My mother, Anita Zaffke, was killed Saturday May 2, 2009 at 5:45PM just north of Lake Zurich, IL.  She was stopped at a red light and was hit by Lora L. Hunt of Morris, IL who admitted to the police that she was painting her nails and didn't see my mom until after the collision.  My mother was killed by someone else's reckless vanity.  We need full prosecution for this offense.  We need stricter reckless vehicular homicide legislation.  Too many drivers are multi-tasking.  Too many are oblivious to their reckless decisions.  Too many good people are dying.

Our family would be truly honored if any of my mom's fellow riders would like to attend her funeral services and show support for motorcycle safety and awareness.

Ahlgrims Funeral Home (Lake Zurich, IL)
Visitation (wake) - Thursday 5/7 between 3pm & 9pm
Funeral Service - Friday 5/8 @ 10am

If you cannot attend but would like to support our cause.  Please write or call the Lake County States Attorney, your local & state Representatives & Senators to express your disgust over the current state of affairs.

Absolutely bikes are welcome at the services.  As long as it's dry enough weather.  Stay safe but we would love a big turnout, bikes and all.

Thank you for your thoughts and kind words.

Greg, I want to start by saying that you and your family have my thoughts and prayers. I can only imagine what you all are going through.

Im not a normal member on this forum, Im usually on chicagolandcruisers.com, but someone mentioned something about you asking bikes to come to the wake/funeral, so I started looking for more info. I am trying to assemble a group of riders together to cruise up to the wake. I know that you dont know me or any of my fellow riders, but in my opinion, we all ride as a group, a family. This is a trip we are more than willing to make so we can show you support. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

There is a public awareness motor cycle ride to honor Anita Thursday evening.

It is leaving from the southern Lake County Traffic Court House on rt60/83 at Diamond Lake Road at 5:45pm. The route will be 83S to 22W to S Buesching Rd to her wake.
Going in is optional.
This is for motor cycles only.

The cost is your time, as you care. And if you would like to bring something, bring black fingernails.

AND YES I just spoke to Fox News they will be at the courthouse on thursday, SO LETS SHOW  if you care.

So very sorry for your loss....... godspeed.

 Tom

I also sent the Lake County District Attorney a thought or two.....

IF YOU ARE LOCAL, you might do the same.

Mr. Waller is the Lake County District Attorney, his office would be responsible
for filing further ( criminal ) charges in this case. If you feel strongly about
this case and distracted driving in general, you should send a PROFESSIONAL
note with your name and address to Mr. Waller.

I am sending this to Mr. Waller's Office......

_______________________________________ __________

Mr. Waller,

The death of Anita Zaffke in Lake Zurich on May 3rd apparently due to
distracted driving is a real tragedy. While we are all exposed to the risk
of harm from distracted drivers, no one is more so than Motorcyclists.

This could have as easily been a bus full of kids, your mother driving home
from shopping or someones father running to get the family dinner.

Would request you pursue this case to the utmost extent of the law to
send a message to all distracted drivers that there are consequences
to taking the life of another human being while driving carelessly.

Thank You

Greg sincerest condolences of the loss of your mom. This was a senseless and preventable death.
If I lived closer to your area I'd be there. We'll never forget this story and can only
hope that justice is served in this case, (if there can be any justice in a situation like this).
Best wishes to you and your family in this very hard time.

I have also emailed a letter to the state attorney generals office requesting that this
case be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Greg,

I am not from this forum either, but word of a biker down like this spreads fast.  I am from a Harley forum and just wanted to offer my condolences for the loss of your mother.  I saw this news on CNN today and was shocked.  Then coming online to the Harley forum there was a thread.

This was a senseless act of neglect and purely discusting.  I wish I could be there to ride with support, but I know there will be so many of us to be there supporting you and your mother in this tragedy.

I hope justice is served, and please accept my condolences.

That you take a family tragedy and try to make it do some good speaks volumes about the person your mom was, and the kind of family she raised.

