Diagnosing Ignition Coil Issues

Hey Folks, I'm following the 2 manuals in checking out "lack of a spark" and hard starting; checked the ignition coils resistance - primary is OK on both, but the coil secondary with the plug cable attached is about double the recommended value (almost 20 Kohm); however, it comes in at book value with the lead off, measuring the coil alone. The foot-long rear cylinder spark plug lead is about 10Kohms itself....[[I am the wrong kinda engineer for this, but resistances seem additive.?!]] So with the lead attached, as shown how to measure by the book-the coil secondary value is twice spec; is this where I may have a prooblem?
