Title: Let's see your KTM!
Post by: FlowBee on December 10, 2006, 08:26:06 pm
I'll start.  The day after I rode my baby home last summer.   I celebrated by getting another bad haircut.

By the way, is that the "welding stick container" tool box mod I see under the rear?

That's the one. $12 at Home Depot! Definitely a good option for putting tools and whatever else you can fit in there.

I see a 640 or 950 in my future. We will see how well my return to the off road goes this summer.

Great pics !!

I've got one mounted on mine also. It does work great, but I have found knobby tires hit it in rough terrain.

I don't have one anymore, but a long time ago, on a planet far, far away, I had a KTM with different badges on the tank:

Cool Penton

Thanks! I always loved the looks of the huge fins on that little 125. Had several folks ask me if it was a 250 or a 400 cuz those fins made the motor look bigger that it was... OTOH, I once had a Yammie IT400 that would get mistaken for a 175 all the time - when sitting still anyway.  ;)

Picked this 2007 640 ADV on May 10th. After 7,000 kms I am on my third rear tire, second front, two oil changes and adjusted the valve lash twice. Added a side stand, tank bag and better hand guards. I love my VFR but this bike takes me places I would not take a sport touring bike. Now I can go anywhere.  Photobucket

...oh and a 450 SMR too.

I just need to put some soft, rain, or DOT tires on for spring, change fluids, and safety wire stuff.

Just starting to think of getting it farkled - Touring shield, GPS, heated grips, heated vest plug, and I think I've figured out how to mount my Give top box.

Now that the holiday shuffle is over and the weather's turned brisk in NC (12 degrees w/ windchill this a.m.), I explored the interwebs :D, then ran across ST.net today.  Neat forum -- looking forward to really using the shared wisdom in the near future.

Late last year I found my favorite bike ever, 07 SuperMoto R.  I've found my Orange Heavy a very capable light tourer, a quick pseudo sportbike, and a fun gravel/dirt road adventurer.  Thought I'd share a few from my rides thus far.  See you on the road....

Congratulations and welcome to the club. I don't know what a cow-orker is... and I'm not sure I want to know. I don't think cows want to know either.  ;)

Where's your curiosity? And haven't we all had people we work with like that?

(Yes, it's a deliberate spelling, though this particular lass is being sadly slighted...)

I just took delivery of the 2008 SuperDuke shown in the vendors section yesterday. Looks great- except the shipper broke the windshield and headlight nacelle- grrrr. Oh well, it was nine degrees with more snow this morning so riding is out of the question. Plus I'm nursing my wife who slipped and fell breaking her left femur(!) during the last snowfall. 79 inches so far and counting....

So I have been drooling over a Speed Triple for some time. I thought I was going to end up with one but then I saw and test rode my Duke. :inlove:

I test rode them back to back, and since they are both great machines it was a tough decision. In the end I just felt that the Duke had more of that raw motorcycle feel that I wanted.

This bike will be there for the days I want something nimble and fun, and the FJR will be my dedicated long hauler.

2007 Garage queen Duke with only 3000 miles on the clock. Literally like showroom fresh condition. Engine still has the break in smell when warming up.

This is the 690 Enduro I picked up last summer.  It was stock except for the Wings exhaust & remap when I got it.  It's pretty much as farkled as it's gonna' get (billet gas cap is on order, and I have a tail rack that I may use if it helps keep stuff like my tent away from the nuclear reactor-hot exhaust).

Had a funny moment last weekend making a water crossing in the Dawson Forest where the waterproof & airtight Pelican cases dipped below the waterline (most likely from the wake effect) and made the rear get really light.  Hahah!  My waterproof boots worked great until I stopped midstream and had to dismount.

The worst part was that I had an audience when I hopped off the pegs as the bike stopped moving and started to tip.  The only saving grace here was that the bike didn't stall, and said audience was a KLR rider who crossed from the other direction right before me and stalled midway through.  :D  He said he'd crossed there countless times without issue and was expecting the water to be a bit shallower.

Anyway, live and learn. ;)

I traded the Super Duke for a 2009 530 EXC with barley 300 miles on it.  The bike came with Perilli Scorpion ATs on it and the dealer handed me a brand new set of stock knobbies too.  Next up, 17" wheels with street rubber.  :bigok:

I am making good progress on my paper. We could do most of it next weekend if we leave off the Laurel Highlands stuff and focus on the southern 2/3s (south of route 40?). With any luck, we could return to your house in time to watch the MotoGP race from Laguna Seca. All somewhat weather dependent of course. I have Friday off, so a Fri/Sat version is possible too.

Given that you have a 990ADV, an EXC seems like a better fit than a 690E anyway.

I have to admit, your 690 is a sweet set up.  But, I do agree that the EXC better compliments the Adventure.  There's less overlap.

