Alright! As the new guy out here (recently relocated to Eugene, OR from West Virginia) I'm stoked to start ORGANIZIN'!!!  Bigok I miss riding with my STN peeps back east, so looking forward to meeting the west coast crowd.

So let's kick off discussion of WCRM 2016. (Thanks to Bubba Zanetti for prompting me to bug everyone here.) And the inimitable Bubba suggests we have a meet in Sisters, OR. Sisters is a cool place...except it's not gonna meet the STN budget rules—cheapest hotel in town is gonna be $200/night.  Crazy

I'd be happy to step up and help organize a meet in Oregon—but I really don't care where we have it—it's all new to me!  Razz

So far my riding in Oregon has been limited. I've been struck by how few paved roads there are out here compared with West Virginia (which at half the size the Oregon probably has twice the miles of paved roads)...on the other hand there's some pretty awesome scenery out here.

And since last year's meet was in Eastern Oregon, I can understand why folks might want to go elsewhere.

So let's start kicking ideas around! (I know nothing of the history of WCRM either—so feel free to enlighten me.)

Off topic a bit, but where in Eugene do you live?  My folks live southwest of town off of Lorane Highway (a good local ride, BTW).  I went to school at the U of O, and did a lot of riding in the area.  I'd be happy to suggest some good roads.

Back on topic, throwing it open to suggestions has been proven to be a bad idea.  Us here in Region 1 are worse than a gaggle of cats as far as willfulness and contrary behavior is concerned, and herding us is a Herculean task.

My best advice is pick a time and place and announce it.  Some kibitzing will happen from folks who have no real intention of making it to the meet anyway, and when the dust settles we'll have a consensus of a sort.

Withstupid

Plan it, announce it, do it.

My MO (for day rides, at least) was to plan what I wanted to do, told others about it and then went ahead and did it. If other people showed up: cool. If not: I had a great time anyway  Bigsmile

Oh, and while this is Sport-touring, we've also had some great non-paved rides as well:

I understand perfectly miles—it's actually no different in the east.  Wink

And great pics Colleen—I've already noticed the zillions of miles of unpaved dirt/gravel logging and forest roads in Oregon—definitely a lifetime's worth. Seriously makes me want to put a bashguard and TKC-80's on the Wee-Strom and start riding them!  Thumbsup

Oregon has more Forest Service Roads than any other state- half again as much as California, #2 on the list.

Most of them are gravel logging roads, and perfectly passable with street tires on your V Strom.

Gold Beach is a nice place but I'm not sure of many east/west roads.  South into CA and then 199 back into OR is a nice ride though.  Crater Lake area is great and the surrounding area has great roads to ride.  Jus sayin...

I was hoping Mr SW WOULD choose a location, what with being newly left coasted and all.

I think Quincy CA would make a great locale but, I am easy.

Personally, I'd keep it small and cheap at some place like Prineville. Not a lot of choices, but they do have a nice Mexican restaurant and an Econolodge with free Wi-fi and breakfast  Bigok

And you're close to John Day Fossil Beds, Rt 27 south to Prineville Reservoir, the roads near Spray and Fossil....  I'm tempted to come back for it myself

That kitchen looks suspiciously Canadian.  If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say somewhere in southern BC, closer to Alberta than to the Pacific...

Forgot to answer your Q earlier—I actually live a couple blocks from Lorane Highway (but in town)—and yes! There's great riding right outside of Eugene to the south and west out that way. I work at U of O.  Smile

Prineville's a good suggestion—definitely cheaper than Sisters!  Thumbsup

I also like the Gold Beach idea. Or even better, Brookings—which could be a great spot to rope in NoCal as well as the most spectacular part of the Oregon Coast (from Brookings to Gold Beach—that's hands-down the best scenery-wise). While 101 can be slow and torturous at times, I've ridden some great roads in and around the Coast Range.

Hmm...I'm feeling a fit of MAP GEEKING coming on. :-) Plus some exploratory runs in the coming weeks.

Oh and I got rid of the KLR a few years Colleen—and regret it! It was modded up and armored beautifully...and I told myself (at the time) that it was dumb to have two 650's in the garage.   Sold it for $3500 to a guy who then rode it 65,000 miles around North America!  Lol I definitely see another one in my future...

My vote would be for the coast, but as you pointed out a whole lot of Oregon's 101 really sucks.