My deepest condolences to your whole family.

Gregg;

My eyes are wet as I type this message, and I suppose that's weird, cuz "real bikers" are not supposed to be able to cry, right?

  BULLSHIT!

I am so, so sorry to hear of this highly avoidable tragedy resulting in the death of your still young and very beautiful mother.

Perhaps the reason this impacts me so strongly is the fact that I also live in the NW burbs (Algonquin) and almost the exact same thing happened to me.

Fortunately, the stupid woman in the minivan that rear-ended my Gold Wing (also at a stoplight, and at about the same time of day) was only doing about 30, instead of 55. She was simultaneously talking on the phone and yelling at her kids in the back seat (unbelted) when she "didn't see the motorcycle", as she repeatedly told the East Dundee police after they pulled me and my smashed bike from under her Chevy Astro's front bumper. I saw it coming (mere seconds prior to the collision), and braced myself for the impact.

Your dear mom most likely never had that chance.

It is small comfort to know that she died doing something she loved, and she probably never knew what hit her.

My heart SO goes out to you and your family, and I will be there tomorrow to tell you so in person.

Gregg,
There are no words that right this wrong.   As motorcyclists, we all fear the same perils each time we ride, and my heart goes out to you.   I will be leaving Chicago at 3:00 to join you at the Lake County Traffic Courthouse.   I have sent the word to about 100 other people. We will do all we can to stand with you and see that your mother receives the honor she so deserves and that her murderer does not walk away with a slap on the wrist.

May you find some comfort in knowing you are not alone, and your mother is riding a golden road on 2 wheels to a place without this kind of pain. God has blessed you with having been raised by a wonderful mother who has given you the strength to stand up to this.

Godspeed Anita.

PNW Riders in Portland have this story on our board:

A number of us have expressed our thoughts on the board.

Your Mom must have really been some kind of woman.  56 and motorbiking, a rare and special individual.

I'd hope you'd mention something of your Mom's Life on the board.  We hear a lot about people close to us, and people we don't know.

It would be good for us and perhaps for legislators to know something of your Mom, about this rare person, about this tragic loss.

She was certainly more than a motorcyclist, and a name.

When you have time, and feel inclined please share with the community.

My mother almost lost her life in her teens on a Motorbike as a passenger, she got back on a bike with her husband years later.

I am a Bicyclist and Motorbiker too.

If I can speak for our group, we feels sadness of your loss.

God Bless,

pv2

Greg, I live too far away to attend in person, but I wanted to give you my condolences.  Your mother and your family have been in my thoughts since I read about this on the news.  I've written to the Assistant State's Attorney and asked for strict sentencing.  Sad

I will be there...

i receved this from another group i ride with.

This is a note written by one of the gals in my girl group and is about the woman killed last weekend when rearended by a woman painting her nails while driving.

Posted at Chicago Area Women Riders:

Anita Zaffke and I were good friends. She was a solo rider for the most part...just looking for a riding buddy or two.  She found me...actually I was the person who filled the vacancy she left when she moved on to a different job.  We met a coworker gathering.

You would have liked her a lot.  She was warm and generous with an insatiable curiosity and an unapologetic enthusiasm for life.

But, I did get in a couple of day rides with Anita last year and one weekend camping trip up to Devil's Lake.  We had plans for a long Memorial Day camping trip this month to DC to explore the Smithsonian (by cage, I'm broke and bikeless, again)

She was an excellent and safe rider.  Two years ago she took a three week solo trip on her Shadow (named "Miss M"), camping the entire way, to Vancouver.

I haven't read all the posts here, but I will be at her services tomorrow evening.  With my nails painted black.

Pay Anita's legacy forward - convince at least *one* person that a 3000lb motorized chunk of metal is a potential weapon...it is not their living room, kitchen or bathroom.

Thanks

I understand the desire for a large turnout -- on a number of levels, and I plan to take part in the gathering.

