Aug 1st, I rolled out of bed at 4am, and left the house at a little after 4:30am...

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9853.jpg

My grandmother passed away, and the family service was scheduled for Aug 3rd, in Longmont, Colorado. Yeah, it would have been easy enough to fly out and get a rental car and fly back, but why not make an adventure out of it? I have always wanted to do a long extended trip on the bike and just go see stuff and different places. I also wanted to see if I could pull off a Iron Butt Bun Burner Gold, which is 1500 miles in under 24 hours, so I prepped the Aprilia about as well as I could. Serviced the forks. New Penske shock. New Pilot Road 2CT's. Brake fluid. Clutch fluid. New starter solenoid just in case. Packed a new King Bearing for the rear single sided swingarm just in case too. Bought a nice compact sleeping bag and planned on not getting a hotel room anywhere if I could help it while on the road.

I got my first fuel receipt in Carthage, NC a short time later for the time stamp for the official start of the Iron Butt ride.... 4:58 AM

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/IM000269.jpg

10 minutes later, the trip almost ended when I came around a favorite country road to discover wet clumped grass cuttings covering the road, but after recovering from the sideways slide and wiping out my shorts, I continued on. From NC, via I-40, I hit Tennessee through to Nashville, where I cut north on I-24 up to Kentucky...

 http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9867.jpg

This was kinda cool to see in the morning...

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9858.jpg

24 takes me up to I-57 in Illinois and on through St Louis, Missouri after hitting I-64........

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9873.jpg

I see this guy in St Louis as well. We have all seen pics of him!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9878.jpg

Just after St Louis, I hit I-70, which will take me the rest of the way into Colorado.... Next up was Kansas....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0327.jpg

Somewhere in Kansas is where I rolled over the 1000 mile mark for the Saddle Sore 1000, which was completed in 15 hours and 33 minutes due to stop and go traffic in a couple areas that slowed progress down.... This left me less than 9 hours to complete an additional 500 miles, so I was worried about fatigue setting in when it got dark.... Note the top posted speed to this point....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9886.jpg

I actually think I was better off crossing Kansas at night, because there is NOTHING there! I kept on rolling though and logging miles, though the pace was a bit slower until after midnight.

300 miles to go and I started seeing shadows at the edge of the road and was seriously debating about throwing in the towel, so I stopped at a rest area, and just chilled out a bit. Walked, talked to myself, and said, Fuck it. Let's roll.....

I had 275 miles to go, and was running on empty already. It was dark as hell, and shadows were playing games with my head. I was seeing markings on the pavement where deer, and other critters, had been struck on the road, so I was looking at EVERYTHING.....

200 miles to go and I had to take another time out. Walk. Talk. Breathe. Take the gear off a bit and relax...

Let's roll some more.... I must have passed those same two trucks 10 times. Stop, rest a bit, walk around and wake up, then hit the road again..... Pass those guys again....

At 1430 miles, my instrument cluster died....... Well, fuck. How am I going to get a witness to sign off on a dead odometer reading? Maybe they will take the GPS accumulated miles....

That last 100 miles took for freaking ever! I was hallucinating at times. I was trying to go to sleep. I was pulling off at rest areas and splashing water on my face, then ride another 25 miles and do it all over again.....

23 hours and 37 minutes saw my last time receipt with 1500.8 miles showing on the GPS  :cheers2:  Now, I was so out of it that I did not get a pic of the GPS at this point, and since the guages had died, I had to start using it for my speedo and trip meter functions, so I reset the trip setting before thinking about getting a pic. I am still pissed about that blunder.....  :red:

This is the final time stamp receipt showing the local Colorado time, which is 2 hours earlier than Eastern time...

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/IM000270.jpg

50 miles later, I found a field to park in, laid my sleeping mat down, rolled out the sleeping bag, and passed out for 3 hours after taking the obligatory celabration shot!