On my way back from Crater Lake NP a few weeks back I took the road less travelled, SE out of Klamath Falls thru Tule Lake into CA. and into Lassen NP from the north.  Great riding area!

Yes, just don't rape anyone and you should be fine.  Razz

Location could also dictate date, as one may not want to meet in eastern Oregon in the heat of summer, nor meet on the coast in the cold damp of early summer.

Fortuna, Weaverville, Chester, Ashland, The Dalles, John Day/Baker City, Quincy have been WCRM or /2 destinations or were scheduled but didn't happen ( I've probably forgotten a few). All had good roads nearby and decent places to stay, sleep , drink, eat. Some were surprises - I had never heard about Ashland as a destination, but with a local leading we had fantastic riding, on the other hand some of the very highly rated roads N. of The Dalles had deteriorated to the point that they were pretty but dangerous.
The Den Mother mentions some places I have been through/near but know nothing about. I would love to go somewhere I've never been but would be happy to return to any of the above.

I think this will be the 15th WCRM, we should return to Fortuna as a tribute.

Maybe with this drought thing in Cali, we can leave our rainsuits at home.

Part of what we want is to make the ride reasonably accessible for those coming south to north and north to south. The Redding "area" - out to and including Arctuna - is relatively equidistant from Seattle to San Diego. Though a big haul for some Canadians. For me it is 800 miles or so and some deadly boring roads 395 to 97 down to Klamath - which I have taken to calling the "sign of the devil ride" because it is soul sucking boring and precisely 666 miles from my house.  Lol But NorCal roads make up for that in a big way.

Yes. You need to branch out. We've  gone down the road.... many times.  Bigsmile

Half the fun is getting to Fortuna in one day from San Diego. I can't but there are certain souls I would not bet against.

For my first WCRM ten years ago I left my house in San Diego at 4:20 in the morning. I thought that was an appropriate time to leave for a visit to Humboldt County.

At noon I crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, and at six I pulled into the brewery parking lot in Fortuna.

A good day on the bike.  Inlove

I can relate to that scenario Miles, especially given your route.

It is about gathering. Then perhaps riding together. Then, and most importantly, meeting, sharing and bonding because ... because ... this is what we do.

Every one of my best friends ... ride a motorcycle.

I can understand SoCal throwing out central CA. as a suggestion, let's not forget Yosemite NP.  That's pretty central and has just one of the routes over the Sierras, hiway 120, which is right next to 108 and 4 and 89 and 88.  All of which have beautiful mountain passes above 8 and 9,000'.  There's also Calaveras Big Trees SP on hiway 4 and places to stay in several historic little towns.  I'm not advocating it, I can be at Yosemite by lunch, I'm just sayin, not all the great roads in CA are north of SF.

The basic problem with anything south of the Bay Area is location, and not lack of good roads. Hell, if it were only about good roads, an amazing WCRM could be held here in San Diego County.

No, the reason there have never been any meets in Central or Southern California is that very few of us travel from down here- the greater number of attendees come from somewhere north of California (some, like Bubba Z, from Canada) and for them a meet south of the Bay Area would necessarily involve far, far too much freeway travel to get here.

We met in Arnold, just up the road from Yosemite, a couple years ago.  It was a good location, but it's 850 miles from Seattle by the most boring and direct route and more than a 1000 mi from Castlegar.

So it's longer than that and a two day trip each way if you want to hit any interesting roads.

For those of us EAST of the Rockies,  date is much more of an issue.
No fun getting snowed in.

I'll just be watching the carnage on this thread until some things get firmed up.

For me,  just getting to Bubba's is 10 hrs,  so any place past Oregon is a 3 day ride anyways.

SoCal, as enticing as it may seem, is a long way. Heck, the recently mentioned Arnold is 1588 km from Richmond, BC (suburb of Vancouver).  That translates to just over 986 miles. So, unless you want to arrive in Arnold barely capable of walking it is a 2 day ride. Not that I would mind it, but going any further south starts to eat up time in a big way.

I am back Bigok

OK So where and when

I am near SF Bay so anywhere within 1k works for me (it's only one day ride) Better be cheap just no bugs please

The later in the year the closer to the ocean I want to be, unless it turns out to be a Death Valley Camping trip in August (better bring the cactus buttons then)

For those who may not know, Fortuna is less than 80 miles from Leggett even with a cruise thru the Giants down the Avenue and once at the 101/1 turnoff at the northern edge of Leggett it's only 20 miles or so to the Pacific...via the west coast Dragon if you will. Inlove  Those riding from the south will likely take 1 to 101 anyway but I'm sure they would be only too happy to ride that section from the coast to 101 again.

