Hi All:

A guy down the street has parked a 1997 BMW R1100RT-D on the street with a FOR SALE sign on it: $3,650 or best offer:
• 87K miles
• formerly a police bike (but has no obvious police markings)
• new brakes, supposedly in good condition all-around (his sign didn't go into much detail)
• body is a bit scraped/scuffed-up, but looks cosmetic only

I know zilch about BMW's...but have been keeping a low-key eye out for a bigger bike than my Wee-Strom for riding with the wife. Could this be it? Assuming the bike is in good shape, is this a good deal? Any critical issues with this one to look out for?

Thanks!
Scott

I've got a '96 civilian RT with 30k on it I've been thinking about parting with (in Seattle). I'd let it go for that if you're interested.

Police bikes get all kinda abuse. Drops, riding the clutch, idling. I would only buy one if it was never in service or a lease turned back in after a year or two.  Also, having owned both R1100 & R1150 I'd go with an 1150 everyday.
