Do you have a hero? What does it take to be a fan of someone? What attributes gains your respect?
Personally, I only have a couple people who I would consider a hero. I'm sure there's plenty out there who are worthy, but with the media calling everybody a hero, I'm a bit more picky.
I think knowing who a person idolizes tell you much about that person.

You have some real good points.
A hero to me is one who does well in what they have decided to pursue. They don't grab the microphone and try to tell the world how things should be done, etc. They are real sportsmen and are a good example to try and emulate. Both for adults and kids.

My answer timed out, but it is,
I'll start with the ever most original answer: My Father is my hero.
Here's why:
He was born in the 20's in Holland. and was a pre-teen during the depression he sold potatoes door to door to help the family. The Nazis occupied his country from the time he was 15 to 19. He lived under a brutal regime. His big brother got sent to a camp for helping the resistance (survived ... barely) His brother in law was executed the day the Germans pulled out. he survived random checks and press gangs looking for workers. A year later, he got drafted and sent to Indonesia to fight against the communists for the Queen and big money for 3 years, nearly dying of disease while there.
None of this is particularly unusual. What gets me is that he bore no hate to these people, NONE, Nada, In Canada he became close friends with many German immigrants.
When he got here, rather than go to the ESL program, he had my mom write a note for him in English saying he was looking for work. Mom thought he was crazy, but he came home with a note saying they had work with a German crew, and that my mom was to show up tomorrow with the details. Dad learnt English from a German /Canadian work crew. (lets just say it was "colorful" LOL.) BTW, landing my Mom as his his wife was was batting WAY OUTTA HIS LEAGUE. How he ever convinced a privileged merchant's daughter to leave it all behind and move to Canada is beyond me.
Within 10 years he started his own contracting business with a partner. By the late 70's his company had 110 employees and was worth millions. Anybody knows this takes time from family, but when he did make time for us, we were all his. He NEVER cancelled a family vacation, always making them about us.
The biggest thing that impressed me was that when Mom was sick, diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he showed me what true love was. He became a super-husband. It took years for my siblings and I to find out how much work Mom was. When he finally relented and she was in specialized care, he visited every day, and took her on as many day trips as he could. Feeding, washing, changing diapers, you name it. I can't imagine. The staff there loved him.
Through everything he kept his joy in life. In the army, he managed to scam his way into being the dispatch rider for the battalion, having a personal motorcycle. He learned to down hill ski when he was in his fifties. He could bullshit his way out of any speeding ticket. Bought trail bikes for the kids, and then proceeded to ride EVERYWHERE with his teen aged sons. He snowbirded in Mexico, even though he spoke zero Spanish, driving his motorhome all the way from Canada. He liked experiencing a different culture.
Even with Mom sick, he managed to find a light side. One Christmas, after Mom exclaimed she loved everything he'd bought, and "How did you manage to get the size right", he confessed to taking Mom with him a couple weeks earlier to pick it out herself.
He could forgive the hugest wrongs. When a close friend/ original employee was caught embezzling a huge amount, rather than put the guy in jail, he had the man sign over his cabin to him rather than let the man's wife find out what he did. A week later, when the wife ripped into him for firing his loyal friend, he just sat there and took it. Never telling her the truth. I don't know what he did with that cabin, but it was with that family till the man died.
When an employee was despondent over cancelling a family vacation because their car had died, he gave him keys to his own car, and was THRILLED in 2 weeks to hear they'd had a great time.
He taught me to waterski, sail, snow ski, ride motorcycles drink good whiskey, and to find the good in almost all situations.
His last motorcycle ride was when he was 83. He asked to borrow my big dual sport ... how could I say No? He needed a step to get on it, but away he went. I got a call later saying he'd crashed it, but that he was OK. He'd panicked when his toe missed the rear brake, grabbed too much front, and tucked it under. After the bike got to the shop for repairs, I asked him how'd it go? With a smile, "AWESOME".
He loved to party, work hard play hard was his moto. Never cheap out, if something was worth doing, it was worth doing "RIGHT". et Staff Christmas parties were huge, and 100% free.
Being the oldest survivor of a hear valve transplant in Alberta history only slowed him down a little. He passed away at 91, (seems like just yesterday) living life to the fullest. Terrorizing the staff with his electric scooter, flirting with the waitresses, at a beach resort in Mexico. (His "considerably" younger girlfriend at his side). I figure he set that bar pretty high too. LOL
Damn I miss him.
So for those life lessons, he's my personal hero.