I have managed to ride Leggett to Ft. Bragg 4 times in the last three years and always love it. I love the temperature and climate transition from Garberville to the coast.
Looks like I will make it 5 in 4 years.

Also want to ride that goat path FRO Mad River to 299 that Viffer and Brane were telling me about.

Two people agree, that's what we call a supermajority in region 1.   Bigsmile

So Friday May 20 - Sun May 22.  Someone should call the Eel River Brewery and see if they are busy.

Get a hotel at the Riverwalk. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g32404-Fortuna_Humboldt_County_California-Hotels.html

Plenty of choices for all budgets and some within crawling distance from the Eel River Brewhouse.

There's also an rv park with camping and primitive cabins.   http://riverwalkrvpark.com/

I have heard back from Super 8. They still have 19 rooms left as of this writing. they have offered a rate of 99.00 per night, discounted from the standard rate of 119.00. he has also offered a discount at the nearby Comfort Inn of 125 single king and $135 two queen. This represents a discount from $139/$159.

That said, I booked my room at Super 8 via trip advisor, and the price was 89.00 a night.

Not too many other hotels listed in Fortuna. one thing I found was the almost universal hatred reserved for the Travel Lodge on all the aggregators sites's comments sections.

I have written their sales director back to enquire about if we need a promo code. I was also wondering if we should barter given the discount you can get through sites like Expedia or Trip Advisor.

The AAA rate is $103.49 for one queen room, so yes I would like a promo code for the $99 rate. I'm using the hotel's web site.

They may have a separate agreement with TripAdvisor. I see the $89 ($81 US) is no longer available - can others confirm? What they are now showing on TripAdvisor is... $103/night.

We may have to go with the $99 rate.

Lucky me.  $84.99 for a non cancellable room @ Super 8 for a King bed!  That rate may have been low due to early booking.

Last night the AARP rate for a single queen was $74.99, tonight the AARP rate is no longer available although it is still available for earlier dates.  It appears that once they book a certain number of rooms all the discounts are unavailable for the remaining rooms.

I have set up room blocking for 19 rooms at the Super 8.

Details:

tel: 707-725-2888
Promocode: Sport Touring West Coast Regional Meet
Rate: 99.99/night

If you have problems, email me at v.oxblood@gmail.com, as I have Google enabled on my phone and I will be able to get to sorting out any issues upon receipt of email indicating a problem.

We have 2 nights blocked May 20 and May 21, a mix of smoking and non-smoking rooms.

First come, first served.

If they book out all rooms before you get to making a reservation, David Enoch at Comfort Inn has also quoted a discounted rate at Comfort Inn, starting at $125 single king and $135 two queen. Let me know if you call too late too book at Super 8 so that I can confirm the deal still stands at Comfort Inn. I have not, as yet asked them to block any rooms at Comfort Inn.

Both hotels are on the Riverwalk, and stumbling distance from the aforementioned Eel River Brew Pub.

Cheers,

Kai

If you're riding the Oregon coast its about 165 miles to Astoria and then another 135 or so to Newport, a nice place to spend the night if you're taking two days to get to Fortuna and then from Newport to Fortuna it's just 335 miles or so, almost all with coastal views.  Before crossing the old bridge at Gold Beach take a ride out onto the jetty where the Rogue River empties into the Pacific.  Take a right just before the bridge and head due west.

I've found that Florence makes a pretty good mid point stop.  Lots of reasonable hotel choices within a couple blocks of the downtown area. Plus the  ride from Waldport to Florence is arguably the best part of the Oregon coast.  Or Bend if I decide to ride the east side.

I guess I need to try Fortuna again. I've been a few times and each time it rains like a sumbitch. I do like that brewery though.  Beerchug

Today, the forecast for the 21st is 64 and SUNNY!  Of course that can change but I'll keep my fingers crossed. Smile

I may be able to make dinner Friday.  Possibly in the cage, as the bike is almost back together.

Brewery?  What time?

Thanks!  I'll try to make it.

They tend to overforecast rain here.  There may be showers, but it's not likely to exceed a few hundredths of an inch.  Shady places (and we have a lot of them) will remain moist, though.
