This is a repeat of a ride we did two years ago in September. Mcrider007 - Steve, who is a member here and PNWRiders - puts this together each year and it was a great event that we dovetailed with to create the WCRM.5 . So why not again this year?  Headscratch

Baker City is a great destination that offers excellent roads on the way and many riding "loops" nearby. The motel is one of  older variety that you can park your bike in front of your room. It has a pool and the price of the room includes breakfast at their restaurant. The motel is downtown, in the historic district of Baker City within walking distance of everything, including a Yamaha dealer. It is clean, well run and the parking lot is perfect for bench racing and meeting new riders.

They are going to give us last years rate of $37.80 for a single bed and $48.60 for a room with two beds, just call 1-888-523-5882 or 541-523-5844 and tell them you are part of "Steve's Ride".  Hellofa deal if you ask me.   Bigsmile

Damn! I have already prepaid for the Horizons Unlimited Canada West meet that weekend, and figured I should go to one of them, so I can't make it this year. Sniff sniff...

We enjoyed our HU Meeting. Very interesting and a little intimidating!  And at the same time, I think I could do a better presentation than half of the ones we saw  Lol

Probably will be warm but one year we had the warmest July on record followed by the coldest August on record.....anything can happen.

Am in.
August 21, 22, 23.

WCRM is normally a Fri-Sat-Sun combo, so I reserved my Fri and Sat nights at the motel.
So rooms for the nights of 21st and 22nd.
Gotta have time for the nice Saturday loop rides - like the past years.
Come join ...  Ride quality, evening walking distance to everything and minimal cost doesn't get any better, imo!

I know it is July. Contemplating the end of August is depressing for motorcycle riders. Yet, every year I have done so, planning a late August ride, the more I am thankful.

This will be my 6th time at the Oregon Trail and I have never had a concern. The place is clean, as is the linen and I have seen no evidence of bed bugs - and I look for evidence of BB everywhere I stay. Make no mistake, it is a 2 star accommodation, but a clean one.  Thumbsup

And I think motels like this, are perfect for chatting after a ride.

Thanks to Bubba and UHOH for allaying any reservations I may have had as regards the bed bugs. Looking forward to enjoying the charms of the Oregon Trail. There is something about the lower priced, family run motels that is part of a classic road trip.

Is there a Saturday ride up Joseph way...the long way, east of Halfway and winding around N past the W side view of the Canyon?  Forest road 39 and 3920 I think.  It's been awhile and I've always been going the other way.

This may turn out to be a highly attended event Thumbsup....we currently have another 15 riders from PNWRiders.com planning to be at Baker City.

Cool, sounds like it should be a blast.

Forest road 39 ... I think.  It's been awhile and I've always been going the other way.

I asked a friend about #39 this month and he says it hasn't yet been repaved from the past washout, so there are 'many' miles of gravel.
My heavy bike doesn't do gravel without a good cause.

Hmm, I've only ridden a few miles of dirt somewhere in Utah I recall and the Busa did fine.  But 'many' miles?  Too bad.  I remember that road being pretty good!

It'll be August, the motel has a pool, you'll have been riding, so you might want to pack a swim suit.

The motel has an on-site cafe, photo, which is very convenient for b'fast,
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g124/uhoh01/Baker%20City/July152011-DadDaneBrooksMC058.jpg
but I've eaten there so often, that I'd be up to walking
to the nearest other b'fast spot that opens at 8 AM - for a change.

Less than 3 wks at this point.

I am booked on the 21st and 22nd. In fact I am off that week  Bigok Chili Beerchug so not sure where I will ride prior.  Headscratch

Maybe Florence - Eugene - 242 to Sisters, Antelope - Spray - John Day  ...  decisions ... decisions. Oh the pain.  Lol rofl Lmao

Hopefully it cools down some. I have been on some hot rides of late. Last Friday in Omak, Wa it was 108F and not fun and the heat seems to be following me around like a stray dog.

Well, it is starting too cool off somewhat down this way, let's hope it extends to Baker City! This morning it was so cool when I got up I turned on a heater to warm up the boat! I have not done that since early may.

Recall that the re-paving of the motel parking lot must have been done by a Monday work crew,
suggest bringing a side-stand puck (squished aluminum can works) so your stand doesn't poke deep overnight.

Will be there Friday.

Hell's Canyon dam, Sumpter, Lower middle fork road, hwy 244, NF 052, etc.  Lots of great roads west of Baker City heading to Ukiah OR.
Also anything along 395 or US 26 in the John Day area.  Just get out your map and start looking for squiggly lines.

If you don't ride up towards Enterprise were the road is under construction and dirt, where do you ride?

The motel (and many restaurants) will have a small stack of "Motorcycle Rds of E. Oregon" maps - free.
Done by local rider from John Day Oregon; I'll bring mine down on Friday.

Like Greench says: many good routes.

