Share your riding plans here if you wish.   Always good to have someone watching your back on long distance rides.

Let us know what day your leaving and when you expect to arrive.  If you don't arrive by your planned day and your stranded in an unknown area, we'll know where to start looking for ya!

Jason

Star and I are leaving Colorado on Sunday and plan on arriving in E.S. by mid-day monday at the latest.

Leaving Saturday and arriving when I get there.  Hopefully before everything start.

Also plans are subject to change.  So I provided provide a link to my Spot locator.  If I am not moving in the middle of nowhere something is up.

I'm taking the Interstate down through Tennessee on Sunday.  Plan to stop just past Memphis for the night.  Next day (Monday) will be more scenic via US-63 and 412....getting me to the hotel by noonish.

We're leaving in 30 minutes.

Tomorrow we are planning to climb Mount Washington in NH.  After that we're heading to SouthEast OH, then WV, Cherohala Highway, Barber MC Museum and Eureka Springs.

Reservations are made for Tuesday night in ES but may try to get there Monday night.

In case you're asking, the shortest route from my house to ES is 2,000 miles.  This trip will be between 5 and 6 K miles.

See you in ES.

I left Az Saturday and arrived in D.C. last night (this morning) at 1:00.  Staying with my brother through Fri and then heading for Eureka Springs on Saturday.  My reservations are for Monday.  Had to cut out Blueridge Pkwy yesterday.  Now I have to choose between BRP or Deals Gap area on the way to AR.  Don't know when or if I'll be this far east again.Suggestions?

To do BRP from the bottom of Skyline (where the road starts free) to its terminus in NC, you'll take all day, but it's worth it to do at least once.  From there, Deal's Gap is in the neighborhood...spend a half day playing?

I don't know your ride plan to know if this will hurt your plans for arrival at ES.

Thanks.   That looks doable.

I may leave D.C. some time Friday to get as much of that in as I can.  This is a moto vacation, after all.  I'd like to be closer than 500 miles to Eureka Springs Monday morning.

I rode the north half of BRP today.  Just gorgeous. Landed in Bristol for the night.

Crossing Tennessee tomorrow.   Considering  going to Tunica for tomorrow night. That'll make an easy day to ES Monday.

Damn, you're probably an hour or so from me.

Too bad my route mandates a straight shot to Memphis.

Glad you enjoyed the roads.  I'll be in Memphis-ish tonight.  Hotels were too damn much with crappy reviews...I'm staying at a casino about 20 min south of Memphis in Mississippi.

IF ANYONE IS IN MEMPHIS TONIGHT (SUNDAY) I MAY NEED YOUR HELP.

I hope this isn't what I think it is, but my voltmeter was showing low voltage this afternoon.  At first, I figured the battery was at max charge and the R/R was clamping down on the voltage to avoid an overcharge, but I'm lucky to see it go above 13.0.

I replaced the R/R this winter.  I tested my stator coil (not that it couldn't have just begun to fail).  Everything ran fine until this afternoon.  While last time this happened, it was a loose wire to the voltmeter that produced the wonky readings, I long since did the wiring to supposedly fix that.

I have no multimeter readily available to confirm if the voltmeter is reading true....it's wired via Fuzeblock to the battery directly.

I'm in Tunica, MS at the Fitz Casino/Hotel.  My cell number is 423-217-2617.  I'm paying for Wi-Fi (grr), but the cell phone will be more reliable to reach me at any time.

I don't want to head home tomorrow.  My plan is to go to the rally and if need be just camp out in town for 2 days and go straight home...salvage what I can from this trip.

Still, I'd like to have someone with me JUST IN CASE.

My planned route was to leave Memphis via I-55 to US-63 to US-412 to Eureka Springs.  I'll gladly change those plans, but I'm looking for anyone leaving the Memphis area tomorrow morning.  Call my cell and we can set up a time/place for a meet.

If it looks like the stator is dying, I may be looking for anyone going home via I-40/I-81 into Virginia (or as far as possible).  This way if I break down, I won't be completely stranded.

***

Hotel maintenance guy let me use his multimeter.  Voltmeter reads true.

11.7v and not budging when I rev the motor up to and over 5K.

HID lamps make it hard to tell if the system is charging or not.

Noteworthy Point:  Even at  11.7v, HID headlight came on w/no problem, cranked and started w/no problem or the HID blinking (often result of voltage drop the capacitor hasn't yet built up enough reserve to compensate for)>

Wish we were closer to help.  MacGyver says you need a new stator.  He asks if you ohm checked the stator to ground?

If you were in Kansas we'd be able to pick you up.

Sadly, I hard-wired in the stator when I changed the R/R (after testing stator output).  Without some sharp pins or a soldering iron, I can't readily check stator output or continuity.

And if I need a new stator, I can't just get one and have it installed....part has to be ordered.

Well, damn.  I decided against Tunica and just meandered through Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.  Stopped for the night in Smith's Grove, about 20 miles east of Bowling Green.

The good news is that I've been contacted and will be hooking up with a couple other ST.N members so I'm not on my own tomorrow.  I gotta catch up to where they stopped, but if I can do that, it'll go smoother afterward....I hope.

I'll pick up a battery charger at Wal-Mart tomorrow....if I have to limp to ES on that, I can.  Once there, I'll have 2 days to figure out what is wrong or arrange a way to get the bike (and myself) home on Thursday.

I've been on the road for eight days now and just today, I may have gotten it right.

Garmin BaseCamp totally pissed me off last night.  After an hour, I still didn't have my route for today even close.  Grrrr.  Went to bed without a plan.  I slept quite well anyway, thank you.

Ended up just meandering through Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky; planning about 50 miles at a time, taking some suggestions from locals I met at a gas stop.  I rode some roads this morning that rival destination roads back home but are just what country roads are here.  Awesome.

After Cumberland Falls I hit the freeway and it felt a mile wide after the narrow country roads I had been on.  The VFR got a few compliments today, so she was feeling frisky.  I had been moving around enough throughout the day I was still feeling pretty fresh (without any advil?), so I was able to just tuck and click of some good slab miles to end the day.

Easily one of the best days I've had on two wheels.

I'm about 20 miles east of Bowling Green tonight (not a cold beer to be had).  Looks like about 400 miles to ES tomorrow.  See some of you then and the rest Tuesday.

Ride safe.

That certainly IS a thought....I'd have to find a way to ensure it CAN NOT come loose or shift off the seat.

I have my homemade "jumper cables" (leftover house wiring...heavy gauge...one red wire, one black).  Made those because standard jumpers are too bulky and clumsy to use on MC batteries.

For all things considered, you can remove the original battery and use the space for the cable connections.  Buy what ever 12 volt battery with more than 500 cranking amps will fit.  Get a set of 4 wrachet straps and make sure its nestled against the top case.

I'm going with an easier option.  Tried to get to a Wal-Mart...only got half way before it was low enough to stop and check.  Never started back up.  No stores near by.  Checked around and I'm renting a pickup truck.  Get a ramp and some straps, and I won't have to worry about the battery.

I could get a day rental to run about to try the car battery idea, but if it didn't work, I'd be right back where I started.  I even thought of renting an econobox and just come back with my truck and trailer, but station owner wouldn't go for that and there is nothing within pushing distance.  A day or so...maybe, but not the time needed to come back with my equipment.

As it is, I'm lucky that the rental company had someone in the area to pick me up and a truck is already available.   I might be en route to ES around noon.
