Very hard to say exactly what should be happening right now. Coronavirus is killing people no doubt about it. It is real but not as deadly as it is being portrayed. My opinion only. Years from now we will look back and know exactly what should have been done. Now? Not so much.

Sure, limit where spectators can stand; easy.
But what about getting TO the event?
And where people stay and eat DURING the event?
And the teams that support the racers?
No, it is best not to push it, not this year.

The numbers say the only country that has nailed this covid thing so far is Australia.

Several practical reasons contributed to Australia’s success, experts say. The country chose to quickly and tightly seal its borders, a step some others, notably in Europe, did not take. Health officials rapidly built up the manpower to track down and isolate outbreaks. And unlike the U.S. approach, every one of Australia’s states either shut their domestic borders or severely limited movement for interstate, and in some cases intrastate, travellers.
Perhaps most importantly, though, leaders from across the ideological spectrum convinced Australians to take the pandemic seriously early on and prepared them to give up civil liberties they had never lost before, even during two world wars. “We told the public: ‘This is serious; we want your cooperation,’ ” said Marylouise McLaws, a Sydney-based epidemiologist at the University of New South Wales and World Health Organization adviser.
A lack of partisan rancour
increased the effectiveness of the message, McLaws said in an interview.

But it’s perfectly ok to jam 160 people arm to arm tight on an airline flight ? And we are not hearing about mass deaths from that?

I was thinking the same way as Mrs DD was. It's the other situations that would cause the damage should they proceed with the race.

While the course is many miles long, there are certain spots where fans do congregate shoulder to shoulder and several people deep. Many of the houses, etc. that are used for lodging are packing people into small areas. The teams are packed closely together in a limited amount of space. The restaurants, pubs, etc. are packed almost the whole time. AND 99% of the spectators are coming from elsewhere! From all over the world!
My guess would be that the IOM government, under pressure from the local residents, has made this decision because of fear what the outsiders would bring to their island.
