is the only forum on the intertubes that I would consider taking over.

edit: Sounds like Neal had a solid offer on the table though so can't blame him for going ahead with the sure thing instead of farting around with a bunch of tire-kickers  :)

I don't think ST.n was "for sale". Neal was approached, like perhaps anyone here with an interest might have.  He talked about offers to sell a while back when the ads first started, I do recall pondering that, but with no web experience, I quickly dismissed the notion. When life intrudes, AND you get an offer that just plain makes sense, one tends to move on. It is just that simple. Never forget that this site was a labour of love.

Neal is not the most effusive person on two wheels, and he tends to not suffer fools with much diplomacy, but in my years here I see him as a fellow enthusiast, whose humble ideas for a fun website grew beyond his personal capacity to support it. No harm. No foul.

Veefercanuck800, thanks for the update. I haven't heard from Concho lately and I was hoping that his Harley edition F 150 didn't leave him stranded out  somewhere in that dark night!

Cheers

Everything changed in 2010.  Reportedly, the "labour of love" was bringing in $700/month.

From that thread:

I don't know how many times I have to post this, or how I can express it any more clearly:

ST.N is not, nor ever will be for sale or sold.

ST.N either continues on or ceases to exist with the domain paid for well past the time I'm in a hole in the ground.

Way to dig up old wounds.  That was based on an ad rate card I'd published, but had not sold any ads, and ended up never did.  My plan was to sell ad space and use the money to actually compensate people to write for the site.  Instead all I got was a rebellion and threats from the admins to pull the plug.

So I just threw up some generic Google ads and moved on. That was early 2010 when I was attempting to execute a plan to transform it in to a motorcycle portal   That's probably the point in time when my spirit for the site truly died and it just became a website I check in on daily.  It was a labor of love, and I wanted to do more with it.  Clearly it didn't work out, nor did it even have a chance to get off the ground.  I suppose I could have just ignored the members and done it anyway.  I'm not sure how ST.N would have turned out in the end had I done so.

But I don't feel like re-hashing Jan/Feb 2010, because from a personal growth and self improvement POV it's difficult to go back and re-live a moment when several hundred people kicked you in the nuts at the same time.  People change (usually due to influences beyond their control), and situations change.  Meh, water under the bridge.

I remember all of that well.

Shouldn't that have been a good perspective into the passion of the membership here? I would say that most of us here have friendships with at least one person here outside of this site. The funny thing is that while all of us are passionate about motorcycles that passion ebbs and flows. Some of the members here aren't even riding right now.  I would say that the single thing that we have in common is passion for this community. People are drawn here because they have an interest in motorcycles and stay because of the people here.

Perhaps we should have rehashed 2010 because there were some valuable lessons there that were missed. Namely that it's hard to monetize passion and community.

But what's done is done and people are going to talk about and talk about and talk about it 'cause that's what we do.

Yes, what's done is done, but it would have been an curious option...

This is a silly discussion, IMO.

No matter who bought it, it would have changed, in some way, to some degree, and eventually people would bitch and whine about it, deservedly or not. And the new owner would then be footing a bill in time, money and resources on which he would have - eventually - felt a pinch, and we'd be right back here.

Here's the deal - "contributors" help, but to make it viable that it doesn't cost you much over time, you have to have a reliable form of income... ads make that happen to some degree, but clearly they weren't enough to pay Neal's nut on this place *and* make it worth his while. Now it's an SEP and he can enjoy being a non-paying consumer of this product like the rest of us freeloaders.

I don't know what Neal was playing each month, but I'd guess it's not cheap. I would venture to say that Neal is better suited, financially, than 90% of anyone else here on this site who might have considered taking ownership. Hosting a site like this simply won't get it done on one of the myriad $9/month shared servers from Joe Blow's Hosting Service. The site would end up being slow, flaky and inconsistent.

I really doubt that anyone who would have considered buying this site would have really been ready for the long-haul costs.

And once again, if you're not paying for access on something like this, the money *HAS* to come from somewhere. Ads help, but I"m sure as we'll soon see, a tiered access plan will be put in place because - from a commercial perspective - they simply work better than ads alone.

From someone who works in the hosting industry - if this site was on a shared server, they would force you to upgrade, or boot you. A forum that gets 500 folks online at a time is unfair usage of shared resources. I've run large forums in the past and it was a thankless job. Been there, done that, with the whiners who don't pay the bills complaining when you want to ad some adverts to help cover the costs. So, you folks that whined and cried the first time when Neal wanted to expand the horizons of this site, you can blame yourselves that it's been sold now; instead of whining all over again. Me, I'm gonna stick around and see how things play out. Yeah, it's owned by a corp now, that doesn't mean it has to be bad. On the bright side, they have the resources to keep it running fast and smooth. As long as the new admin is receptive, and it doesn't turn into one of the usual mc.com forums (ugly and full of ads), I see no reason for folks to run off.

I was really looking forward to what Neal wanted to do a few years ago, and I was hoping to end up being a periodic contributor - either myself or via The Pace Podcast. Neal had - has? - way more patience for whiners than I do.