***************
On the Forest Service Rd 39 that you want to ride, I think there's 13 miles of gravel that is being paved now:
"Update July 13, 2015

Officials at the Wallowa Whitman National Forest announced this morning that paving will begin today, July 13, in the construction area on the FS 39 road. Visitors can expect full one hour delays, Monday Friday: 8 am -5 pm, until the paving is finished in late August or early September.

The detour route [all gravel] past Fish Lake is open and an option for most vehicles."

I'm (C14) riding down with 4 others to arrive Friday:
Jim, Steve (VFR1200), Micheal (VFR800), Thad (VStrom1000).

None of these 4 others are in the original post's list of attendies.
So 4 more.

Info on Sport's favorite Forest Service road from a rider friend of mine - as of today...

"I had a buddy ride FS39 last Sunday from Hwy 86 to Joseph and he said the 13 miles from 86
that has been gravel now has brand new pavement.
So its paved all the way through."

EDIT:  Also, Baker City weather forecast for Friday is 19 mph winds from the NNW (no fires there) so
it should blow out the forest fire smoke for visibility improvement just before the wknd.

Good turnout!  Thumbsup Riders from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and Hawaii.......19 bikes total.  A lot of smoke in the sky blocking the sun resulted in mid-60s temperatures, a welcome relief from a very hot summer.

A good WCRM '15.5 - good people, good riding, good conversation, and drinking (mostly) in moderation. Thanks Bubba, and Steve, for setting it up.
We had a group of seven ride to Hell's Canyon. Roads in very to mostly good shape, smokey but with moderate temps. A quick and competant bunch, initially led by UHOH - apologies to the rest, but names have a way of escaping my brain. Very fun roads . The only cop we saw was lurking at one of the very few slow spots on the route - good for us, a loss to the State's coffers.
I rode 395 South from John Day through Canyon City and down the canyon, normally a fun ride - not today. The fire there was devastating , more than three dozen homes destroyed. The constant litany you here from the forestry folks re maintaining defensible space should be heeded. While the houses in areas where the fire crowned were probably goners on matter what they did, those that survived in the areas where the fire stayed close to the ground looked to have removed the fuel around them.

The ride out Hell's Canyon was a hoot. Great bunch of riders, good road, little traffic. and as Rick said just the one tax collector on the route. We had a hoot. I will post the few pics I took later. Though, because of the smoke, many may not look that great.

Thanks to Jim and Steve for organizing everything. Too bad d you could not make it, Jim, it was a hoot.

Excellent - thank you!

It really is amazing how thick the smoke is in some of those pictures. Looks like it was a good time for sure!

Well that's what I get for not paying attention to when the .5 dates are. Missed it.

I guess I'll have to ride over to Barley Brown's all by myself.

Was the Zephyr Cafe open in Downtown Baker City? Excellent breakfast.

Sorry for the delay getting some stuff up here. It has been a weird week.

So, I rolled in to Baker City somewhat early Friday, and spent the afternoon reading, and puttering around. Around 8:30 or so there was a knock on my door, and lo and behold there was Cecil. He, Thad and I then wandered down to the brew pub a short ways away, and shot the breeze, downed a couple of jars, and I ate some lobster mac and cheese.

We had a good time sipping drinks and just aimlessly chatting. It was a very pleasant evening.

Saturday morning rolled around, and we all met up for breakfast in a funky little cafe. There was myself, Steve, Tim, Mike, Cecil, Thad, Rick. Good food, listened to some music spinning on old fashioned 33 1/3 vinyl, and planning the day's grand adventure. We all finally agreed on a rip out to Hell's Canyon Dam and back.

Just before departing, Tim noticed he had pretty much no rubber left on his front tire. The local m/c and power sled shop happened to be open, and the managed to get a new tire on Steve's steed in record time. Around 10 AM we ripped out and headed to Hell's Canyon Dam.

The ride out Route 86 and up the NFS road to the dam was a real fun rollercoster ride. Lots of nixce challenging twisties, some good sweepers, great pavement until we crossed the river at Copperfield and onto the NFS road. There the pavement was kind of rough, but more than made up for in the challenge of the terrain.

All in All a great ride.

Saturday night we a;ll kind of broke up into two groups. I wound up with Steve A, the organizer of Steve's Ride for the PNW Riders crew. He, Rick, myself, and a few others whose names now escape me had Chinese food. Not bad for small town, middle of nowhere Chinese food. There Chicken Kung Pao and Mongolian Beef were actually very good indeed.

Stuffed we all waddled back to the Oregon Trail Motel, and sat adjacent to the pool sipping beers, and swapping stories.

I nust say, it was well worth the trip down and back.

Here is the link to my Google album. Google has made so many changes to the original Picassa web tools that I could not figure out how to share individual photos.

Thanks to the crew from Kennewick for the great riding and the camaraderie. I had a great time.

Cheers,

Kai

The bridge is just off I 84 after Deadman's Pass. It was the "Arch Bridge" Historic Viewpoint.