This is what I woke up to in the morning..... Colorado plains and a fantastic sunrise!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9893.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9894.jpg

From here, I only had about 120 miles to finish up to get to my Aunt's house in Aurora, but when I rolled into the area, I was feeling refreshed and decided to cut south to Colorado Springs and go see the Garden of the Gods instead....

I thought FlyGirl might find this one interesting.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9944.jpg

After leaving Colorado Springs, I headed back north to my cousin's house where my Mom was to be arriving around 3PM, and finally got a shower and relaxed. I ended up staying at my cousin's that night as well and slept like a rock!

Monday was to be the day of the service for my grand mother, so I rode up to Frederick, where an uncle lives, to try and repair my dash if I could, which was unsuccessful.... Hit up a Startbucks for a pick me up..

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9956.jpg

I was also amused at the name of this gas station...... Exactly WTF do they sell in there?

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9957.jpg

I rode to the service with my uncle, and then afterward, rode back down south again to hit up Pikes Peak and ride to the summit.... I passed through Denver on the way and also by the Mile High stadium of the Broncos...

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF9993.jpg

I headed back down and decided to take a pic of some of the excellent roads that are used in the Pikes Peak hill climb races! Not long after, I got my ass chewed out by a park ranger for "excessive speed". When I showed him that my instrument cluster was dead, he was not sure what to say, so he just told me to slow it the hell down!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0014-1.jpg

On back to Aroura to my cousin's place, where I spent the night again....

I get up Tuesday morning and get ready to head up north to the Estes Park area, where we are all meeting to spead ashes around the Bear Lake area as per Grandma's request, and when I get out to the bike I notice a fluid leak of some type, so I am like WTF? I pulled the left hand fairing off and find a clutch slave cylinder leak, which I was able to fix pretty quick, and was on my way to Estes Park via Boulder, CO. Once you get past Boulder, you start realizing what kind of roads you are in for!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0032.jpg

Pulled into Estes Park and was almost overwealmed by the view!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0020.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0039.jpg

Everyone met up and we all headed to the Rocky Mountain National Park to head to Bear Lake...

My Mom on the hiking trail to Bear Lake....

All the family members in front of the final resting place.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0076.jpg

And the view from where we spread the ashes. I think she is happy with the spot we picked out.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0095.jpg

After everything was done, we headed back to Estes Park where I was to stay with my Mom in a cabin and then head out in the morning...

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0264.jpg

Wed morning, and I headed out to go up north to my birth place of Cheyenne, Wyoming......

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0113.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0117.jpg

This is the Air Force base where I was born....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0119.jpg

After this pic op, I headed back down into Colorado to the Ft Collins area, where I hit CO 14 to start heading across the mountians towards Steamboat Springs. This turned out to be an epic ride and I ended up with over 500 miles for the day and some increadible sites!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0123.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0125.jpg

Looks down at the GPS and see this and it's like, "Oh hell yes!"!!!!!!!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0128.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0134.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0136.jpg

After heading across the divide on 14, I came into an open plains area in between mountian ranges. This was Walden, CO, where apparently Moose are in abundance.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0144.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0148.jpg

After going through Walden, I continued on 14 to 40 to head to Speamboat Springs. This was a wicked cool piece of pavement with fast sweepers and big time elevation changes! I got into Speamboat Springs and about the same time, my GPS stopped working, so I was like FACK!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0153.jpg

This is cool because you can see the ski runs on the mountains....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0155.jpg

I found a WalMart and bought another GPS and headed out back up 40 to Granby, where I picked up 34 to head through the National Park area.... This day saw some of the most incredible views.........

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0167.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0170.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0257.jpg

After going through the park, I got back to the cabin in Estes Park ready for a beer and the hot tub! I hung out with Mom and planned on heading out Thrusday morning to start heading south, and then back east. It's hard to even describe some of the roads I traveled, but they were absolutely a blast to ride, and the scenery was amazing!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0270.jpg

Maybe THIS is why! SWEET!

An old gold mine near Black Hawk, which is now a casino town...

