#@$#@!!! I scratched my tank! Need Touchup paint.

So, I'm used to running a strap-on tank bag(insert bad joke here...). It has a tank protector built into the strap. My other bikes have all had stick-on protectors or tank bras on them.

Well, the Z1000 has a weird tank, and I haven't found a tank bag that fits right in my collection. I was riding it home from work, and apparently, my not-so-soft belt buckle worked its way against the tank. You guessed it, scratched the hell out of it. Got off at the bike at home and about fainted.

So, anyone know of a good place to order touch-up paint? Its just basic gloss black. I can cover it with a stick-on tank protector with a graphic and not see it, but part of it is down to the metal.

Yup, I'm an idiot. I admit it. Not one of my more enlightened moments.

Are you sure it needs painting and can not be buffed out?

Right down to metal.  There is no buffing this out.

Turtle do some coloured polishes which are pretty effective.

I'll see if the auto parts store has any.  But,  I think it's beyond fill-in.  It's about an inch wide and two tall.

That's why I got a tank cover.

I had a tank with a padded bottom to protect the tank.  A tiny pebble got lodged under the magnet and when I took it off the bike....ZIIIIP across the paint.

One of the things I do with my magnetic is position it, drop it straight down, then flop the magnet flaps in place.

Removing I do the same thing, lift the magnet flaps away from the tank, and straight up.

Straight up, straight down, no swiping movements. My paint's doing fine with minimal scratching. I always brush off the bottom of the bag before mounting on the bike.

I wound up using a bit of touchup paint,  and applying a stick-on tank protector for now.  There are some other minor imperfections in the paint that I want to fix,  and it's cheap to do on a naked,  so this winter I'll respray.

If the scratch was caused by your belt while riding, then the scratch is invisible no?  So as long as you are sitting on the bike you don't have to worry about the scratch.

Put a peice of carbon fiber over it, they make self adhesive sheets. I think tank slapper has it offered on their website. That way it will not happen again.

Bagster has tank covers for the Z1000...the tank bag attaches...I have one on my XX, stays on year round.

If it's down to metal, you have to at least touch it up to prevent rust.  Then to save money just put a tank protector on it.  The more expensive way is to re-spray it but is the right way to fix it.

Same here, but as an extra precaution I always carry one of those thin buffing cloths for wax you can get from any auto parts store. Drop it on the tank then put the bag over it. Too thin to interfear with the magnets clinging to the tank but soft enough to prevent any scratching at all.

New tank isn't metallic so found a small tank bag that has suction cups..actually like it a lot and no scraping the paint at all.

I use that rubbery waffle stuff that people line their toolboxes with.  I put that down between the tankbag and tank.  Works well.  

My gsxr is pretty beat so i don't bother on that one.

Yeah I have a couple sheets of that cut to my tankbag footprint size. Works good. I think the stuff was like 2$ a roll at Wally World.
