Two Sundays ago I was getting in bed about 10:00p and whammo. Pressure like a balloon was in my belly and an intense pain that is hard to describe because it is specific to the passing of a stone. Unless you have had that happen then to know the pain is a stretch to imagine.

So after thinking about what I ate for the day(nothing unusual), drinking a bunch of water, trying Pepto Bimal(sp?), etc, by 3:00a I decide it is not food related but a physical issue. So I go to the ER about two miles away and after blood draw and questions by the doctor he says a gall stone has passed and is lodged at the opening of the pancreas. We have to wait for the stone to pass or some incredible procedure to go through the throat, stomach, intestine and right turn at the binary duct to the stone is in order.      EEK!          They put me on Morphine(a first for me) and it took the edge off but not all of the pain. A couple of hours later Bingo!! I feel better!! Doctor says the stone has passed and they have a surgery time of noon for me.

When visited by the surgeon and nurse anesthesiologist to explain things I tell them I have been hacked on before and have done just fine and the knockout stuff works great on me without complications. They are happy but I stop them from leaving and ask that when I wake up that I am 6'2", 190 lbs with long blonde hair and after they quit laughing the doctor says there is only so much science can do.      Crazy

Now ten days later I feel 100% again. But I know that I have to go slow because of the inside healing that has to take place.

I had the procedure done a few years back.  I was passing stones for a few months, in the middle of the night I would have the hellasious pain you described and I was able to walk it off.  I would go for a stroll in the middle of the night and after a mile or so the pain would just go away.  The internist I was seeing at the time was doing tests on my heart.  Said the sack around my heart was infected.  He prescribed a ton of anti-biotics.  No change.  After a 4th of July party the pain came back in the early hours of the morning.  I toted myself off to the ER and the host of the party was on duty as the ER Doc.  He took one look at me and said you have gall stones.  After checking, it was confirmed.  Around 7:00 they did the laparoscopy surgery and I went home in the early evening.  This was on Thursday evening when I went home.  The next Saturday I was at scout camp with 18 little monsters.  It was a good thing I had 2 of my boys there to carry my stuff.   rofl

In the last year and 1/4 I have had three "episodes" of the intense pain but they only lasted 10-15 minutes. I now know they were stones passing. I'm just glad the gall bladder is finally gone. They say it will effect what I eat. I'm not happy about that. I eat everything and the greasier/spicier the better. No more.     Sad

Thanks for the "wishing well".

I love Mexican food. It has never bothered me. They say no more. The function of the gall bladder is to release bile into the intestine to counter act oily/greasy foods to help with digestion and do something to the spicy stuff. Supposedly if I continue to eat as I have in the past I will not be a happy camper.

Glad you're OK --  FWIW -- you spew much less bile than most others -- so you should be OK without a gall bladder...   Smile  Just go easy on the Mexican -- not so much because of the chillies but the cheese...

No, no, I need the gall bladder for it to spew bile.     Bigsmile      Ironic that you mention cheese. I am a women's cooking delight. I will eat everything and there is nothing that I refuse. EXCEPT cheese!! When I was about four I began throwing up on the stuff. Can't stand it. Smelling it makes me wretch. You know, cheese is rotten milk. There has to be a reason mice and catfish like it.

I was told the same by my doc.  The only thing that I shouldn't eat anymore is green peppers, like bell peppers or chili relinos.  If I eat them, which I like, you will not want to be near me.  Lots of methane gas around.  He also said that I would have a change in my daily restroom breaks.  No change.

Sounds like you are doing well. I haven't had any bad experiences but I haven't pushed the envelope with Mexican food yet. I think I will wait until I am completely healed up and then slowly push things a bit!!

As I've reached old age, bell peppers often bother me. It's a shame because fajitas is one of my favorite meals.  Sad

The good thing is that jalapenos still don't cause me any problems.  Thumbsup

All or just some?  Green bell peppers are a common offender.  Try Yellow or Red ones.

Ah -- never asked my friend -- maybe she doesn't even know...  She just swore off bell peppers BUT still eats hot peppers.

I've had pork, fried chicken, pastrami and oily type dressings. No problemo. Today I am reaching for the test limit. I just finished pork chorizo, onions, potatoes and guacamole. No spicy stuff yet. We will see what happens later due to chorizo.