That's a reaffirming photo and message:  "Dear R Doug, I love your bike just the way it is!"  ;)

The last time I saw my old 1098, someone had put the stock exhaust & ECU back on it -- it didn't look at all right what with all the black powder coated bits still on the bike.  Plus it was missing a bunch of the CF bits I'd installed.  All the missing goodies had been sold separately.  Not so reaffirming.  :(

DogBoy, I really, really, want to ride a true sumo like that on a twisty road some day. An hour or two in southeast Ohio would be perfect. I think my savings account would take an immediate hit. I have to think thrashing a sub-300 pound bike (probably sub 250 for that one) with sticky rubber would be better than sex.

Right now I'm on the fence about buying a 2009 Husaberg FE570 with low miles and a spare set of 17" wheels, plus Rekluse clutch and other mods. Only $7500. Designed by Swedes (ex-Husky engineers?) and built by KTM.

Post by: Mookie on June 07, 2011, 08:19:09 pm
Well, sadly right now it's in the shop getting all the locks replaced because some idiot lost the keys

It hasn't been all roses but I do love the bike.  I've had to do a lot of fiddling/dyno tuning to smooth out the throttle, there was a bad hiccup right over 4k that was seriously annoying and I think I've finally gotten rid of it for the most part.  Almost caused me to crash at the track when I rolled on the gas in a corner and nothing happened then it all the sudden tried to catch up with itself.

But other than that it's been great.  It's got fantastic brakes and suspension and just rails around corners.  I feel confident enough to pass people on the outside at track days and I know I've got plenty of lean left over.  As far as the chassis is concerned I'd put it at the top, even over my old Aprilia which I thought I'd never beat.

Plenty of power and it makes a great noise.  And I just love looking at it.  Every little piece is just so well designed makes me glad I didn't buy a Hypermotard.

I know this is a "show" thread, but I have a question.  How did you fix the hiccup?  My Super Duke's throttle was perfect but my 990 Adventure has the same hiccup.  It's very infrequent, but when it happens, it's a pain in the ass (especially when exiting a corner).

Title: Re: Let's see your KTM!
Post by: Mookie on June 08, 2011, 01:15:56 pm
To be honest I'm not sure if it's totally cured.  I think it's partially dependent on weather conditions.  But I had the bike dyno tuned, which help enormously.  It still had a bit of a hiccup, so every morning on my way to work I would dial the fueling up or down a couple percent in the 4k-4.5k range until it mostly went away.  I'd have to look at my mapping but I think I ended up running it a bit leaner in that one spot.  I'll attach my map when I get home.

So, that's existing the carrousel!?  You must have been hauling ass!  Nice.

Taking turn 9 at speed on a bike takes big ones as the runoff is... well.... nearly non existent.    :bigok:

Title: Re: Let's see your KTM!
Post by: Hotbrakes on August 16, 2011, 10:41:09 pm
Yeah, if done correctly you can make a straight out of T7 into T9 with a quick dip to the left around T8.  I've never paid attention to the runoff area other than T4 and the wall.  If you don't look at it you'll have a hard time getting close to it.  Last time I had the SD there both tires slipped out in T9 and the exhaust header scraped but she gathered herself back together and we kept on trucking.

I think Summit would be downright scary on a bike.  I guess it's better now that it has been resurfaced, before it seemed so dang bumpy even in a car.

I'd like to do a track day on the bike, but for now I think I will stick to 4 wheels.

It only took two months, but I finally finished the first round of mods on the 2009 KTM 530 EXC that I bought from R Doug over Labor Day weekend. The bike is officially ready to ride now! I think it's going to get quite dirty on Sunday...

The list of mods/etc:

KTM 3.4 gallon tank
KTM Hardparts skid plate
Enduro Engineering Tall/Firm seat (I need the leg room)
Enduro Engineering bar risers (tall seat needs tall bars)
Tail Rack
DoubleTake folding mirrors
KTM Probend hand guards
HT Racing oil cooler (almost doubles engine oil capacity and lowers oil temp)
JD Jet Kit
Uncorked exhaust tip
Removed emissions/smog crap
Re-routed carb vent hoses to airbox
Changed gearing to 14/48 (from the insanely tall stock gearing 15/45)
Reinstalled the original knobbies
Wolfman "Peak" tailbag (not shown)
Wolfman Fender bag (not shown)
Wolfman "Enduro" tank bag (not shown)
Garmin GPS mount
Fixed stripped gear oil check bolt (not fixed well, but it's not leaking)

The previous owner stripped one of the bolts and threaded a new one on.  Apparently, they are a little easy to strip.

I can't think of any more upgrades needed.  The bike looks good, I can't wait to read the ride repots.

It felt loose when I unscrewed it, which was odd, but I only went finger tight after the oil change, got my torque wrench and it spun. Yeah, it's a very easy bolt to strip. Tons of stories on the web. I tried to tap it with a 1/4-28, but there wasn't much material to re-thread which I thought was odd. The new bolt went in and got to "snug". I covered the bolt in RTV before to help it seal and don't plan on removing it again. It wasn't the stock bolt, so the PO having issues with it explains the weird bolt and lack of material to tap. Seems fine at the moment. If push comes to shove, I will tap it with the next size bolt. No biggie.

