xx Riding Swiss passes - does it ever get old? | 14 Jul 13

June 13, 2013

Almost two weeks prior I had been led by a local across some of Switzerland’s most coveted and famous motorcycle riding roads. Now it was my turn to lead. Bob (from the ride to Le Grand Balloon) and Dan were excited to see these roads for themselves and we set aside Saturday for the fun.

We had been advised to get an early start, as many other riders (and drivers and sightseers) would have the same idea. That in mind, we agreed to meet at 6:30 am and make quick work of the autobahn between here and Olten. From there it would be noth...

xx Selling the House and Going to California. Electrifying! | 11 Jul 13

In 1968, when my wife Page was seven years old, her folks built a vacation house on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.  They had four kids (Mark, Ross, Page, and Sally) so it had three bedrooms, including one extra large dorm style bedroom for the kids and two bathrooms.  Although it might have been deluxe accommodations by the standards of the time, it is now considered modest.

In 1968 a carport was enough.

Page has a mental lockerful of childhood memories that revolve around this house.  On Friday nights the family would pile in the Ford Country Squire, complete with wood side panels, and drive up to the cabin from their house in San Francisco.  The boys would go skiing at Incline in t...

xx The French Alps & Tuscany: A picture trip report (long) | 10 Jul 13

It's that time of year again. Ready for a trip. Smile On Saturday the 22nd of June we left, heading south. First stop was near Verdun to visit the WW1 memorial site. Massively impressive.

While we were there, a platoon of French military came marching up for some history lessons.

xx My child-free trip to South Lake Tahoe | 09 Jul 13

I am on a road trip!  My already tenuous grasp on sanity was weakening with every passing day, so I convinced Peter to be a stay-at-home dad for four days.  The goal is for me to be A Real Person and remember what life is like when one talks to adults and does not have to read “The Lost (and Found) Balloon” and “Hop on Pop” upwards of 20 times per day.

So, this morning I hopped on the Ninjette and aimed east-ish.  My first stop was the Stockton Rural Cemetery (7 points for the Equinox to Equinox Rally!).  I didn’t take any photos between my house and Stockton because no one wants to waste their time looking at photos of hot East Bay interstates.

Between Stockton and Jackson; yes, it’s as hot as it looks.  In the midwest, that scenery ...

Ride Report 5/4/2013:

An inmate reached out to me after reading one of my ride reports. Gord, who lives in Canada, would be attending a wedding in a neighboring state and had decided to bring his Vee so that he could spend a week riding in the southeastern United States. Gord asked for my assistance with the selection of the best motorcycling roads in the area. I told Gord that I'd not only be happy to plan some routes for him, but that I'd also be happy to join him for 4 days.

I carved up some routes and a plan quickly fell together.

Gord would be attending a wedding on the other end of North Carolina. His plan was to leave Hampstead, NC on Friday and ride to Clemson, SC. We would meet...

xx Our Trip through Tuscany, Sardinia, and Corsica | 26 May 13

This spring my wife and I celebrated our anniversary, birthdays, and Christmas with a motorcycle tour in Europe.  This time it would be the Tuscany, Sardinia, and Corsica Tour through Adriatic Mototours.  The tour started in Mestre, Italy, which is on the mainland across from Venice.   It wound its way through Tuscany to the west coast, where we caught an overnight ferry to Sardinia.  After riding a couple of days on Sardinia, another ferry took us to Corsica for a few days, and then a final ferry took us back to the Italian mainland for the final dash back to Mestre (Venice).

We decide to arrive early and hang out in Venice for a ...

xx Passwang - first steps in Switzerland | 20 May 13

Today Dan and I took a couple of hours to head out on a shake down ride on the motorcycles. We kept it short simply because it was the first time out, the weather wasn't all that great and we got a late start. But it was a great ride and really showed us that perceived concerns about traveling on Swiss roads are entirely unwarranted.

Our biggest experiment today (other than the motorcycles themselves) was to try our new Sena communication systems. We had purchased them just before selling the bikes in New Jersey and hadn't had the chance to really test them out before they got packed up. The headsets were great! Incredibl...

xx Wildflowers and Wild Bikes at The Quail | 08 May 13

Last weekend I was scheduled to attend my riding group's Wildflower Ride to The Hacienda at Fort Hunter Leggett. While I did make part of the ride, I had an unexpected and delightful detour along the way.

Brent, Dorothy, and Geoff with a stunning Norton they had restored and would be exhibiting at the show...

Some friends, Dorothy, Geoff, and Brent, had bikes exhibited at The Quail Gathering in Carmel, an annual event showcasing motorcycles from the past, present and future... Dorothy told me about a group ride on Friday morning with all the entry bikes and I asked if I could tag along for a bit before meeting up wit...
