I've got an '01 K1200RS.
The rear brake is kinda soft - and the pedal slowly goes down... unless I STAB the brake pedal down.
That tells me (son of an auto mechanic, long time shade tree mechanic) that the master cylinder needs to be rebuilt.
I've worked on brakes before.  Cars, trucks and bikes.  I have a brake hone.
So...  I call the dealer for a rebuild kit...  they say there's no kit...
What are my options?!?
I'm really hoping for some good decent news...  ST.N don't fail me now..

Definitely do something about it. Besides for the obvious reason, you don't want any brake fluid contaminating stuff that shouldn't be contaminated.

Do they sell the rebuild kit or are you saying I really do need to buy a whole master cylinder?

New, used and new-take-off parts as well as rebuild kits and maintenance stuff.  I've ordered a bunch of oilhead stuff there.  Worth looking around in to see if they've got what you need.

Beemer bone yard is a good source for parts.  Don't discount the possibility of a pin-hole in a line somewhere though.  My '98 RT was showing similar symptoms when it had a small in the line hidden away near the tripletree. It ook me a while to find using a bright flashlite and having someone else look while I actuated the brake.  The hole was allowing just enough fluid to escape to let the lever (front brake) creep down but not enough to make a big mess.

There are also some online classifieds. One that comes to mind:

http://marketplace.ibmwr.org/ads/kbps

(I already checked it -- none listed right now.)

Thanks for the link, and for checking.
I just ordered a used master cylinder from BeemerBoneYard (and some oil filters).

I gotta say that this lack of basic maintenance parts puts a sour taste in my mouth.  I was kinda thinking of trading in the K12 on a F800... but now...

I know that my K12's rear master cylinder was redone at some point. It may have been done under warranty -- I don't remember at this point. I also don't recall if it was rebuilt or replaced. (If under warranty it was probably replaced.)

There are enthusiast websites specific to BMW flying bricks like ours. A bit of Googling will turn them up.

I hope the used master cylinder works out for you.

I got the used master cylinder and got it on.
The Clymer says to bleed it from the ABS control unit...   but it doesn't say where that is!!
The section to remove the control unit basically says to take apart half the bike (both side covers to exhaust!), but STILL doesn't say where the unit is.
Can someone just tell me where the ABS control unit is?