There are always things to do to the bike :-) The farkling never ends. Here is the list of stuff I have to consider over the winter:

DirtTricks.com Cam Chain Tensioner ($89)
Fastway F5? Evolution III pegs ($130)
Sicass tail/turn combo
Sicass light switch
Sicass headlight bulb
clutch case saver
Coolant recovery tank?
KTM fan kit
Trail Tech/KTM stator upgrade (fan, GPS, heated gear)
Swap out the stock battery (YTX5L-BS) for a YUSA YTZ7S

Very comfortable sport bike stock, but even more so now. I have Apex 4" risers so lots of room and pretty upright when I want to be. I still have them in tucked clip-on position, but they swivel out to an almost superduke like position too. Also have the higher Puig windscreen (not sure I like the looks as it ruins the angular look, but it is higher than stock).

Have the Ventura luggage rack too for the bike too, just need to develop a reason to use it.

No I got rid of the stock mirrors as they only gave you sight of your elbows unless you were in a tuck. Also I needed to so the higher bars would clear (they mount under the windscreen sub-frame).  They are CRG arrows. Much better visibility since they are mounted on the ends of the bars. No vibration either. They look OK, definitely the way to go for a naked, but I have mixed feelings aesthetically on the fully fared bike. Function over form though.

Blinkers are Kellerman LED Micro Rhombus. Expensive, but look good and very bright... form AND function  :D

Oh, *SNAP*

I've been fighting the desire to get one of those for years. There was a leftover 2010 at the local dealer until this summer, but they wouldn't deal enough on it. They look like license-losing levels of fun.

Gearing up in preparation for a three week tour from Northern Ireland to the UK and then Europe. I bought Holan Nomada panniers for the 1190 as I didn't quite fancy KTM's own panniers. These aluminium boxes are 2mm thick and very well made plus totally waterproof.

The most recent thing was painting the headlight surround to brighten up the face of the bike, which I really like. Next on the list is to get the MSC (motorcycle stability control) software installed. I don't know if I'll just get it done at my dealers or if KTM would do it for me when I visit the factory in Austria on the 9th of July while having a factory tour.  :D

Can I play too?  My 450SMR in front, another friends, then mines previous owners '12 450SMR.  Love this bike so much, it's the best track bike I have ever used.  We get along well  :inlove:

C'mon, I know there's more KTM's here.  They're flying off the floor at the local dealer.

Still packed and ready after camping in WV this past weekend.

Here's some orange love we found in Ecuador last month.

This guy was riding his 690 from Cali all around South America.(http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d74/vafireman21/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/61B3D53C-2BC0-4375-9D92-7B638B8ACF7F_zpsf3qi6ehv.jpg) (http://s33.photobucket.com/user/vafireman21/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/61B3D53C-2BC0-4375-9D92-7B638B8ACF7F_zpsf3qi6ehv.jpg.html)

The price of an orange ride in USD... The Adventure 1190 was about $30k USD.(http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d74/vafireman21/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/CE15F7C5-53D0-4DF2-BEDC-878258E955E5_zpspqlh6ks7.jpg) (http://s33.photobucket.com/user/vafireman21/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/CE15F7C5-53D0-4DF2-BEDC-878258E955E5_zpspqlh6ks7.jpg.html)

Our sad little DR's at KTM del Ecuador(http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d74/vafireman21/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/5F855D88-7D3E-4585-83C1-E274B64E6BFF_zpstm4rziwa.jpg) (http://s33.photobucket.com/user/vafireman21/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/5F855D88-7D3E-4585-83C1-E274B64E6BFF_zpstm4rziwa.jpg.html)

Well...

I had to emulate Hotbrakes. His 'n' hers KTMs in the house. (Someone save me from replacing my MTS1200 with a ADV1190, right? This is the RIGHT place to ask that. I'm in REAL trouble if the SD1290 GT appears as promised...)

But. On to the pictures. :)

How does she like it?  They didn't sit in the dealership long enough for us to even have a chance at picking one up.

Loves it! Light, zippy, and just all around fun. Unsurprisingly, it turns incredibly quickly. Surprisingly peaky, but it is a really over square single. Pretty comfy, though the rear is apparently soft (progressive) even for a 120lb rider.

There's been so irritating QC issues (blinker stopped working, battery cover latch is sticking)  that may be new model, may be manufacturing quality.

I can at least ride it, unlike the Duke 390.
(Interestingly, a friend with a 'few' exotic bikes, including a Tesi 1D, D16RR, RC45, RC30, Mito 125, etc just posted on Facecrack that his new Duke 390 is his current favourite canyon carver).

It is a bit small for me, as a true lanky git.

I have to admit going back and looking at these pics from time to time. Love that bike.

Sure enough. A new addition to the Orange fleet and farewell to my old 525EXC. The 1190R has a new little brother. I think is going to make an excellent lightweight ADV bike with a few mods.
