 Sad

My good friend and general goodwill ambassador for LD riding Tom Melchild has passed away due to complications from cancer. We have lost so much with his passing...

Before he passed on he allowed several of us to take over the Cal 24 rally this year. It will be held in his honor.

Very sad. I only know him by reputation and some exchanges here, but the guy gave a ton to the LD world. RIP.    Sad

Just saw this elsewhere and came to post up.  Never met Tom - but know about his rally and contributions to the rally community.

I will not likely be able to make the rally this year - but I might try to ride up to the start to lend support and see the riders off.

Anyone here doing the Cal24 from Roseville?

» Tom Melchild

    From Bob Mutchler (4/12/2015):

Last night we lost another of our Legends, Tom Melchild, from complications caused by cancer. Tom's wish was to see the CAL24 continue so, with that in mind, three of us, Mark Crane, Sean Smith and myself have committed to putting on the biggest and best CAL24 ever. Tom was also a staunch supporter of PolioPlus over the past many years and we will continue that tradition this year. Go to www.cal24.com to register and honor one of the best.

» Cal24 2015 Announcement

We are proud to announce that the 2015 Cal 24 Rally will be held on June 12th - 14th, 2015. It will start and finish near Roseville, CA. Entry is open to everyone with a motorcycle capable of making the trip, a great attitude and interest in taking part of one of motorcycling’s great adventures. New rally riders are welcome, and we go out of our way to make it a fun and enjoyable experience. This year's event will include both a full 24 hour rally, as well as a 12 hour version. They will both start at the same time (Saturday Morning), with the 12 simply ending earlier. The base route for the 24-hr event will be slightly over 1,000 miles. There will be opportunities to add to that mileage with a wide range of bonus opportunities.

The entry fee for a single rider entry in the Cal 24 is $200. Cost for a Couple is $250. (12 hr event is $150 single / $200 couple). Minimum donation for a single is $50 and $100 for a couple. For this, riders get the Rally, a long sleeve riding shirt, a pre-rally BBQ, awards banquet, awards, and door prizes.

Here's a classic photo I took of Tom during Raw Hide in 1997. Shortly after this photo he was hauled off to the hoosegow in Hawthorne.

Although not being a LD rider, after reading many of his posts over the years, I know the world, and especially the LD riding world is a lesser place after his passing.

My condolences to his family and friends.
