Info on 2016 FJR1300 released
«

Cycle World has an article on the new FJR. Cobalt blue, six speed, same motor, changed dash lay out and minor cosmetic changes.
They raised the gear ratios of 1st and 2nd gear and lowered the 4th and 5th gear ratios. So, 1st through 5th will be spaced very close and then 6th will be higher than the current 5th gear of the 2006 to 2015 FJR.
Supposed to be released in February 2016. I'd like to know the MSRP?

Interesting. I liked my Gen 2 quite a bit. This new gen looks very appealling. Time to jump back to an FJR?

So I just rode from Chicago to Florida a couple of weeks ago on a FJR I recently purchased. Thought I'd miss the 6th gear since I have two other bikes that had. Wasn't the case. There's enough power everywhere so no problem. Also cruises at a pretty relax pace if you keep it at real world speeds. That said, should start seeing even better deals on used FJR's since the old ones "only" have a 5 gears.

I'm with you. I wished my 2005 had a higher top gear to drop the RPMs. The second generation fixed that. The 2012 that I have is great and I see no advantage to having a higher gear ratio for top gear. I think Yamaha had to do it to the 2016 to keep up with "the next door neighbors". The roll on in top gear will be slower and when you have wifey and gear loaded up I see down shifting on the radar screen when in the Colorado mountains.
There are still new 2012s, 2013s and 2014s out there so there will be great bargains coming!

Well as a longtime gen 2 FJR owner, I have never been in a situation where I needed a 6th gear. The engine has a tall and flat torque curve that makes extra gears in the mid ranges unnecessary in my opinion.
According to the info on the new transmission 1st and 2nd gears are taller. Don't really understand the advantage of that.
Only advantage new 6 speed gearbox may have is better gas mileage when crossing big flat states at high rates of speed.

I didn't see a compelling need for six gears in my Gen II and still don't with the Gen III. Both bikes had no problem with acceleration and power delivery.
I'll swear that "blue" looks different from my '06 which I thought was an absolutely beautiful shade of blue.

I don't see the need for a six gear either. My gen II is fine at highway speeds. I often start in second gear as I find first to be too low. The engine has enough torque down low to have a taller first IMO. I will wait until I can do a test ride.
The big plus for me is that it's not black. I have one and don't want another.

I don't know what I was thinking about the other day but left my neighborhood stop sign in 2nd gear!
I'm with you on black. I have never owned anything that was black. Best color in the world for about twenty seconds.

The 6th gear won't change the riding experience much, but the new slipper clutch most probably will. Once I started riding slipper clutch equipped bikes, downshifting without it on older bikes without it just seem rather clunky. Granted you'll have to ride spiritedly to notice the difference, but isn't that the whole reason for buying a supersport touring bike?
Gen3's Cruise Control and now Gen4's slipper clutch pretty much bring the FJR on par with other large STs.
Now if they would just get rid of the dual mufflers. That is so 90's.

The new gearbox has helical cut gears so I guess the gear whine will be gone also.
The new clutch is supposed to require less effort also.
If I was in the market for a new long distance bike I'd probably have to give it a hard look.
I can't help but wonder how much life is left in the 15 year old power plant though, given ever tightening pollution requirements around the world.

I never missed the 6th gear on my '06, but adding a 6th and slipper clutch will have an impact on the riding experience. Quicker acceleration in 1st and 2nd can't hurt. When ya get use to the easier down shifts with the slipper clutch you won't want to do without. Now if Yamaha could bring the weight down near 600lbs ............

I wonder how well this piece of technology will work:
Quote
All-New Lean Angle-Sensitive LED Lighting System
The FJR ES utilizes Yamaha’s all-new LED lean-angle sensitive lighting system that allows riders to see through the corners for incredible illumination and improved low-light vision. The 2016 FJR1300ES is the first Yamaha motorcycle to feature this technology.

I'm interested. What I'd like as an improvement to my Gen 1 would be cruise, a more adjustable rear shock and a diet. I sat on a '15 at Indy, it was nice.

That trunk is kinda chunky monkey looking - BUT it appears Yamaha now provides it's own bracket similar to the Givi one - maybe it'll actually support more than 5lbs and not bust up the sub-frame!

What's wrong with that top box?! Looks like it'll hold more than the 2 lozenges combined. Yeah, sure hope Yami beefed up the subframe.