Please be careful when riding as a large group, or, better yet, consider splitting into smaller groups. It'll be the evening rush, many of the folks gather will not have ridden together before (never a good combination), and there's no reason to give cagers further reason to disregard us (like blocking all four lanes of traffic while we wait for the last rider to catch up).

It would be sad and ironic in the extreme if a rider were to be injured as a result of the stacking of negative tolerances this gathering potentially represents.

Greg,

I am so sad for you and your family. This is truely tragic.

I am married to a woman your mothers age who is fanatical about her motorcycling. My wife wears gear and the high vis vest and is happiest it seems when riding around and with our friends who ride.

Shows senseless things happen to often. When I think about your mom I become very sad.

When I think about the driver I wonder what she is like. How is she in other aspects of her life. How many near misses has she had in the past that she did not take a lesson from.

This is way to messed up to imagine yet it happened.

I've managed to get out of work early so I can make this. As a photographer, I intend to document this and make available free of charge all images I shoot today for the use of furthering the cause of justice and proper legislation in hopes that a tragedy such as this never happens again.

I urge any other photographers and videographers participating today to do the same. The more documentation there is about this event, the more information there is to spread around.

I have posted this information to the Chicago region BMW club and the ADV site.  It is late notice since I just heard about this by email today.   My deepest condolesces.   This is happening way too much.   I just lost a freind two weeks ago in New Mexico from a young lady making a left turn.   No charges there yet either.   She was supposedly not on a cell phone and I truely hope that is true.   This Lora Hunt will have to live knowing she took a life due to her negligence.

I will be there.

Best wishes to all taking part in this.  All I can offer up is condolences and encouragement.

It may be worth something to have a bunch of bikers paint their nails black as Greg has done, a visual more jarring and conversation-provoking than a black armband.  Maybe we can convince enough four-wheel pilots to take this seriously.

It looks like this is gearing up to be a very large motorcycle procession.

maybe the bikes should jamm things up a bit and traffic should be tied up for a while, let the cagers wonder what's going on and when they
find out they'll have time to reflect on it a bit.

Amy just got back. I guess there was some woman from ABATE claiming the whole ride was her doing.

She also said that there was a very good turnout and that a good amount of attention was directed towards the riders which is good.

Now all we can do is hope for some positive change.

1 camera guy with reporter.

I'm not sure giving the interview to the ABATE prez was all that wise.  2nd phrase out of his mouth was a helmet issue, and the whole purpose jumped the shark immediately after.

This wasn't (entirely) about legislation, it was about awareness and personal responsibility.  We might have lost that.

Blocking traffic at each intersection probably raised a ton of good will too.  Headscratch

I should clarify what was said by the woman handing out ABATE membership forms. This was not an interview but as she was passing out forms she stated that they were responsible for the gathering today, which I find hard to believe. If it was just talk, then shame on that ABATE chapter for their blatant opportunism.

I also salute FOX for having the class to not only cover this event but to do so in a classy manner. I was in a conversation with their camera man and made sure he knew.

What was the media presense like?

The video was already posted here from Fox news. They did an great job and Byron Harlan was a class-act off camera as well. He seemed genuinely impressed at the turn-out and seemed to know that he had a good story. (Damm, he's TALL!)

The Chicago Suntimes had a photographer at the starting point and I suspect my black nails will make the paper Friday.

It looks like I was holding everyone up with my feet dangling cuz I was.  Lol The plan was to stop at the fire station so everyone could catch-up. Then we where to ride into the parking lot as one big group nonstop. I seen the fire-station and slowed down, checked my mirrors, when I looked back forward I seen a big-ass camera trained on us and a crowd of family standing by the funeral home building watching us. So I decided to just ride in. It worked out great because there where no gaps in the bikes coming in, just one big-ass crowd. I talked to one of the family while we watch everyone taking that turn, he was visibly choked-up and said; "Thanks for all this, it means a lot to us" It must-of been a good 10 minutes before our last bike made that turn, quite impressive to watch I might say.

