After doing some hiking in the red rocks area in northern, AZ last year, I found out that stuff gets everywhere!  I met someone who rode his dual sport in the Moab area and he told me one trick is slipping a cut section of a pantyhose over your filter.

That brings back memories of a trip years back where we did the Poison Spider trail on Bicycles. The folks gave us maps for half day trips and we turned them into day long adventures. I remember the heat and the constant need for water for it was in May. Is the Firehouse Restaurant still there?

I'm curious how much fuel you went through each day.  Does it require the KLR tanker or would a smaller machine be good too?

 Depends, do we count what spilled out while the bikes were upside down or just the fuel bunt in the engine   Thetrails we rode you would be fine with 14 liters or so, there are others that you would have to carry extra fuel

Little bikes only carry about 9l as opposed to the KLR tankers which are 23l.
(and then there's the FrogWing amphibious all-terrain-tourer )
Little bikes are easier to manage and consume less fuel, but it could be iffy... just thinking...

Based on the photos that are posted and the impressions of the terrian...a little bike won't have any issues at all.  Range would still be a question but the terrian doesn't look very difficult at all on a smaller bike.

I was there last year with a bunch of klr folks.  There were a couple of 200-225 bikes and a klr 250 with, I think, 3 gallon tanks or there abouts.  We were prepared for a gas transfer, but they made the complete white rim trail with no refills.  I don't think I would do it by myself but all 3 of the smaller bikes did make the entire 130ish miles with out help.  As far as the terrain, I agree the smaller bikes were actually easier on lots of sections.

Moab is all of the above ... White Rim looks possible for an Adventure Bike like a Vstrom 1000 or BMW1200 easy. It is a road, after all. You just need about 250 km or about 175 miles of range to make it work.

As far as Kane Creek goes. I am not going to say I could have breezed it on any bike. Being out of shape is a hazard. Look it up on YouTube and you will see dirt bikes having trouble there.

For me, pushing a 400 lb bike up some of the terrain pushed me to my limit. I enjoyed it though. I did. KLR over that terrain ... find me another ride report of KLR's doing Kane Creek. Love to read it ?

Boy, that looks like a great trip. The scenery is truly spectacular.    I have a quick question for you.  You mentioned meeting up with a truck on the switchbacks, but other than that, were there many other groups or people in the area when you were out riding?  Thanks for the great report.

I managed to hit all the Utah National Parks last summer, and with one exception, all on paved roads. Canyonlands was my favorite, would love to see it again and do some trails on some kind of *small* dual-sport. Your pics scare the heck outta me!

On the ride out to Chicken Corners we saw a couple of Quads and I believe two bikes. On the way back there were to 4x4 Jeeps that pulled over to let us pass.

Kane Creek we saw two KTM's go by while we were stopped.

On the White Rim/Schaffer there were two rental hondas at the arch, a group of rental jeeps and about 20 mountain bikers that were descending the switchbacks just before we got there.

A lot of these trails/canyons have blind corners and I would not want to ride there during the busiest times of year or during events. Could get nasty if both parties are taking in the view.
