"We have a farm, and we have a problem with feral cats.  This may sound harsh, but in the past we have shot them when we could and humanely killed them whenever we can.  I was recently told that this may be against the law.  How do we handle them?"

Did you mention that you killed kittens?  Did you tell him you bashed their heads in?  By definition, kittens are not feral.

If you REALLY want and HONEST answer, print out your original post, take it to the police station and ask them if you committed a crime.

Hi Clay (and others),

So there is no misunderstanding....  I (and many others) believe that the proper method of dealing with the kittens would have been to take them to a shelter.  Give away directly first, No-kill shelter second, Humane Society third.  If cost is a problem, numbers one and three should be free (if not number two as well).  It is their job (at the shelters) to determine the correct course of action with regard to the entire shelter population.  Kittens may go quite quickly at some of the shelters close to you.  Make a couple phone calls if you can spare a little time.  While you are there dropping off the kittens, ask them where you can donate to support trap/neuter/release to prevent further unwanted kittens from being born.  When you donate (which you should, if you REALLY want to help solve the problem), ask if they can help you with the (implied) gazillions of feral cats at your Dad's farm.  If the problem is so bad, they should be more than happy to help.  Don't forget to tell them that you believe you can help out by smashing in the skulls of any kittens you run across.  Have your camera ready to capture the facial expression of gratitude (or something) that you will surely receive.  They should appreciate all that you are doing to help.

Once again for total clarity......To kill them yourself is not appropriate given that there are other options that would be free, or cost very little.  In addition, killing kittens is a felony in your state.  BTW, the kittens are NOT feral or pests by definition.

Since there are other misunderstandings here, the link about feral cats argued that attempting to eradicate feral cats was not as successful as maintaining a colony of sterile individuals.  Hence the trap, neuter, release methodology.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can clear up for you.