Thanks Sharkette for having this ride idea and doing all the cat-herding at the courthouse, I think everyone owes you cold beverage.  Beerchug

I also had a chance to chat with Greg Zaffke II. He's a very intelligent and well put-together guy. I seen he was holding a stack of cards from all the other MC clubs that where there. So I did what any good ST.Ner would do, I gave him one of our stickers.  Bigsmile  and requested he keep us informed of the latest by posting here. Interestingly, he told me, at his mothers wake mind you, "This is all for you guys".

And that's my short ride report.

Good post Tony T. I agree the Fox clip was just right. The three newsreaders all used the appropriate tone, Dale Nanghton and Scott Doniger were effective speakers too.

After learning of the tragedy here on ST-N, I posted two petition links on ADVrider.  We got quite a few more signatures for the petition.

Also, Fox's editor(s) should be thanked for their excellent job of removing the self aggrandizing parts from a few of the interviews. I remember overhearing one of the guys who had to make sure to mention his position in the Toys For Tots organization amongst other things that had nothing to do with the situation at hand. The publicity hounds got nothing for their efforts, I'm happy to say. When I post my images, they wont be amongst them. They'll get nothing from me either.

I didnt get the gentleman's name but the Fox cameraman was a very nice guy if I didn't mention that before. He also truly knew what it was about.

Again, Fox showed that they had some class.

First off, I was approached by Anita's brother who wanted everybody to know he said "thanks".

Second, somebody from the local ABATE chapter was taking credit for all the bikes showing up. Of that I have my doubts. Can anybody shed some light on that?

I wrote a public letter to gregg & maria a friend of anita's. I posted on the web site I posted under my stupid stupid cager stn post. I signed it from stn. gregg read it that day & he in turn posted up on our forum. I then emailed, every riding group, posted the ride on ride boards, and emailed numerous media outlets. to invite show support & raise awareness.
I met their/abates pres, and thanked them for joining up while we were @ the courthouse along w every1 from all the groups. the photog @ courthouse was from suntimes, they are to call me for their article in sundays paper.
all clear?

I am glad I asked him to. he did a great job. ty TT.
we did get split on rt22 by a 2cagers who were not likng being blocked. I don't know who was in front of me as he was from 1 of the othr groups,,I think we had 20-30 riding groups w 5-12 riders per- I met em all, thanked them all for coming to show support ..a deacon from I forget what group did a prayer b4 we left courthouse too..I chose mid way back,,am guessing we had near 1/2 Mile pack,, but the cager excellerated @ the light coming right @ the guy in front of me & me. he was riding left/ I was right /we were in the intersection/ we both laid rubber as we quick stopped--the cagers were not going to, they were coming right at us/a rider was blocking north intersection/ no1 was blockIng south intersection/ we were going west.bound.. the rider in front of me was directly in front of cager when we stopped,,,thought fight was guna start.. the biker in front of me then stayed put,,cager was fuming as was cager next to him trying to make a left..and then we went on through..ty who evr u were..riders who were directly bhind us saw it & then all passed through..other than that incident mid way in the line up/ 2 blocks to go,, was a great effort by all.. pps did block,,cagers did look,,we did hav black nails,,we left in a pack,,stayed as a group, behaved well riding together ..the entire route--think it was 6-9 miles maybe,,I met the entire family,, they had a petition,,I think most people signed it..I did

Ok, once I'm done going through my images I will be posting them up somewhere for distribution. Because there was a loudmouth from Lake County ABATE claiming credit for the whole thing, as the official copyright holder of the images I will be expressly forbidding ABATE from ANY usage of my images. There was a woman going around to all of us at the funeral home passing out membership forms while claiming credit for organizing the whole thing.

We have our own Sharkette to thank for having the social conscience and spine to get everybody together and show our support.