Hosting prices have gone down quite a bit over the years.  But back in the early 2000s when everyone and their goat was creating sites and hosting was taking off...it was not cheap.  Early on I was taxing hosting plans I was on, CPU utilization, bandwidth overages, etc.

ST.N was not on a $7.95/month shared host.  Here are the Analytics stats for the last 3 years of the site. You can glean these from the local forum stats, but Analytics counts things differently.

Well, I wasn't here in 2010 to watch that explosion of not-so-righteous indignation, so thanks for posting the link. Seemed like a perfectly decent forum when I got here in 2011. Evidently western civilization did not crumble to the ground as projected by all the screamers in 2010.

14 pages in, I just found this thread announcing Skipper had sold the ship.

Wow! I'll stick around, as the people are what keeps this place attractive to me, and see what happens.

Thanks Neal - someone else said it, but this is likely the closest thing to addiction in my life, especially in the winter (it SNOWED IN CHICAGO TODAY!!!).  Hope this place did good by you, it sure has by me.(and hopefully will continue to do so).

Regardless of the whiners, know you did a good thing and likely deserve 10x what you were paid for this place, even if it did fetch a good price.

THanks again and enjoy the peace.

Yes, and for some reason in Spanish. I find this terribly upsetting because I don't understand Spanish, I even have trouble with the Taco Bell menu.

For a minute, I was really impressed with the accurate targeting of the ads, because I actually can understand the Spanish-language video ads. How did they know? Did the NSA tell them? Was it my forum name?

But now that I know lots of people are getting ads in Spanish, whether they understand the language or not, I'm much less impressed with the targeting.

Neal,

Thank you for all your time and dedication. I found ST.N when I was shopping for my first bike back in summer of '02. It is the only forum (be it motorcycle, backpacking, drums...) that I still visit with any regularity--or at all, in most cases--and the only forum I consistently visited on a daily basis at any point in time. This is still my first stop for gear info, route info, random pics, non sequitur amusements, and fantastic ride reports.

Thank you for all your time and hard work; it has certainly not been easy on you, but the community you fostered and the information on this site is unparalleled. You have created something that has brought enjoyment to thousands of people, and that is an amazing accomplishment in its own right.

Thank you once more, and best in all future endeavors.

Gareth

I saw some today. The ad positions are the same.  The ad network has changed. So the ads would be different.

I think the only ad that was changed was a existing one that moved to a different standard spot at the bottom of the forum.

I havenít logged on in a couple of weeks. I show up today and find out the place has been sold. Of course this has always been the Skippers site and he can do as he pleases. I canít count how many times the site has crashed, been hacked, neglected, gone down, and replaced by various other sites. Feels like a little of a slap in the face after sticking around all these years.

My feeling is this will be the final nail in the coffin based on how these types of things usually go. I foresee a slow increase of heavy handed moderation which this group is not fond of.

Since this is the only thread you seem to read, I am asking this here. Would you be so kind as to review THIS THREAD (https://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,81402.0.html) and let us know if there is anything you can do to address the audio ads? A lot of us here have a lot of time and energy invested in this site, and I think we are due the consideration. We are not asking for no ads on the site, we understand this is a business now, and we are used to them. However, the audio ads are a bit over the top (particularly the ones in Spanish which are useless to most here anyway), and will drive a good portion of the active member base away.

Thanks,
Justin (Member since 2004)

Care to be a little less vague?

What is VS's stance on linking to other sites? Say that I found a really need ride report on ADVrider.com...would that link be allowed? What does "context" mean here?  :headscratch:

Thank you for pointing that out. What qualifies as 'valid'? I did not reply because I have been on forums that have said almost the exact same thing, word for word. I know what it means, but it will be interesting for others to see what the reply is.

Just in case those of you might be "checking out" based solely on the site's ads, it's worth mentioning there's an Add-On for Firefox (and I believe Chrome as well) called Ghostery that can block the content so the audio never makes it to your computer.

REF:  http://addons.mozilla.org search for Ghostery

I use this, along with AdBlock Plus, also found in addons, and I'm able to get around all this.

For those so inclined and want more advanced features, you can take a look at greasemonkey which allows you to actually customize how the page appears and will auto-load with how you've customized it on subsequent attempts.

For me it has nothing to do with the ads. i still don't see them. its more like, lets say you live in a really cool apartment building owned an run by really cool people and you live there with all of your friends.

Then it gets sold to a flaming douche bag. And you you know he's a flaming douche bag because he bought similar really cool apartment buildings all around the city and ruined them forever.

You gonna wait around just sitting there and wait for the suck to happen?

That is part of a short list of sites that are long before my time here. I guess you can make claims that I am here to cause damage to this community based on something that was done probably more than 5 years ago. I am not here to damage the community or make changes to the site to make it less fun to be here.

Ad block can slow page loading dramatically.  Also, android isn't quite as good at blocking ads.

Regardless, the site is not what it once was.  (IMO)

This is still STN...

