I’ll write a separate post about my shopping process soon, and of course one about the new bike.  But for now, looking back on 10 years and 47,000 miles of essentially trouble-free riding with Ducati’s baby Multistrada.

Purchased from Martin Motorsports, back when they were at their old location farther south on 100

My first ever STN group ride in the winter of 2006.  There were to be many more led by Doc over the next few years.

Doc rides

January ride led by the late AirborneXX

The first of many visits to First Sunday in Ephrata

My first STN event, the Burger Run in 2007

Burger Run 2009

Burger Run 2010, where I led a big group ride to Kinzua Bridge

2013 STN Spring Meet

First trip to Americade in 2007, where I got to park the bike next to The Comet wooden roller coaster (after riding it through the amusement park, which was terrific)

Back at Americade in 2012, again parking inside The Great Escape

Hit 10,000 miles on Skyline Drive at sunset.

Hit 30,000 on the road down from Hyner View

The first of many fantastic trips to West Virginia

WV 2009

First trip to the Snake, which I “found” completey by accident

http://www.kendenton.org/ducati/2008-01-04%20WV%20Winter/DSC_1868.JPG

The first STN Winter Meet, 2008

Parking on the track at the first Indianapolis MotoGP

First time on Smoke Hole Road

The first group ride I put together

The first “Ride to the Rides” in 2010

Down to the Dragon in 2010

First STN Camping Trip, 2010

At the 2011 Camping Trip R Doug even convinced me to join the off-road ride

Before it relocates to a corner in the garage I took it out to West Virginia for a nice farewell trip

Very nice write up. Curious as to why you got the new bike bug?

I think after 10 years it's just time to try something new.  I'm still keeping the Multi (for now) because it's just too great to part with  Smile

So expensive/hungry maintenance-wise it was? Did you do valve adjustments yourself? How often?

That's the way to go. To many times I sold an old fav m/c (or handgun) to try something new. I shoulda kept the old one. At least for a while.

In the beginning when I was riding 10k miles/year and taking it to the dealer the service costs were pretty heinous.  6,000 miles minor service, ~$500, every 12,000 major belts/valves and that right around ~$1,000.  The last few years I've been riding it a lot less so that helped, and I had a friend who's also a mechanic do the last belts and valves service.  The maintenance isn't the driving force behind the change.

That's the plan.  It was really a struggle to come to the decision to get a new bike as I really do love my little tractor.  Keeping it gives me the safety net in case it turns out I've made a huge mistake (Arrested Development nod).  If it turns out it gets left in the garage for every trip then in time maybe I'll sell it.

What are you getting? Staying with Italians, going German or back to basics: UJM?

There's a guy at work who parks his strada next to my glee.. I admit it is a pretty bike.. but then I look at bottom line, parts, service etc no questions wee all the way. I need bike which will take me to Alaska and back without worrying too much.

Though I admit oncoming KTM 690 and 800 Adventure look tempting.

Wouldn't a legit adventure version of a Guzzi V7 II be the end all?  Real long travel off road suspension and some ammo can panniers.
