Here are some pictures from a trip to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan last month. I'm too lazy to copy/paste the ride report, it's all on my blog though (see links below) Bigsmile

If you have a dual-sport bike and you want to ride some amazing roads and see some amazing scenery in the Midwest, the UP is the place to go. At times it reminded me a bit of Colorado, Alaska and Idaho Thumbsup

Day 1: Round and round we go, where this road ends, nobody knows

The tiles says it all  Rolleyes for our first day we ended up getting lost - a lot Lol but we got to ride a lot of good roads and learned some good lessons like #1 always bring food with you when you are riding in the middle of no where and #2 don't trust the GPS Lol

Day 2: Riding Henry Ford's old road

Today's destination was 510, which used to be called M-35 back in the 1920’s, it was a road that Henry Ford started to build, which was going to cross the Huron Mountains, but the road was never finished.

Today County Road 510 starts near the Marquette-Negaunee area, the first 5 miles are paved, the next 19 miles are a well-maintained gravel road. On today’s maps 510 turns northeasterly toward Big Bay and old M-35 route continues for 3 or 4 more miles as a lower-quality road called "Blind 35. We were planning on riding to the end.

Day 3: Exploring Copper Harbor on 4 wheels

We got rained out on day 3 and ended up driving out to Copper Harbor.

Day 4: The Huron Mountains

The Huron Mountains are located mostly in Marquette and Baraga Counties, overlooking Lake Superior. Their highest peak is Mount Arvon outside of L’Anse, which is 1,979 feet above sea level and is the highest point in the state of Michigan. The mountains are the remnants of much higher peaks, which have gone through successive periods of uplift and erosion.

Today, we were going to ride Triple A, Ford, Northwestern and Erick Roads, a route that utilizes the constructed portions of the proposed M-35 route which was supposed to continue over the Huron Mountains and connect up to the road on the other side that we rode two days ago, which is now county road 510.

Excellent Vivid.  Great pictures!

I'm looking forward to showing your ride report to my wife.  I'm hoping it will expedite her "need" for an XT - she keeps mentioning some nonsense about only buying one bike a year... next year maybe... blah blah blah... followed by other rational thoughts that are lost on me.  I guess it's good one of us is grounded.

Thanks for the report.   Thumbsup Thumbsup

Wow, I honestly never knew the Upper Midwest had that kind of beauty.  Thanks for the pics.   Thumbsup

I find myself drawn more and more to dirt roads these days for just the reasons you've shown.
