May be moving from fj-09 back to ninja 650
«

In the past I've ridden big bore cruisers, then shifted to sport touring types (Honda ts1300, BMW K1200gt.) cause I thought bigger is better, but and taught me to be a better rider. In 07, I downsized to a new Ninja 650R. Loved riding this bike, and still do. In 2017 I got a good deal on a new FJ-09 and I've forgot why I downsized for, cause I wanted just a slight bit more performance. Recently I find myself riding the ninja 650 much more, and find it way more fun and practical for mostly backroad riding and cornering, and not as much on fast moving highways, but everywhere else a blast to ride. The FJ-09 is a very smooth, fast comfortable ride, but the gearing tends me to push me too fast, or mostly revving in lower gears. I find the FJ slightly too upright compared to a sport ride positioning and handling I'm used to. Because of my height @5'9'', bike feels tall and heavy esp. when filled w/ 5 gallons of gas and I tend to lose footing a lot. I feel the Ninja is more forgiving, and have a great feeling of running thru the gears, and in more control and ease.
Please reply if you've considered to downsize for similar reasons,
Thank you, HR...

I'd like to help support you but can't. I'm 5' 8" and 160-165 lbs and haven't had a street bike less than 1000 CCs since 1976. The lightest bike I've had since that time was probably 500 lbs. Weight just doesn't bother me.

I had several liter bikes..Concours, ZRX, VFR, FZ1, etc and then picked up an FZ6. I’ve put 60K plus on the FZ6 over the years and really thought it was the bike that fit me the best of any bike I ever had. But then I ran across a can’t turn down deal on a Ninja 650 with only 2900 miles on it. I’ve put almost 10K on it this year, and the FZ6 has gotten less than 1000 miles on it in the last year. I absolutely love the bike, the engine, and the light weight. I don’t really miss the extra power of the bigger bikes and like the “character” of the parallel twin 650 much more than the inline 4 engine most of the others had.

I'm 5'-9" and ride an FJ-09. My wife has a 650 Ninja. When I ride her Nina, my legs feel completely cramped up. I love the upright, open ergos of the FJ. So I guess I'm the opposite of you.

The weight may bother you if the weight was distributed higher up, and esp. if you don't have good footing.

Jay, the MX racer in ya would like to ergos on the FJ. Just like a big dirt bike, tall, wide bars and feet right under you.

You sound so similar to my wife and I. I'm also 5'9". Since I've been riding the FJ, my wife has been riding my older 07 Ninja 650. The problem I see w/ the FJ for shorter riders is it's weight is slightly more on top, and the seat, esp. near the tank not being narrow enough to drop my legs straight down and keep a good footing. I've come apon a few situations where I've come very close to dropping the FJ cause of uneven or loose grading below, esp when trying to move bike when sitting on it, but not with the Ninja. It could be me getting used to a taller bike, and not being able to flatfooting it, but I need to control the bike, and it not control me. it just takes the fun out of riding, and makes it more like work, and more for a taller rider. That's just me. HR.

I feel like I'm seeing this trend of riders finding out there's more to riding than a spec sheet, and figuring out how much power they're actually making use of, or really need.
I'm very happy with the performance of my VFR800. I think it's somewhere around 110 peak HP, but I've hardly ever pushed it that hard, and the torque comes in where I need it. I've ridden faster bikes, but I've never found myself thinking that the VFR wasn't fast enough... I think having some overhead in terms of passing power and performance is a safety feature in itself, but I don't I see myself moving up to a Hayubusa/ZX14 or the like. Even a lot of the 1200 sport-tourers just seem too chunky for my liking. The 700-900 range seems to walk the edge pretty well between being light enough to get out of their own way in the twisties, but still powerful enough to cruise on the highway comfortably, at least for me. When (or if) it comes time to replace the VFR, I don't think I'd down-size, but I don't think I'm going to take a significant upgrade either.

I know one example does not a trend make, but my experience over several bikes has been just the opposite. Not downing the Kawi brand, but just sayin'.

I agree. Kawasaki ownership has made me the great mechanic I am today.

I'm much more a Kawie fan than a Yamaha fan but we have both those bikes in the garage right now and the Kawie is not even in the same league. That being said, the Ninja is a fine machine.

At our monthly riding group dinner tonite, the ZX14 rider said 2020 will be the last year for it.

Sad
I guess there isn’t a true market now a days for that type of Motorcycle

As a “tweener” there was never a large enough market to justify
the exorbitant expense of compliance testing for emissions
certification.
I suspect the Hayabusa will follow suit.
Unfortunately, we’ll probably see a lot more of the same
for most one-off engine designs. Expect to see similar engine
designs across several models in the future.

Having purchased a KLX 250 earlier this year, I find myself jumping on it more frequently than the Bandit 1250. The Bandit is a greyt bike, but I just find the KLX more convenient for running around and doing errands or shorter joy rides.

I probably ride my 450L six-seven times more often than my FJ-09. The FJ is almost reduced to commuting duty now. The 450L is that much fun.
