Helmet Laws - What's your take?

I always wear my helmet, but I don't think I should be forced to.  I do think that people that wear helmets should get an insurance break or discount of some sort.  This would encourage people to wear them (aside from the fact that it'll help save your melon).

That's be cool, but from an insurance standpoint, there'd be no way to confirm that you actually do wear your helmet. On the other hand, I suppose its along the lines of "is your bike garaged?" I answered yes even though half the nights its outside under cover.

BUT

If a helmet prevents an injury it effects more then their person and family.  If my co-worker crashes and can't work for a few weeks, months or years my workload increases.

Some places its law to have it on the bike, you dont have to actually wear it. Thats the same as a life jacket under the seat in the boat... doesnt do you much good when you are at the bottom of the lake...

Or if you happened to not be wearing a helmet in a crash you wouldn't be covered.  I like the idea, but I admit I have ridden (although rarely) without a helmet. It's only for a few miles, occasionally.. but you know how that goes

I think that the 'state' is trying to protect those that are too stupid to know any better. Just like seat belt laws.
It's funny... I find this topic likely out of place on this forum, as I think the overwhelming membership, who are 'sport tourers' are pretty intelligent, by and large, and would choose to ride smart. I would think that the topic would be much more controversial, say, on a Harley forum, where the average I.Q. is by definition, w-a-a-a-a-y lower. This last statement, by definition, must be true, as what semi-intelligent person would choose to ride a bike that a) doesn't go

I would prefer my insurance company required its insured riders wear them.  If not, no coverage for injuries.

Let try to keep the government regulation at a minimum please.

Only the lack of demand for their product.  If they have unreasonable conditions then demand for their product will go down.  I doubt I would continue to purchase bike insurance if the insurance company wouldn't cover bike riding.

It is not an uncommon practice for an insurance company to decline insure based on statistical data.  My RZ350 was on a restricted list immediately below the Yamaha VMax.  I went elsewhere rather than find another bike.

Other conditions are restricted from coverage such as racing, and in some cases, rally activity.

The problem is, insurance is mandatory in so many different ways.  When people/companies are required by law to have/provide insurance, it totally skews the market.  This leads to the situation of today, where many insurance companies are nothing but money-grubbing crooks.
