For those interested in a day long dual sport ride, here's the indicative dual sport route:

https://goo.gl/maps/DY7gKtndYQC2

The ride includes the following stand-out locations:

•         Middle Mountain Road w/ stop at Laurel Fork Campground (made famous by ADV Rider)
•         Spruce Knob overlook (highest point in WV)
•         Dolly Sods Wilderness Area
•         Douglas Road (FR 18) – double track
•         Canaan Loop Road (two river crossings) – double  track and includes hero section

For those interested, I have a 200 mile dual-sport loop to the north (up to Morgantown / Cheat River) that is best done on a thumper (KLR, DR, etc), but most could be done on a big adventure bike with TKC80s and some skills. I rode that loop twice last year starting from Coopers Rock State Forest. It's a good time you bet.

A little early for me to make a total commitment, but I've always had a great time riding out of the Canann Valley Resort.  By the way, what is DUAL SPORT? lol  If at all possible I'm going to be there.

Sure, but I not sure if my crystal ball or the tea leaves are more reliable Headscratch   Sure hoping for more sun and less rain this summer.  Need to do some serious riding.

My tax refund isn't big enough to do my original vacation plan, so I'll have to settle on weekend jaunts.  Sad

True, but this meet won't include any dual sport. The "dirty" part is just a mix of paved and unpaved public roads. No (true) off-road.

A mix of on-road and off-road riding.

Doug, Doug, Doug,   Dintcha know I was attempting to make a yoke!   Lol  I do know what it is, but my idea of going off-road isn't a good thing.  It usually means flashing lights, fire trucks and stretchers.  Even when I had a GS I think the closest thing I did to dual-sporting was going up a friend's gravel driveway.

I think you'd really dig it.  The roads are narrow and windey, it rains a lot, and it got the greatest pub scene.

I'm not sure that my multistrada is dual enough for this sport.  The rider (me) has plenty of experience off road, just not so sure about the duc.

I hope that won't keep you from making the trip. I'll be there on a Honda Shadow (or maybe a KZ1100) - plenty of excellent on-road riding in the area. Smile

That's my issue.  There's a trip I want to do in June, but it's not set in stone.  To do it, I have to forgo other trips before it.  If it do a prior trip, I definitely can't afford the June trip.

I hate it when people can't make commitments until the last minute.

I'm in.  It cost me $10 more a night than the reserved rate but my reservation is confirmed.  There are more rooms.  So now I'll put together my route back and forth and the day in between.  Looking forward to the ride.  I'm looking at some nice sweepers with some twisties mixed in, ahhh!  Any prize for the one coming the farthest away?

32 south, 33 east into VA, 42 south, 250 west, 28 north, Jordan Run Rd, 42 north, 93 east back to Davis. Great loop (~250 miles). Easily extended if desired as there are great roads in every direction...

EDIT #1: 309 miles if you skip 93 and continue north 50, then 50 west to 72 south into Parsons, then 219 north to Thomas and 32 south back to Canaan.

EDIT #2: And you can super-size EDIT #1 to 381 miles by taking 678 (cool country road) south off 250 in McDowell down to 39, then 39 west (twisties!), then 600 (cool country road) and 84 north to jct 250 in Monterey. Continue west on 250 (twisties!).

Personally, if I was doing a street loop, EDIT #2 would be a very serious contender for my Saturday.

Thanks Garry.  I put together a nice asphalt route based on your directions and some deviations.  Looking forward to riding it.  Anyone want to join in let me know.

Getting excited and close to final plans folks.  I've got a pavement route in the GPS if anyone is interested on having a copy for Saturday. I't is  based on Garry's suggestions for the area with my adjustments.

The site won't let me upload the route.  The GPX file is just a bit to large and the site doesn't accept GDB files.  PM or email me if you want a copy of Saturday's route.

If anyone would like a GPX file of the fire-road route, IM me your email address and I'll send it your way.

My plan in leading this ride is to have a quick pre-ride meeting basically saying, "I'll  be riding at a pace which is needed in order to get the in the miles planned.  If you feel uncomfortable with the pace on gravel, there will be plenty of bail out points.  We're saving the two more technical sections (bash plates HIGHLY recommended) for the end.  That way, if you're comfortable with the dirt road sections but don't want to take on deep ruts, holes, big rocks, and few moderate water crossings, you can bail out before these last two sections."

Feels like a Friday!  Banana Chili Banana
I’m off tomorrow and the next day and am looking forward to getting gone. I’m meeting Slides in Ellicottville, NY at noon.
Looking at the forecast maps: weather is better east tomorrow and west on Friday.
Trick is to find the perfect spot where the system rolls through overnight.

My plan is to have a late start on Friday morning (perhaps as late as noon) and ride down behind the rain. Friday afternoon looks to be dry if you're coming from the north or west. Saturday looks to be a crap shoot on dodging thunderstorms.

58 from Damascus to Volney is awesome. 16 over the mountain to Tazewell is an adventure.

Wait till you hit southeast Ohio with it's blind, rollercoaster curves.

We came. We rode. Much fun was had despite some typical psychotic spring weather. Chris and I managed to have a great sunny ride down on Friday, an awesome sunny Saturday morning followed by a damp (wet roads, not raining) afternoon. Sunday morning was quite brisk with snow/ice on the bikes and temps in the mid/upper 30s. We hit some rain on WV20, but it was mostly just a weird mix of wet roads and some drizzle with periods of sun, a squall of ice pellets, and gusty winds much of the day.

Rode lots of great roads. Had fun hanging with everyone at the (nicely upgraded/remodeled) resort. Got to meet Orson. Finished the weekend with about 920 miles on the clock. Looking for to doing again in September in Hancock.
