Hey Guys,

Remember those 60 - 65 deg days we had right before Thanksgiving? Well, I took the whole week off and the kids were in school and the wife was still working and I guess we all know where this is going...

I took Mon and teus and decided to go see this volcano in New Mexico that I had driven by at least 20 times in the past but had never stopped. It's called Mt. Capulin and it's about 30 miles east of Raton, NM off hwy 87. It is the only inactive volcano in the US...yea yea...boring...

My plan was to head east and ride the plains in the warmth and mind-numbing flatness but once I got moving I thought well, I'll just run down 105 from Denver real quick then head east. But once I was in Palmer Lake, I thought well, I'll just go through Garden of The Gods and then head east. But then I went to Florence and then Westcliff and then Gardener...Long story short, I ended up in Trinidad without doing any riding in the plains. The mountains were beautiful and the low temps were in the low 40's so no big loss right?

I did bring a camera but my battery died almost immediately and I didn't have the charger so not too many pictures. I did mange to take a couple of some motorcycle art at the corner of Hwy 105 and the Larkspur turnoff...

I stayed the night in Raton and watched monday night football, of course, and toured Mt Capulin the next day. It was OK but a little boring. I hiked the loop around the rim ( about 1.5 miles ) Ohhhhed and Ahhhed at the appropriate stuff and rode home...through the plains. Well, actually I got side-tracked in Trinidad and ended up taking Hwy 12 west up to La Veta pass and back down into Walsenburg. I didn't get into Walsenburg until 6PM so I took I-25 back to Denver...it was just like being in the plains...at least the mind-numbing flatness part!

The End,

Carl

Carl, Always good to hear from you.  Will look for the volcano on a map.  Like excuses to reach for a map.

Want to mention I think the last time I saw you was near this intersection when three of us braved the elements to go to Bishop's Castle and you turned around for a charity event in DV.

Hi Steve, If I remember correctly, you guys got rained on pretty good that time. Sorry to have missed that!;)

When you pull out your map look for a little road heading east just north of Raton (72 I think?). I took that road east to 325 then south to Mt Capulin...looked like a paved goat trail...loved it.

I'm REALLY likin it although the cabin is truely a 3 season place. Taking a bike up the 1/4 mile skating rink of a driveway could be interesting but hey, you're familiar with that one right?

Next spring we'll need to have a ride originating in Jefferson or Pine and end up grilling some burgers up there.

...mmmm, burgers.

Carl,

I saw your ride report to Capulin - that whole area is kind of neat.
On the LOE1000 ride last year, Capulin volcano was one of the bonus points sites - as was NRA Whittington, the little town of Roy, a remote mansion down 12 miles of dirt road, the St. James Hotel in Cimarron, etc. (cool place, btw)

Next time you're down there in search of scenery....or maybe when we all get together for a ride when the mtn roads are too gooey - head down to Wagon Mound and take the hwy to Roy. The Canadian River has a beautiful canyon a few miles east of I-25, just a neat place you'd never know was there.

Is the Tarryall road blocked in part now due to the construction, or can you go from Lake George to Jefferson (even if you have to dualsport it thru construction)?

The ice on our neighborhood streets is finally 90% melted - time to go fire up the ZX and juice up the battery while the sun shines..

Hi Blake, The road is still under construction but passable with sections of gravel and pot holes to make things interesting. But thats nothing for a bike as dual-sport capable as the ZX14 Wink....ya wildman!

I really like that area down there even if the 'safety corridors' are a little over the top. Sounds like there needs to be another trip down there...there are supposed to be some dinosaur prints just outside of Clayton that I missed as well.

Tarryall Road is gonna be like this for five years or so as Park County Road & Bridge makes their way to the Tarryall Res.  Short re-engineering/paving season.

And FWIW, I'm all for some NM rides next year!

Not so new.   A 2002 closing in on 50,000, but running strong and as tight as the day I got her.

So if you're up in South Park, you're probably looking at more ice than we are down here on the flat lands.

Hey Josh, good to see you back. I went to southern Utah last year and actually had a ride report posted for a while. Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef and hwy 12 through the Escalante Staircase are must sees.

Italy and Spain...jeolosy refuses to let me respond! Hail

Hey Steve,

As do I.   The road ain't goin' anywhere and I'll enjoy it at 45MPH as much as 70.  I ride that road for the scenary (the stuff the highway dept ain't responsible for).
