My internal clock has been conditioned to get up by 5:00 am for so long, it might take a long time to do a reset. Woke up this morning at 4:45 and couldn't go back to sleep.

That happens to me often. At least twice a week, sometimes 3 or 4 times. My alarm is set for 5:01.

B and BS, it's not the old days anymore. There are very few companies that do not look at employees as more than numbers to get their goals accomplished. Too bad. Anyway, you will get used to it and your lifestyle will adjust.

Retirement is what you make of it. I know people that sleep late and lounge around all day. Those are the types that will have health problems. Then there are those of us that look/find things to do. Who has a problem with getting up early? Why? I'm typing this at 5:00a my time. I feel great. three or four days a week I take a "power" nap in the afternoon. If I am busy I don't. Life is great!!

Naval Ravikant said to be really free is when you can go to bed and get up only when you want to.

My internal clock has been conditioned to get up by 5:00 am for so long, it might take a long time to do a reset. Woke up this morning at 4:45 and couldn't go back to sleep.

Doesn't work. Trust Me{tm}

You go to bed at the wrong time and end up awake at 3am without any chance of falling asleep. (I've been up for an hour and a half already).

I get that. Woke up this morning thinking two things...

One is "I'm free to do what I want!", other is "what the hell have I just done?".    Smile  and   EEK!

How about these?

Look around the house, are there projects that you've been putting off/ignoring? How about the garage? Improvements or projects there that you've been putting off? Take a look at the yard. Again, things that need attention? Since we don't go somewhere every day, Monday-Friday which occupies about fifty hours per week, there is a good portion of that time we can allocate to the improvement of our living situation and help us to burn calories.

Old friends/family you've lost contact with?

I'll get off my soapbox now.                                           Bigok

If I ever get there, there won't be anything bittersweet or surreal about it. I'll be singing and dancing for joy.

Enjoy your time, no matter what you do with it.

Sometimes I feel "guilty" if I don't make the best use of my time (weekends, holidays, etc), but then I stop and think: "this is MY time - how I use it is only up to me"  So - enjoy YOUR time!  Bigok

I plan to take your advice.   Thumbsup

Kind of funny because in past years I would always know how many days off I had before having to return to work (End of year shutdown usually gave 10 to 12 days, this year 11) and focus on the countdown. I would try to get as much "fun stuff" done as I could. I caught myself doing the countdown thinking yesterday.

Excellent advice.  Do NOTHING long enough and you'll choose to do something to not be bored. In either case... choice.
