Info on Sport's favorite Forest Service road from a rider friend of mine - as of today...

"I had a buddy ride FS39 last Sunday from Hwy 86 to Joseph and he said the 13 miles from 86
that has been gravel now has brand new pavement.
So its paved all the way through."

EDIT:  Also, Baker City weather forecast for Friday is 19 mph winds from the NNW (no fires there) so
it should blow out the forest fire smoke for visibility improvement just before the wknd.

Good turnout!  Thumbsup Riders from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and Hawaii.......19 bikes total.  A lot of smoke in the sky blocking the sun resulted in mid-60s temperatures, a welcome relief from a very hot summer.

A good WCRM '15.5 - good people, good riding, good conversation, and drinking (mostly) in moderation. Thanks Bubba, and Steve, for setting it up.
We had a group of seven ride to Hell's Canyon. Roads in very to mostly good shape, smokey but with moderate temps. A quick and competant bunch, initially led by UHOH - apologies to the rest, but names have a way of escaping my brain. Very fun roads . The only cop we saw was lurking at one of the very few slow spots on the route - good for us, a loss to the State's coffers.
I rode 395 South from John Day through Canyon City and down the canyon, normally a fun ride - not today. The fire there was devastating , more than three dozen homes destroyed. The constant litany you here from the forestry folks re maintaining defensible space should be heeded. While the houses in areas where the fire crowned were probably goners on matter what they did, those that survived in the areas where the fire stayed close to the ground looked to have removed the fuel around them.

The ride out Hell's Canyon was a hoot. Great bunch of riders, good road, little traffic. and as Rick said just the one tax collector on the route. We had a hoot. I will post the few pics I took later. Though, because of the smoke, many may not look that great.

Thanks to Jim and Steve for organizing everything. Too bad d you could not make it, Jim, it was a hoot.

Good to meet Rick and re-meet Kai.

On the way to Baker.  Stiff winds, but it blew the forest fire smoke away.

Well, it suggests that the suspension is defective for sure.

Oh, here's a useful bit of info about not overloading the passenger seat - weight limit 7 lbs.

Also, we rode up Dooley Mtn Rd just 5 days after it was re-opened after the fire roared thru it.

Excellent - thank you!

It really is amazing how thick the smoke is in some of those pictures. Looks like it was a good time for sure!

Well that's what I get for not paying attention to when the .5 dates are. Missed it.

I guess I'll have to ride over to Barley Brown's all by myself.

Was the Zephyr Cafe open in Downtown Baker City? Excellent breakfast.

Sorry for the delay getting some stuff up here. It has been a weird week.

So, I rolled in to Baker City somewhat early Friday, and spent the afternoon reading, and puttering around. Around 8:30 or so there was a knock on my door, and lo and behold there was Cecil. He, Thad and I then wandered down to the brew pub a short ways away, and shot the breeze, downed a couple of jars, and I ate some lobster mac and cheese.

We had a good time sipping drinks and just aimlessly chatting. It was a very pleasant evening.

Saturday morning rolled around, and we all met up for breakfast in a funky little cafe. There was myself, Steve, Tim, Mike, Cecil, Thad, Rick. Good food, listened to some music spinning on old fashioned 33 1/3 vinyl, and planning the day's grand adventure. We all finally agreed on a rip out to Hell's Canyon Dam and back.

Just before departing, Tim noticed he had pretty much no rubber left on his front tire. The local m/c and power sled shop happened to be open, and the managed to get a new tire on Steve's steed in record time. Around 10 AM we ripped out and headed to Hell's Canyon Dam.

The ride out Route 86 and up the NFS road to the dam was a real fun rollercoster ride. Lots of nixce challenging twisties, some good sweepers, great pavement until we crossed the river at Copperfield and onto the NFS road. There the pavement was kind of rough, but more than made up for in the challenge of the terrain.

All in All a great ride.

Saturday night we a;ll kind of broke up into two groups. I wound up with Steve A, the organizer of Steve's Ride for the PNW Riders crew. He, Rick, myself, and a few others whose names now escape me had Chinese food. Not bad for small town, middle of nowhere Chinese food. There Chicken Kung Pao and Mongolian Beef were actually very good indeed.

Stuffed we all waddled back to the Oregon Trail Motel, and sat adjacent to the pool sipping beers, and swapping stories.

I nust say, it was well worth the trip down and back.

Here is the link to my Google album. Google has made so many changes to the original Picassa web tools that I could not figure out how to share individual photos.

Thanks to the crew from Kennewick for the great riding and the camaraderie. I had a great time.

Cheers,

Kai

The bridge is just off I 84 after Deadman's Pass. It was the "Arch Bridge" Historic Viewpoint.