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0276.jpg

After getting through Black Hawk, I hit up I-70 and headed west towards Breckenridge....

Through the tunnels....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0303.jpg

Headed back across the divide again....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0309.jpg

Cool shot showing the valley via reflection!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0312.jpg

Once I got out of the mountains, I rode through Pueblo, CO, and kept on heading east. My goal for the night was Wichita, Kansas, and to start heading south on I-35 towards Oklahoma depending on how tired I was getting. My primary goal was to get within 1000 miles of Cherokee, NC, where I was to stop Friday night. Somewhere around Holly, CO, the bike started acting up in the low RPM range and sounded like it was running on one cylinder at idle, but it was fine at speed, so I keep rolling. Ultimately, I rode it this wall all the way to Cherokee, with a fuel milage drop to 40 mpg or so vice the 48 to 50 mpg I had been seeing so far. I was more interested in making miles than troublshooting, so I kept rolling until just before Oklahoma, where I found a field to lay out my sleeping mat and bag and passed out for a few hours.......

During this stint into Kansas, I was fighting 30 to 40 mph cross winds, and was litteraly riding sideways for over 400 miles! That crap wore me out big time!
Much of this.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0329.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0331.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0337.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0342.jpg

This guy stayed with me until dark.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0335.jpg

Friday morning saw an excellent morning, so I packed up, and hit the road again and soon found myself in Oklahoma...

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0343.jpg

Then Arkansas.......

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0345.jpg

Getting closer!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0354.jpg

I finally got back to NC around 10:00 pm and headed through Pigeon Forge area, which was a huge mistake since I did not know it was a big tourist attraction. Once I got through there though, I took 441 over the mountains into Cherokee, where I finally arrived about 11:45 pm after logging over 1100 miles that day. A buddy of mine works at the KOA camp ground there and comped me a cabin for the weekend, and my wife met me there, so it was a cool arrival!

Saturday morning, I woke up to this.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0359.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0358.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0360.jpg

I pulled the bike into one of the camp ground garages to see if I could sort out why it was running like crap. Lifted the tank, and sure as hell, found a loose vacuum line to the stepper motor! Instant cure!  :cheers2:  That was the point where Mark and I decided to go riding!

Yeah, I know. You are thinking, "Katana?" That guy embarrasses the majority of sport bike guys with that bike though, so don't be fooled!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0363.jpg

Mark took me on one of his "secret" loops which was excellent! I had never riden those roads before and had a blast!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0370.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0373.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0375.jpg

Yeah, I have been on this one before!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0378.jpg

Back to Cherokee for the evening.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0380.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0381.jpg

Good food, good friends, great roads, and a fantastic wife. What more can a guy ask????

Sunday morning, I packed up for the finish of the trip and planned on heading down to Bryson and picking up 28 south all the way to Anderson, SC, which is close to where my Dad lives...

Bridal Falls......

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0385.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0388.jpg

Entering Highlands......

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0389.jpg

If you have never riden 28 south to Warwoman road, you are missing out! DO IT!

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0392.jpg

Crossing into Georgia....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0391.jpg

and into South Carolina.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0393.jpg

and finally into Anderson County, which is where Donna and I are both from.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0394.jpg

In front of the High School I graduated from, in Williamston, SC....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0395.jpg

I visited my Dad for a short time, and hit the road again to finish up and make it home. Unfortunately, the bike had other plans.......

Gaffney, SC. I always use the peach water tower as a land mark.....

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0399.jpg

My final fuel stop, in Gaffney. It was here that the bike decided "no more". No electrical power at all. I jumped it off with the help from a friendly motorist, but as soon as I disconnected the cables, it would die again. Well, crap. 140 miles to go, and the bike gives up. That sucks......

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee281/ronoyler/ADV/Colorado/DSCF0403.jpg

I called the wife and found that she was about an hour away, so she detoured over and picked me up. I was pretty dissapointed in finishing this way, but it is what it is. I later found out that the battery had decided at that point to have a melt down. That's it. Just the battery....

