2004 FJR ....thinking of buying
«

I have the opportunity to buy a one owner 2004 FJR with 20,000 miles on it. Owner claims it was meticulously maintained and so far the photos seem to confirm how well it was taken care of. Is there anything I should be concerned with or problems with that particular model year?

The Tick, also throttle position sensor recall.
Other than that, this era of FJR is pretty solid.

A small percentage of 2004-2005 had bad valve guides that would lead to premature wear resulting in loud ticking sound and need for valve guide replacement.

I put 70,000 hard miles on my 2005 FJR and never had the tick.
The only thing I worry about on older bikes is the rubber parts and so forth getting hard and not sealing well anymore. Otherwise, go for it.

My 2005 got the tick at 11,700. I had it fixed under warranty and no problems since, now at about 48K

There was a lot of talk about it at the time. Most was for the small % of owners who had it, to document it for Yamaha. Once that was done, Yamaha made changes and even the rare ticker ended. I still have my PdP 2003 (SN...795) and it's never ticked.

There was lots of talk on the FJR1300 forums about how hot the Gen I (03 - 05) ran. All sorts of solutions were tried and tested by users to reduce the problem.
And not all riders were bothered by the heat.
The heat issue was fixed with the Gen II '06 update.