This is STN for as long as we allow it to be STN. If the new owners keep THEIR promises and "don't change anything", then it should feel the same as it was a month ago. But if people leave/bash the admins/crap all over threads, then STN will cease to exist.

I've been running Ghostery for a long time now and it works really well.

As for the rest of the negative doom-and-gloom sentiments, thanks for the giggles. I'm a member on another site that was purchased some time ago by the current owners and, oddly, there has been absolutely no identifiable downgrading in the site, no hellfire and brimstone, no mass exodus. In fact, problems with functionality are now addressed and corrected within a day or two of being reported. Maybe you should give these guys a chance to prove themselves before buying a new rope.

I'm not going to address all the 11th hour bashing and trolling (here or elsewhere), because it serves no purpose.  Some of the things I'm reading are a reflection on the community as a whole.  Some of it is rather disappointing from my perspective, but there's little I can do about it except crawl out from under the bus and brush myself off.

The only people who will cause the demise of ST.N are its own members.  As Colleen said, a community is made up of people.  Not servers, or who owns a domain, or what type of ads are being displayed.  The complex and lifeless tubes of the internet are anonymous, but communities have names and faces.  You guys make up the community.  Not me, nor the new owner, or where the 1s and 0s are coming from.

I was just a cat herder in a room full of rocking chairs.

I'm with DD in this wait & see approach.

ST.N has a long, proud history of "hair on fire" posts. No matter how much you try to get them to drop & roll, they continue to run around, fanning the flames more.

All you can do is stand by and wait for the fire to subside  :D

We did make one change so far, you are now seeing one less ad than you have before on the site when you are logged in.

How can I see one less ad when I don't see any? My brain hurts.

But if people leave/bash the admins/crap all over threads, then STN will cease to exist it's proof that nothing has changed.

FTFY.     ;)

I'm going to wait it out and see what happens. I still have a lot of friends here.

Ditto.

Thanks for the good run, Skipper. Congrats on the sale.  :bigok:

Now I'm off to the "who's drinkin' what tonight" thread. I hear the talk has turned to bourbonÖ...

Neal,

Thanks for creating a great place for us to hang out.

You will always be the Skip!

Long Live Chili!! :chili:

what he said!

+1, of course.

Congrats, and best of luck.  I "do" hope to one day shake your hand in appreciation for all the countless hours of lost productivity you have facilitated!

Since the screaming Spanish audio ads have disappeared, it looks like the same old place.  So far Dwayn has kept his word.   :bigok:

Now maybe the doom and gloomists can move to talking about comet ISON and how it is the harbinger of doom. That would be doom laced with cheezy adverts I assume too !!

Pretty much. Except comet ads are in German.

If anything like that appears again PM me! I need to know about it so I can get it fixed. It was not intentional and you where not the only site that some how got these things it was a matter of tracking down the network that was sending ads with audio completely against our terms.

I was just a cat herder in a room full of rocking chairs.

I can't let that pass.  You were far more, Skip.   You helped set the tone about how threads should be conducted, how motorcycle reviews and reports could be done; you showed how a site can be well-moderated without being dictatorial.  You let people be adults or screaming children and sometimes both things on the same day and occasionally even in the same thread.

You deserve far more credit than just being a cat herder in a room full of rocking chairs.

You even made me give "Gattaca" a second chance...but I still hate that movie.

Been so wrapped up in my own little work world that I missed out on all the fun.

After nearly 20 years on the intertubes, I've seen lots of examples of what can happen after something like this. That doesn't mean it will happen here though. Sure hope not. Time will tell.

So let's keep it postive. Neal, thank you for providing me with a wonderful playground for the past 5-1/2 years. My only regret is that I didn't find this place sooner.

Enjoy your new found freedom. Who knows? Maybe the extra time will re-kindle your love of motorcycling.  :bigok:

Just wanted to say thank you. I get more laughs out of this site than youtube. In fact every time I end up in some other forum I end up comparing it to this one. Good luck with whatever plans you have and I am not giving back my STn hat.

Congrats, Neal--wise choice, and many thanks for all the toil over the years.

Welcome, Dwayn! I know you'll shepherd the cats well.

They're definitely coming out of the woodwork now. Nice post Joe. It's been what, 2 years since your last post?

There's a bunch of us who check the forums frequently, but are more drive-by posters than a continual voice. Heck, the only reason I have my post/per day stats were days that I felt like pimping Shah...

I'll be honest, my life has been forever changed by the folks and information I have obtained on this site.  The community here has been a big part of me since 2005.

Thank you for providing this to us and allowing us to be part of it.

I hope I'll be able to continue to interact with STNrs going forward with the new owner.  The friends I have met here are life long friends.

A huge +1 here.! I have to parrot what Doug stated. I'm very late to the party here and just found this out on Turkey Day. Congratulations goes to Neil and Amy for their dedication and hard work on this site. Neil, I hope you drop in more and continue to bust ballz like you normally do. Puts a smile on my face every time!

I'm a little late to the party here, but a big thanks to Neal, the Mods, and the rest of you.  You got me started on this little motorcycling hobby and it has been great.  I expect more great things in the future.