This was, to me, and absolutely epic trip with milage goals getting there and only a couple goals once there, but just the opportunity to go see sites as they happen. Would I do it again? Damn right I would!

Different. Both most definately have their virtues, but Colorado is more of the breathtaking variety. Course, maybe that's just because I spend a good bit of time in the NC hills and have become a little numb to it?

First off, sorry about your grandma.

Secondly, what a kick a$$ ride and great pics to document it  Thumbsup  I rode to my G-Pa's funeral last year and it was an incredibly introspective, calming ride.  Only did 1000miles total but it was great to be on the rode by myself and just time to think and ponder life.  Very peaceful.

Thanks for the terrific morning.

Over well cooked (slightly crispy thick cut) bacon and eggs scrmbples in fat with some salsa and cup of coffee I read your write up then made my wife read it.

After we were done we decided to move back to CO - eventually - soon if possible.

My gradfather is scattered in a similar place not far away from there, I hope you treasure teh experience of htat trip.

Nice ride report!  So sorry your destination wasn't for a better reason.

I had to say something, because I'm pretty sure I saw you at GoG taking the picture of the entrance sign!  I was riding to meet some friends and happened to notice a red Futura fully tour-packed parked on the shoulder.  I think you were digging in the tailbag.

Sounds like you had a great ride!

Really enjoyed your report and pics.  Love that you returned to your home state and still went riding for a couple of days.

Thanks for posting!

Hey Ron, Dano here. I met ya at Cheapbastards East Coast Triumph Rally. I was riding the RC51, you rode with me and the Australians down the BRP to Asheville to stay at Kartstars(Fred's) house.

My condolences on the passing of your grandpa.

It appears that you did some of the same roads that we did on our ride east to the Rally. It was nice meeting ya and trying to keep that Futura in sight ya damn fast fucker.

I still have to complete our blog that we did on our 19 day trip....its going to be entertaining.

I still feel sorry for that poor little dog that you and Cheap ate...

Hey Dano! Good to hear from ya! I was wondering how the rest of your trip went! I had a blast riding with you and the Aussies and had a nice ride home that weekend. Funny how an overnight trip turned into a three day weekend!

I would love to see your trip report and pics. That was an epic one for sure!

Nice report! Congrats on the Iron Butt accomplishments.  Thumbsup

My condolences regarding your grandpa - I imagine he lived a good long life.

Now, for that Futura: You didn't say anything about rider comfort over the distance, unless I missed it. I've read many raves about the Futura's seat, but how is the riding position on a multiple day, long distance ride?

Did you get the instrument cluster back in order? And was the battery failure anything to do with the charging system, or just an old battery?

I ask because, one day, when everything is aligned just right, I'd love to pick up a Futura. It's one of my favorites.   Smile

My GRANDMOTHER lived a full life and left her mark. She will be missed, but unfortunately, everyone loses those they love.

Rider comfort? With a Futura, that is simply NOT an issue. It's the best seat I have ever seen on a bike. Period. Every morning, I wanted to get on the bike and go somewhere. See something. Just go ride. I had multiple days with over 1000 miles on this trip, and not once did I agonize over getting back on the bike. If you want a comfy bike for long distance, it's hard to beat the Futura. I own a Gold Wing as well if that tells you anything......

I ended up getting another instrument cluster. I am the guy that pioneered how to repair these things since the primary point of failure is common with them. With mine, it came back on a couple times which tells me there is a bad connection somewhere, but I have not found the problem. Since one was offered to me free of charge, I took it and used it.

The battery just decided on a bad time to give up. No other issues than that and I have done probably around 4K miles on it since installing a new battery without issues.

You can find the bikes pretty cheap these days. Low milage ones pop up from time to time on Fleabay. There are a few areas to pay attention to, (chargin system connectors and fuel coupler) but once those are addressed, it's a pretty bullet proof bike with a solid motor.