A non-personal here for me would be Terry Fox. Basically a Canadian idol
He showed what determination could accomplish. google him it's worth it.

Bird, a very nice story about your Dad. Hero was a title I didn't even think of related to my dad. My dad was was probably exactly opposite of yours. He left us when I was in high school.

I'm sorry to hear that. That's a totally alien concept to me. I'm sure it sucked. Although I'll confess, Dad wasn't perfect, but I don't agree with the current media philosophy that our heroes have to be.

I'm not a fan-boy of anyone in the typical sense. I don't care if someone is famous. I think the adoration of the masses over Hilton, Kardasian et al is a plague on society. I had a "big deal" country music "star" try to bitch me out about me taking his parking spot, my response, "Suck It".
That said, there are a few people I am a fan of.
Wayne Gretsky ... He played in my town during the "Glory Years" and you NEVER heard a bad thing about him. To have people tell you your the greatest from the time you're a kid for 20 years, and not have it affect you speaks volumes about character.
Garth Brooks, not a huge music fan, but I watched a documentary on him and was impressed. He walked away from it all to focus on family. He didn't treat his kids as princesses. He made them build a freeking BRIDGE on the farm one summer. And he gave back to his fans and community. When he was in town here a couple winters, he donated time to Habitat for Humanity.
Jay Leno: Everything I've heard about him tells me he's still just a regular guy.
Ryan Reynold: Hey, as a Canadian, I'm gonna hope he keeps up is work with charities, and love for his home country.
I'm sure there's a few others, but for me to be a fan involves someone overcoming circumstances (good or bad) and still retaining a real sense of worth and humility.

I vote no on Garth Brooks based on personal experience.
I was working for a civil engineering firm which was contracted by a rural water district to do their engineering. The water plant was on one side of the river, which split the district. The portion of the district on the plant side had water storage tanks, the portion on the far side had the water pumped to them. Brooks' property was on the far side. They had problems with the pumps failing and people being left without water service. Brooks' property was well elevated from the portions along the river, thus being ideal for a gravity storage facility. I was sent to negotiate a location. We needed about one acre. I never got to talk to Brooks himself but met with his on-site land manager/attorney. I told him of the situation, explained that the tank would be a ground-storage type (the short, wide kind that are not highly visible, not the tall, can-be-seen for miles standpipe type.) He said, "So it would be good for the community?" I replied, "Yes." He said that he thought Garth would have no problem with it but he was out of town and would talk to him when he got back. A couple weeks later, I went for a follow up visit. His exact words were, "Garth said no. He said he is not in the business of giving away land." I was disappointed and even a bit shocked. We ended up having to use a less suitable site further away that required the standpipe-type storage tank.

A real Hero is someone who went beyond the simple call of duty or "doing their job" even when it means they sacrifice something (time, money, sweat-equity, etc.).
Being in combat, with an enlistment contract and combat pay, isn't being a Hero; it's doing the job you signed up for. Saving your squad in the face of almost certain death IS being a Hero.
OTOH, I agree with Brooks. Few are creating "new land" so giving it away is unwise. But if the city didn't offer to compensate him, then there's part of the problem. Charity shouldn't be expected and especially NOT when the place asking is also taxing me. Brooks is from my home state (and my cousin's hometown) and I wouldn't go out of my way for him for much of anything. Just another Okie with some big breaks. Not that there's anything wrong with that and being polite to people on the street is the polite thing to do. Hero? Nope.

Some sort of laws did not allow for financial compensation because the water district is a not-for-profit or non-profit entity-or something to that affect. It is not part of the government so is not doing any taxing.
In my twenty-two years working there, he was the only one who ever refused.

Rich people don't get that way by using THEIR assets. It's a concept that many don't seem to get. Most will be "penny pinchers" in ways that might surprise some folk.

Elon Musk. I wouldn't say hero, but I do appreciate how he sees things differently from established norms and goes about his business with passion.

Warren Buffet
Used his smarts to invest in companies that actually built wealth, making himself hugely wealthy, and then is proceeding to give most of it back to the people he built it with.
He's borderline hero material in my opinion.

There's a lot more people I'm fans of than there are heroes in my opinion.
eg, I'm a fan of Jay Leno. Would even pay to have lunch with him. I think it's be awesome.
