Please Settle an Argument

My 16 year old son listens to anything, which is great, and he tends to have to have pretty good (ie same as me) taste.

He has slipped up a couple of times-he can't stand the Velvet Underground, for instance. and he is now trying to convince me that Judas Priest are very good, influential, etc, etc. I've pointed out to him that, so far as I can tell, the only contribution that they ever made was to bring the S&M look to metal and that they are much later than the early, much more influential, British heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, etc. But he won't have it.

Kindly settle this once and for all.

Glenn Tipton and KK Downing are truly underrated guitarists.  Very Precise, even live.  I'm a Maiden fan so a lot of Judas Priest is lost on me.

While I don't consider them HUGELY influential, I think they bridged a gap in music and did end up as role models for later bands. Their songs tended to have a simple message, one that I did NOT interpret to say "go kill yourself". Not sure how to vote, so I'll have to go with the apples option.

Judas Priest had some good hits in the 80s, but they're not as good as apples.

Judas Priest is mentioned often in the same breath with Iron Maiden as one of the bands that was a major part of the British Heavy Metal movement of the early 80s. They had completely changed their sound and look after years of playing weird sounding rock music. They were a very influential Heavy Metal group.

I do like Judas Priest, my favorite full CD is Painkiller vs individual songs (You've Got Another Thing Coming which is excellent). When I think of Metal, they're one of a few bands I think of so yea, I'd consider them pretty influential. I'm not a fan of Velvet Underground though.

I liked Maiden and Priest, but I usually dubbed 3 or four songs (at the most) from each casette since most were forgettable.

Iron Maiden was here last night! I missed out since I was installing baseboard and window trim.

I forgot to add that Turbo Lover was the descent into oblivion for me. Poor disc and should not be allowed even at picnics. I think they were trying to copy Winger or Def Leppard by this time and could not pull it off.
