One of my treats to myself is to ride the North Cascades highway in Spring. This year the projected opening is May 29th Memorial Day in da USA.  EEK!  The second latest opening since 1974. https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/passes/northcascades/

That is late. This winter without end it is unsurprising.  ❄️!
Perhaps a loop out ia Merritt to Bellingham and east via 20  Headscratch  hmmm
But my calendar is looking good.

Thanks for the heads-up.  I haven't made plans for the weekend, but I may head that way as well.

I usually leave fairly early to avoid the traffic.  I went once, turning around a little past where your picture is, and all I saw coming from the west was bumper to bumper traffic.  I had a wide open ride both way.

Let me know if you're interested in riding together.

There's also a landslide closure on 20 between Okanogan and Winthrop.  Big detour required if you're coming from the north.

Pulled these off the WA DOT Twitter account which is the best source for updates.

Yes, and I think SR20 was a great road for it.  It's a scenic route with some interesting corners, but hardly a twisty fest.

I do love hat road. Alas, it is going to be open late this year.I will likely get on it when I head back from Weaverville. And maybe again on the way out to Castlegar in July, or the way back.

Either turn around at Winthrop with a stop there for lunch and gas, or continue down Hwy 153 at Twisp and head south on Hwy 97 to Wenatchee, then back over on US2.

This was Mt. Baker a couple weeks ago.  Lots of sand for the last few miles, with 50-75 foot long patches of snow to ride through...none of it level either.   EEK!

But at least there was a road to follow...

Thanks for asking.  It's a 2014 F800GT.  The cases are SW-Motech Trax 37 liter cases.  I love the cases.  You can stuff them...and stuff them...and not worry about breaking anything.  I kiddingly say to others that I could stand in them and they'd still hold up.  Bigsmile

Here's a couple other pictures that show what they are like better.

I can't take credit for the cases.  The previous owner was a retired cardiologist.  He did all the research and bought only the best accessories he could find to outfit the bike for touring.  It helps that he was an inch shorter than I am, so what he did ergonomically fits me perfectly.  It's a relaxed ride that I've done 10-12 hour trips on and didn't feel tired at the end of the day.

And every time I have to move it in the garage, or in a parking lot, I love the low weight of the bike.  Wink

I got this in my email today...  11am on Tuesday, May 16th is the planned opening.  Thursday or Friday look good.  There's a special weather statement saying that the snow level is dropping to 3500 feet for the next couple days.  It might delay the opening.

SR 20/North Cascades Highway reopening planned for May 16 Warmer weather helped crews speed up the initial June estimate

DIABLO – It seemed like the winter weather might never end after record rain and snow pounded the state and delayed the reopening of State Route 20/North Cascades Highway. Finally, warmer temperatures, warm rain and sun arrived and should allow crews to reopen the road well ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

With a lot of long days, and help from the weather, Washington State Department of Transportation crews turned eight weeks of work into 5-1/2. Crews are finishing final repairs and are planning to open the highway for the summer at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 16.

“Not being able to start clearing until April 10 meant we couldn’t be open for the beginning of fishing season or Winthrop’s ‘49er Days Festival which we never like to happen,” said Don Becker, WSDOT’s maintenance supervisor in Twisp. “Crews always had a Memorial Day weekend opening as a goal, despite the estimates that told us June. Luckily, in the end, the weather was finally on our side.”

The warm weather helped melt some of the snow, but those conditions also increased the avalanche risk. Safety is WSDOT’s top priority and crews used spotters and safety ditches in the snow to keep themselves protected during clearing. Some chutes still have snow, but rain over the next few days is expected to cause them to slide and get cleaned up before the highway opens.

The clearing process

WSDOT crews started clearing back on Monday, April 10. Working from both sides, crews not only clear snow, they also repair pavement, signs and guardrails plus clear culverts and ditches of debris to ensure the highway is safe before it reopens

This year’s reopening is the third latest. You have to go back to June 14, 1974 to find the only time crews weren’t able to get this stretch open before the end of May.

Open for driving and recreation

Once the SR 20/North Cascade Highway gates open at milepost 134 and 171, the highway will remain open through the summer and into fall. Crews will close it when conditions in avalanche chutes become unsafe, usually a week or so before or after Thanksgiving.

When the highway is closed; skiers, backpackers, snowmobilers and other adventurers are welcome to use the closed stretch at their own risk. When crews are working on clearing, the area is closed Monday through Thursday.

Ive seen them on the F800GS but never on a GT!  Those are the mounts that come off with a few turns, too?

Yes they are...unless you have locks installed.  The previous owner thought of everything, including how easy it would be to simply unlock the locked cases from the bike and walk away with it all.

I have never received as many compliments on any bike as this one.  I was at Total Wine today spending money to save money  Headscratch when an "old" (probably my age) couple walked up and complimented me profusely on the bike.

I looked at a R1200RS yesterday and one of the things I liked about my GT over the RS was the bags.  I'm not sure they'd look right on the RS, but they fit well on the GT.  I believe the RS BMW bags hold about 55 liters between them.  These hold 37 liters each.  And they are much more suitable for tying something down on top of them.