My original plan was to freely distribute the images to any organization/group/person who could make use of them in an awareness campaign but now I will retain all copyrights and ownership just to legally forbid ABATE from using them. Each image will have my copyright and statement on them (Small print of course).

Lake County ABATE:  Twofinger for the self aggrandizement and to Sharkette; I'll ride with you into the storm.  Clap Hail

i agree with Fred on the copyrite thing. this isn't the first time ABATE has tried to take credit for something that others have arranged.

I have never been a supporter of ABATE b/c of some of there tactics and self centred attitude.

I know this isn't the place to start a debate so i will get off my soap box and say no more.

I'm British, not American, and had never heard of ABATE.  Their web-site suggests to me they have their heart in the right place, even if I for one don't necessarily share all their views.  Nevertheless, it does seem wrong to me that one group should try to claim the credit for all the different groups that turned up at the funeral, or that wrote to their congressmen/ elected officials, whatever.  And I can understand people who are annoyed by the claim-all-the-credit behaviour, especially if the claimants are hijacking things to push their own agenda.

But, really, who cares who gets the credit?

Mrs Zaffke's death was a tragic waste of a human life, but maybe the resulting publicity will contribute to an eventual result of a law being passed that will save lives in future. Exactly which sub-group did most to contribute is not the issue. This is neither the time nor the place for infighting.

the whole parade thing is a mistake, IMO, but no one went down - yet another thing to be grateful for.

I agree with you to a point. ABATE in concept is a fine organization but like many, it is rife with ego issues amongst others. There will be no infighting, though. One of our own went through a great deal of effort to put it all together without the desire for reward and/or recognition and to have an organization try to claim credit for her hard work is reprehensible and will be addressed.

Got there late, and as such missed the parade ride to the Funeral Home.
I was gearing up as FOX was setting up their transmitter truck for the 9:00 (or 10:00?) news segment.

Thanks for cat-herding, Sharkette!

A noble cause...and thanks to all who could ride in...and to those would were there in spirit, as well.

No thanks needed or sought, I simply rode from point A to point B and happened to have 200 rider follow.  Lol

Again Sharkette, a huge, huge  Bigok for getting all us rolling on short notice and bringing it to the attention of the media. (And the best looking cruiser bike in the pack I'll say.  Thumbsup )

About blocking traffic; Understand the mob mentality was there in full-force among some riders. At the end of the prayer I should-of made it clear that we planned to wait by the firehouse to regroup, lesson learned. The pace was set at 5mph below the speed limit to help riders stay together or catch-up, I never requested blockers. When the question did come-up after the prayer I should-of took the time to give a complete ride plan then and there in order to avoid confusion and slow down the "We are behind schedule, let's roll" mentality. Lesson learned.

Thanks to all the clubs and all the riders that where there, I believe we made quite a statement.  Clap

Tony – ya did great with the hand you were dealt – the mob mentality was strong in many of the riders that showed up last night, and trying to get them to alter their M.O. could very easily have resulted in mayhem and injury.

Ride report part 2; For your entertainment and amusement.

So no shit there I am, expected to lead 200 or so riders to a place I've never been. Confused We just got done with the prayer gathering and the "screw the cars, we're blocking them" mentality is strong with a select few. Dualxhst has agreed to drive sweep in his intimidation truck and Scott-BMW walks up to me and offers to drive in front with his unofficial police car with the fancy-pants lights. All the cats are heading off the their bikes, putting on helmets, or do-rags whatever the case may be. Bikes are starting to roar to life as I give Scott the quick route. "Right turn out of the lot onto Rt83, it does a soft turn right about a 1/2 mile down, at Rt 22 turn right, at Buesching Rd turn left and the funeral home will be after the fire-house." This doesn't seem to compute so we walk over to my bike as more and more cats are starting their rides. I quickly remove my zoomed-in printed up maps and show him. He replies; "You confused me"  Crazy So I tell him to ride sweep. Thunder7 steps in with some Star-Trek type gadget and quickly gives him the address. I look around while stuffing my map away to see everyone sitting on a running bike and looking at me. I glance over to Sharkette and she is giving me the "Come-on dude, lets go" look. As fast as I can manage I gear-up and start my bike. Thankfully she starts on the first try.  Bigsmile

