Is your helmet the right size?

Stumbled on this video and watched it and I'm glad I did. Riding for 52 years and been buying helmets that don't fit right, as in way too loose. I usually wear an XXL helmet, after watching this I bought a cheap XL just to try it out........and guess what........the tighter fit keeps the noise out and just works. YMMV but its an interesting ten minutes.

I heard years ago that helmets were to be fit "snug". That's how I wear mine. And in weather 60* or lower I wear one of those balacava(sp?) too.

Good topic. I've been riding for 50 years too and always had "good" gear including helmets, but until I was fitted by a very knowledgeable rep for a new arai at a bike show 8-9 years ago, I never had a proper fit. The correct long oval shape combined with proper sizing was a revelation in comfort and I just felt better knowing the damn $$ thing would work much better if needed.

In short, when your helmet is on and fits right, you should hold your helmet and try to turn your head, and look up and down, and your head shouldn't turn any more than your natural skin movement.

You might be able to get a better fitting helmet without buying a new one. I "upgraded" my Arai by swapping out the interior paddings with thicker pads. Did the trick.

Fit is one of the benefits of buying from an authorized Arai dealer.

Kinda disappointing vid. No real info on helmet fitting, how/where to measure, or even discussion of head shape.
I'm due for a new helmet. Last go round I tried a Scorpion with an air bladder behind the cheek pads. Cool idea that did let you customize the snugness of the fit by pumping it up, but it tended to lose pressure. Otherwise seemed like an OK helmet.

Seeing as I am not terribly far from Revzilla, I think I will go there for my next helmet. Seems like the trick is to really find a place that has a wide selection and I repeatedly hear about how great their staff is. While I like my Symax, I wonder if something with a better fit would be more comfortable.

The Service Pavilion is just outside Lancaster if your looking for an Arai,I got fitted by them and went from a large to a medium and it has made a big difference on noise and the helmet moving at speed.

Not necessarily. All of my helmets for the past 15 years or more have been purchased online. I try them on for fit at various local shops but with their retail pricing, typically over a hundred+ more than online prices, I just cannot waste that much money. Online sellers are business people too and I'd like to pay as little as possible for the exact same item. I always confirm what the manufacture dates are so I don't get a new (old) helmet, same as when I check the dates on those I try on.

In my experience head shape is as important as size. Finally found my answer with the Arai Signet-Q. I don't know if it is lack of brains on the side of my head, or my eyeballs popping out when I come in to a turn to hot have pulled my cranium forward, but I have an elongated head. I've tried a number of other helmets over the years, and when mistakenly purchased one that fit my cheeks and side of my head correctly so it didn't move around, I'd always be pulling out the forehead liner and be digging out a quarter to half an inch of Styrofoam in the front of the helmet before I could ride in comfort. My Signet-Q is my first helmet that still has all of the protective Styrofoam in it.
