We were initially heading north to Ft Bragg and Fortuna this weekend but with the predicted rain, we decided to change and had south to Monterey. Terribly windy on the way down but nice and dry. Tomorrow we will hit Big Sur and head home to Alameda. Hopefully for all of us, the wind will calm for a safe ride home on Sunday.

I have lots of pictures just not of the Friday night meet. Maybe that's a good thing for some!

Got home about dinner time last night. It was really great to put a face to a forum name in meeting you all. My friend and I had a nice time. Saturday rain goofed up our plans on riding. We hung out at the Eel River Brewing Co for lunch and to stay dry. Rain let up at about 3:00p so we escaped to go South away from the wet. It was right at 2,000 miles for the trip the way we went by the time I got home.

 * The Canadians were very nice, wasn't sure what to expect. Heck, they all spoke English and I heard only one "eh". Still on the fence about Bubba, though.  Bigsmile

 * I paid off my debt to Viffergryl of one cold drink. She ordered her favorite drink served in a punch bowl with corresponding up charge!

 * I got to see a whale at a viewing spot. Never seen a whale in the wild before.

 * A thank you to Sport for meeting us and guiding us through the SF area and on up.

 * A special thanks to Bergmen for meeting us on Hwy 1 and chatting for a bit.

Got to ride the Avenue of the Giants and visited the Drive-Thru tree. We tent camped again outside of Ft Bragg due to a dirt bike gathering of some sort.  No rooms to be had but the ones for over $100. Bikes everywhere and on the street. Must have made a deal with the local Sheriff. Camped outside Yosemite and then went through to 395 and home.

Well, I am home but unfortunately I only have 3 more pics.  Headscratch

It was wet, cold too. On the way down I did very nasty winds. Saturday in Fortuna was a write off with often heavy rain.

Mine and Dr Zorkos bike in ever increasing puddles

36 never disappoints me.  From there we skirted the wet, and higher elevation snow, by heading to Alturas. We were warned of snow that night but only saw hail. Cold start to the morning but we rode showers through Burns
and then through the chilly and lonely 395 to John Day ( where some high speed shenanigans may have taken place EEK!) Chilly riding for me. But a great group of riders, beautiful roads and vistas  more than made up for the weather.

Met some cool ST.n folks. Always fun putting names to monikers !  Had some good conversations, got to see Viffergirl's awesome Duc !  Finally figured out C.H.U.M.P. Car racing thanks mbrains willingness to answer my questions. I am on my IPad which is about to shut down. More later.

Made it home safe.

5300km,  no tickets.  not a lot of photos because I don't have a waterproof camera.

We decided to see the Oregon Coast.   From Astoria to Newport we saw the worst of it.  Cold, windy and buckets of rain.   Bikecurious' gear wasn't up to snuff and we had to call it after 1/2 day due to unstoppable shivers.
Newport to Crescent City was the best of Oregon.  Sunny and pleasant,  only started to rain once we got to Fortuna.
Our return was via the Redwood Forest to Grant's Pass, then Medford to Crater Lake and up 97 to Canada.

Mountain boy Bikecurious actually LIKED 97 around Bend Crazy  Said it had something to do with the "big sky"    I tell ya,  there's no accounting for some people's kids.

Well well well.... who would have thought it would rain so MUCH during a WCRM??  Embarassment

Thanks for the photos that were posted. It sounds like it was a generally good time, despite the dampness.

Arrived home yesterday afternoon thinking I was early, but forgot the switch from Pacific to Mountain times. Rolled in at 5pm from Coeur D'Alene.

Total distance was @4400km (that's @2750 smørtønde for our American friends). Considering how much of that was on corners marked 15 to 30 , it was an amazing and successful trip.

Too bad about the weather, but it was great meeting folks and getting some fun conversation on Saturday.

High points of the riding:
- Everything within a half-day of John Day, OR is amazing. The road from Pilot Rock --> Heppner --> Condon is incredibly fun and challenging
- Forests in the Crater Lake area
- Middle Waitsburg Road, from Waitsburg WA to Walla Walla WA
- However we got from Grants Pass, OR to Willow Creek via Cave Junction --> Happy Camp
- CA36 !!!
- OR3/WA129 from Enterprise OR to Lewiston ID starts off a bit dull but turns into fast sweepers and ends up in a dizzying canyon ride that seems to go on forever. Highly recommended. That route finishes off with a twisty drop into Asotin, WA that's the twin of the famous Old Spiral Highway up the road in Lewiston, ID

**Lesson learned: always fill up when you have a chance. That "town" on a map might not be an actual town. Looking at you, Ukiah OR...

Viffergyrl and M.Brane got home last night after a leisurely ride back down to SoCal. Still have to sort through the photos. Great to hang with the Canadians (bubba zanetti, birdrunner, bikecurious, Dr Zorko, YCDZZR, and especially Oxblood). Great to see knobnose again. Nice to meet Blue is Best and Sport. Learned that Blue has a tendency to exaggerate.  Bigsmile

Back home yesterday afternoon after a smooth ride. Managed to get most of Hwy 2 all to myself heading towards Everett. Very nice! I didn't mind the rain so much this trip as it keep the bugs off my face shield. A fair trade off I'd say!

It was great seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new (to me) folks. I enjoyed riding with you all and look forward to more of that again in the future.

Cheers all!

Well, am I ever late catching up. Just got home this afternoon.

What to say about the the weather that has not been said? Not much. I think everyone has got that covered already.

The Friday boozer at ERB was fun indeed. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. It was great putting faces to names and shooting the breeze with everyone.

Viffergyrl, it was a hoot chatting with you and M.Brane. You guys is alright.

What a hoot riding out 36. Talk about a roller coaster. I do NOT need to go to any amusement park to get that kind of thrill.

Had a good ride from there with Bubba, Dr. Zorko and YYCZED. Finally split from Bubba and Dr. Zorko Monday afternoon in Umatilla. They went to Motel 6, I went to the Umatilla Marina and RV Park to camp out. Nice relaxing evening reading and drinking beer beside the Columbia.

All said, despite the lousy weather it was a great trip, and well worth the time. Got to see some familiar faces, and meet some new peeps as well. Great time.

I'm glad everyone had a good and safe trip in spite of the weather.  I had attended 8 of the last 9 WCRMs but skipped 2011 in Fortuna after getting caught in a snow storm in 2010 on 36  trying to get to Fortuna and decided then that would be my last Fortuna adventure unless the WCRM was held AFTER Memorial Day.  So now I am 8 out of the last 10, maybe I can make it 9 out of 11 next year, but not Fortuna before Memorial Day.

My riding buddy is still visiting and I had a couple of relatives drop by so I am behind in reading/posting. But I had to clarify a terrible, scurrilous statement made by a female rider here.

I have a dry sense of humor that does not always translate well in written form. I was joking about the Canadians and I liked Bubba. I DID see a whale in the wild. And I really thank Sport and Bergmen. So, where was the "exaggeration"?

Oh, and how come my pictures are not visible?

Scott and I are in Truckee tonight, almost back to Alameda after working our way South in the Sierra foothills, trying to stay below the cold, rain, thunderstorms and occasional snow, then up the Owens Valley, Monitor and Luther Passes to Tahoe. There are some wonderful roads in the SW Sierra from Sequoia/ Kings Canyon to the area near Lake Isabella - well worth a WCRM or .5 in the future.
Sorry we missed the crew on the ride East on 36. I guess we were just a bit behind as we saw Vyffergyrl and M.Brane leaving the parking lot of a burrito place in Red Bluff just as we were entering.
Continue to take care all.
