Your riding pace

The riding alone versus in groups thread got me wondering how fast you guys really ride. Discounting gas/food stops, traffic problems, delays, etc. When you're out there on the highway or in the twisties, what is generally your pace?

 On most of the roads I ride it's 10-20 over if you want to keep up with the normal flow of traffic.

 It all depends on the road/traffic conditions though.

but i must admit, when it gets twisty, or flat open and deserted, i have no qualms visiting "please impound my bike" speeds.

Hard to vote on this one because I rarely twist it hard on the highway (except for a ride on Larry's bike), and my pace varies a lot.

In the twisties there are times I'm out for a scenery ride, and I'll barely break the limit. Other times I could be accused of the death wish pace.

However, I rarely go stupid fast on straights because that's when you end up in jail.

Can you add "all of the above" to the poll? I'd vote for that one...

WHen I'm out and about in the local mountains of San Diego County my speeds are typically somewhat elevated.  I chose the option above 20-30, but "death wish" isn't really an accurate description...

Death wish isn't really accurate either. I never feel out of control (except when I am trying to keep up with either Steve or Miles... )

Most of the time I'm at the speed limit to 10 over for the straight parts... a bit quicker for the corners.

Up to 20 over on my commute which is where I do most of my riding. If I'm out in the twisties for fun it depends on road condition, traffic and how well I know the road but I can easily creep in to the Speed Limit +30 (or more) range.

I do not hammer it on the highway. It's too easy to draw the wrong kind of attention and going that fast in a straight line isn't all that much fun.

Assuming we're talking actual speed, not indicated, I'm a 10-20 over rider. Lots of it depends on which state I'm in. In PA, many country roads have 45 MPH speed limits that would be 55 in WV or OH. So in PA I'll be a lot closer to 20-25 over and more like 10-15 over in WV or OH.

I'm a 5-10 over rider on major highways and near civilization though. No desire to get a ticket, especially on a crappy road.

I try to keep it 10-over or less near towns, but I'm often in the 20-30 range on backroads or even highways.  Rule of thumb is to keep it under double the posted limit if I'm 'giving it the berries'.

Most speed limits were designed for 1950's cars with 1950's suspensions and tires as safe speeds even in the rain.  Unless the housing density requires caution for pedestrians, the posted speeds are utterly irrelevant for safety purposes.

They persist because they are such an effective mechanism for tax collection. With the state budget deficits, expect speed enforcement to become more draconian.

Here in RI, the legislature just enacted a red-light camera law specifically as a revenue plan and included projected collections in the state budget.

I'll do the speed limit in town, but normal traffic flow is 5-15 over everywhere else, and I've been known to open it up to get from A-B on the (empty) slab so I can get to more interesting roads.  Normal sporting pace is 15-25 over.

When you're out there on the highway or in the twisties, what is generally your pace?

When on the straight roads where it is easier to get busted by radar, I'm keeping it less than 10 over, typically. In the mountains twisties, though, I'm looking at 20-30 mph over......with short bursts on occasion of 100+ over depending on where we are, weather, roads, etc....Since the bulk of my riding is in the mountains, I voted 20-30 over.

I usually like to keep the speed limit within sight most of the time.  It keeps the insurance rates low on the fleet.  I figure that the longer you are above the limit, the higher probability of getting tagged.
I may choose to ignore that on the desolate or twisty sections if the conditions are right.    I also consider the speed limit to be somewhat optional when passing as I feel it's safer to get the heck out of the other lane sooner rather than later.

I voted 10-20 over but that doesn't include the slab.  When I live in PA the only place you'll ever see a cop is on the interstate, so maybe 5-10 over max.

Once off the interstate I like a pace where I never have to touch my brakes

I keep it under 20 over most of the time. I also try and look slow. By that I mean smooth, relaxed and not all fidgitty and tense. Body language of riders says a lot.
