Yes, yes, I know, the 2012 National has just been announced, what the heck am I doing babbling on about 2013????  Rolleyes

I don't know who does all the planning from year to year, if it's passed off from one person or persons to others or not, BUT, I was really hoping to attend an ST.n national at some point, and well, Arkansas is a little far off for me, given work/family/vacation/finance considerations, etc.

I was hoping to launch a tiny seed of thought for the 2013 National, and maybe suggest that we hold it somewhere in/near/around the PNW, perhaps WA, OR, ID??? Or maybe a little bit of each?

Anyhow, that's my 2 cents worth, let the ridiculing begin!  Bigsmile

I'd suggest hitting the Borscht Burn. Good people there and fantastic riding.

Obviously I missed that, thank you. South Dakota would be easiest for me, but I see it won't be for awhile...

I'm going to ask the people that attend this years national where they'd like to have it.  The rotation is stale.  New locales less bitching.

Perhaps, but SD' turn out last year was disappointing.  Sad

I'm sure some of that was the economy, but I agree that SD and CO are too close together to really make it distinctive (unlike AR and WV)

Hip with that, CO is an easy ride from here (nor Cal) Montana works well too.

Steamboat Springs, CO? June 15/16 the weekend following WCRM or June 23/23 two weekends after WCRM?
We should really decide a date, and soon. That might determine location and lodging availability.

Hahaha, that's a good one I haven't heard for a long time...

I too have to file a vacation plan very early in the year to get things approved.  I'd like to attend this event as the biggest ride I've ever done, but circumstances at home that continue to deteriorate may prevent any more than my attendance in spirit.  Still, I can dream...

Yes, yes, that's the question...let's start planning a loose agreement of gathering somewhere and work out the details as we go.

Well its a shame if you can't make it, no matter if you hold the event or not.

To everyone else , don't give up its early yet. Heck I don't even know if I can get the time off to go yet, as my boss is being a extra large asshat this year about approving vacation picks.  Rolleyes

This sounds really good.  At least a starting point.  I presume that the details from last year are available somewhere here from a thread that's left over.  Even if no body gets things organized any better, we could simply use all that information for this year...I can't commit because of an issue at home but this is a good starting point in my un-experienced opinion.

A dictator needs to step up.

This has proven quite effective here in Region 6.

East coast attitude need not apply. Wink

Winter Park no good. Too high. Might still be snow and some people will suffer from altitude sickness. Lodging is likely more expensive then Gunnison, Montrose, Custer, etc.

Gunnison ~ 8000'

Winter Park ~ 9000'
- less than 10 miles from Berthound pass.
- close to Rocky Mountain National Park.
- peak to peak highway

aside from altitude it steers us away from an area we've literally ridden to death.

I'll be riding about 2,000 miles just to get there, so the local roads don't mean that much to me.
Having said that, if it ends up somebody takes the reigns and makes it happen at Winter Park, I'll still likely show up.

So what about lodging, food, and most important, beer?
Are these things within walking distance?

Edit:
A quick check reveals the only hotel under $130 a night is booked for those days.

I just called  http://alpineredlodge.com/ at Red Lodge. This might be an excellent option. Nice place and Trish was super friendly and they are motorcycle friendly. The rates are as follows:
Single room $105 a night
Double $115 a night
Camping on site $35 for a two person tent
All rates include a FULL HOT BREAKFAST each morning.
There is an area where we can have BBQ, cook our own food, or they also cater everything form hot dogs and hamburgers to full steak dinners.
There is a motorcycle wash area with soap, water and towels.
Walking distance to http://redlodgeales.com/
And best of all, you get to ride Bear Tooth Hwy!

Sounds good to me. If we want to do this, I'll set up the hotel and reservations. We'll have to decide about dinner and t-shirts. If somebody wants to take that on, that would be awesome. I don't do artsy stuff.

Gunnison Inn and I think it was a days inn right next door.

We stayed at the Day's right next door, they treated us very nicely  (big rooms, decent price).

Doubt I'm going to have time off in June this year, so I hope you all have fun.

You all realize Beartooth is a LOT farther North than Colorado.
It is Excellent riding,  close to Yellowstone, and fairly cheap.

It's actually close enough to me that I'd probably make it between work assignments.

I won't knock your efforts for red lodge, but I found the winter park hotel I stayed at ( America's best value sundowner) for $72 a night. It's run by a retired immigrant family which were very nice.

Montana would be a cool (literally) venue in the grip of summer. I wouldn't mind hearing a few more 'you betcha' and 'eh?'.

If I have the cash and time, I would like to see Montana....
