That place sounds real nice. The only "hook" in the bait may be the Southern location. I'll go with the crowd's decision though.

Might be an interesting place. Kind of pricey except for the “Boom Town” Cabin’s. Restaurant doesn’t mention beer or fried food but there’s the Coloma Club not too far down the road. The passes are reasonably close.
It’s a bit early to decide on a central Sierra location - March and early April sometimes bring lots of snow which would delay pass opening - snowing like hell at the moment. There are some great roads in the foothills but I’m only familiar with a few - need some local knowledge.

There are some great roads in the foothills, but if the passes are closed there goes the major draw for the area.

Hmmmm.... M.Brane's offspring graduates on Thursday, May 31, but it's in Visalia and Auburn/Placerville would be within striking distance. Three Rivers has motels as does Visalia. We often stay at the Comfort Inn and Suites downtown which is within walking distance to many bars and restaurants. There's covered parking but no pool or anything like that.

I'll be out in New Mexico third week of May, and am considering continuing west to Sacto to visit rellies and friends if I can swing it $-wise. That would at least put me in the right place at the right time, so I'll watch this space.  Cool

I would love to come to the WCRM this year, but I am still having flashbacks to 2010 when I froze my ass off in the rain. Hell, there was even light snow on the way there.

I know the timing is because of the potential National, the BBBBQ and whatever else. But it still annoys me that I have to worry about rain when riding in “sunny” California.

Is everyone still happy with May/early June?

Well, as luck would have it, my issue that would have required me to attend a trial June 4 has been settled, so it looks like I ought to be free for this shindig.

Please excuse me for seeming ignorant, but are the dates still set for May 31 to June 3? Has a locale been specified?

If we go with the Auburn/Placerville suggestion, then we will likely get some good riding in.

I checked the snowpack levels yesterday, and they are currently at or under 50% of historic norms. While there was snow in March, it was no where near what they were hoping for. Web cams on CalTrans are showing a distinct lack of snow, and the highway closures map shows most roads are open. There is potential for some nice loop rides.

So, the question is, are peeps gonna attend? And do we stay in Auburn or Placerville? More hotel options in Auburn.

If we are thinking of riding the passes, a bit further south might be better. We were in Arnold in 2012 and it was quite nice. Food, lodging and it’s on hwy 4 (Ebbetts Pass).

The Calaveras Big Trees SP is just east of Arnold and their north grove is well worth the walk.  The local news tonight said the Tioga pass thru YNP will open tomorrow the 27th of April!  Highways 108 & 4 can’t be far behind.  88 has always been open and there’s very little snow on the summits anyway.  89 over Monitor pass should open as well connecting 4 and 395.

I just checked Arnold out on Expedia. Ouch! Hotels there are pricey! Unless someone knows of a cheap hotel there.

Placerville, Auburn and Rancho Cordova all look to have reasonably proced hotels and motels? Preferences?

Do we even have a head count?

Will the dates be May 31 to June 3 as suggested by some?

Well Placerville is kinda close to Grass Valley (sort of in the country) but Auburn and especially Rancho Cordova are in highly populated areas (Sacramento area).  Is that the kind of area where everyone wants to meet?  BTW, I spoke with park management today at YNP and despite what the local news said about opening highway 120, the park said they can’t say exactly when the Tioga pass will open even though there is no snow on the road.  Glacier point road was opened and is now closed again for example.  The other popular Sierra passes over 108, 4 and 89 are still closed even though they too do not have any snow on the road.  The roads north of Grass Valley and up thru the Quincy area should all be clear except for 89 thru Lassen NP which usually stays closed until June sometime.