I do a quick ride to the front of the ST.ners and look at my nameless wing-woman / co-lead, she reacts by not moving.  Headscratch So I proceed to the exit of the lot and stop so everyone can line-up. NOBODY moves and I'm there all by my lonesome just hanging out.  Lol Dualxhst is there and asks, "Are you lead?" I reply; "Yea, but nobody seems to following" He then says; "Aw hell, I'll get them moving." He jumps into action and soon I have Hogs lining up behind me. I explain the route to my new co-lead and he replies; "Whatever, I'm just going to do whatever you do." Great.  Lol

Scott-BMW pulls alongside me now and explains he GPS is telling him to go left instead of right. "I know dude, that's because it's the quickest route. but we're going right." With everyone now ready we exit the lot and proceed on our not-so-merry way. (It's a somber occasion) We make it passed the soft turn on 83, turn right on 22 and hit a couple of red lights. About halfway down 22 at a red light I decide to glance at my tankbag to remember what street we need to turn onto. It's then that I discover I folded my map wrong and the street is on the underside facing down.  EEK!

SHIT!! The vision of taking 200 bikes into a U-turn enters my brain. Then maybe everyone will just follow me into Nebraska. Or if I go WFO I could lose most of them. I'd have to change my name. The ST.ners are way back there so I would only have to ditch the HD's around me. Boy I hope Scott knows where we need to turn. . . . . .  couch

Leave my fancy pants lights out of it!  We got there safe didnt we? Smile  And the local police would have been a tad upset if I showed up in a squad w/o their permission!

I want to thank you for letting me take the lead (even tho my gps disagreed with you)  but we got there....  It was quite overwhelming to look back and see the line of bikes behind me....  It really hit home.. I called 411 twice to make sure the address for the funeral home was correct along the route!  Trust me,  I didnt want to swing 200 bikes thru a white hen parking lot....

I want to be clear,  what I said to Fox was NOT about me or my accident,  it was to make a damm point that things have to change...  I am alive,  she is not...  I want nothing more than to make this a true cause for all of us.  I think petitions are great,  but I also think a presence needs to be made (a polite one) at any court date she has.  My dream would to be a very large rally in Springfield at the capitol to raise awareness...

About ABATE,  I called the state office during the day and was told 'this was not on their agenda'....  Thats all I will say about that....

All we need is a organized effort amongst all the clubs and MRO's.....  I will now get off my soapbox...

What papers covered the event?  I would like to make sure our state reps and lake county get a copy of them...

Scott (fancy lights)...

You did just fine Mr fancy-lights. I thought you gave the most meaningful interview of the bunch. A first hand account of what can happen with inattentive drivers. I'm just happy you where there and alive to do so.  Beerchug

Amen, Lights (do I hear a new handle in the making?) -- your comments added weight to the fact that thjis was not an isolated incident, but, rather, another example of a wide-spread phenom . . . . . . thanks for speaking so well!

I want to extend my gratitude to all of you that were able to join the Motorcycle Awareness Ride to my mother's wake as well those sending their condolences and prayers.  It was a great turn out of almost 200 bikes and I'm sure my mother was smiling. The community & compassion that we've seen is truly overwhelming.

I am going to take some time to grieve and then prepare to work very hard to get justice for my mom and help push for change.

Thank you very much for all your support and stay safe.

Anita was a dear friend of mine...I have written a "eulogy" of sorts, full of my memories of our time together. I believe it gives some insight to the amazing woman she was. It's a little lengthy to post here, but I will put a link to it when I get the "technology piece" figured out.
