EDIT:

ESTN 2013 will be based at the Capra Inn Motel in Hancock, NY from Sept 20 - 22. This a modest sized hotel, so make your reservations NOW!

Skee is leading the logistics charge for this gathering and has started a thread here:

www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,78408.0.html

This was the original discussion thread, before lodging and dates were firmed up. There might be some useful info on the area buried in here...

==================================================
Since riding season is winding down here in the mid-Atlantic, thoughts turn toward adventures for next year. There has been some chatter about have a more northerly ESTN in 2013, so here is a suggestion:

Stay at Smith's Colonial Motel in Hancock, NY. Clean, cheap, right on the Delaware River,  a short way outside the (small) town of Hancock. We could pretty much take over the place I think. I have stayed there before (en route to ESTN in Lake Placid) and it's a nice family motel. Not a lot of dining options in Hancock, but I think we can manage for a couple nights.

http://www.smithscolonialmotel.com/

You have the Catskills to the east and the Poconos to the south for day rides.

http://goo.gl/maps/IR2KU

It seems that the Catskills are a busy place in the fall and ESTN seems to be settling into a September time slot (but that can change too). A quick Google search indicates that:

Hancock is home to the "Catskill Chill" jam band festival Sept 6-8.
Some sort of cruiser rally called "Catskill Mountain Thunder" is typically mid September at the Blackthorne Resort in East Durham.
Another cruiser rally called "Colors in the Catskills" is typically the end of the month (hosted at Hunter Mtn)

So maybe targeting the third weekend of September (20-22) would fit between the two cruiser rallies for less traffic on the roads.

I hear Vermont repaved a lot of their roads due to Irene.  Is southern Vermont an option as well?

I haven't really explored the Catskills either.  Hmmm.

Everything is an option :-) After some discussion, a benevolent dictator will emerge, declare the plan, and it will be so.

Just starting some discussion as I was planning a personal long weekend trip to stay in Hancock and ride the Catskills when it occurred to me that it might make a good ESTN location.

I cobbled up a nice all-day ride (325 miles) through the Catskills based on prior experience, epconde's road info (https://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,59299.0.html), misc Google searches, and chaos theory. I suspect most people doing the Catskills ride would do a route based heavily on the same roads as there aren't a ton of other options to work into the mix. Hawks Nest can be included, but it adds about 50 miles.

I also nominate Garry as B.D. :-) Hancock sounds great, and so does Sept.20-22---that's Jamie's birthday weekend, and she thinks a birthday ride would be just dandy.

BUT...You've already got me paranoid about Catskill roads being clogged with cruisers. Is the fact that there's no established cruiser meet that weekend reasonable assurance the roads will be fairly chrome-free? :-)

My guess is that it will be fine. I've ridden a circuit similar to that up there a couple times, around the reservoirs, and traffic was very light with the exception of some of the towns.
Just a very few bikes, and they were mostly ST bikes, Beemers and shit believe it or not.

In my limited experience, the main roads and the cafes in little towns like Phoenicia will be crowded, but the squirmy twistie side roads that we will be riding are fairly deserted, leastways when I've been up there.

I just don't know where we can find a reasonably priced resort type hotel in that neighborhood.

The cruiser meets tend to be located on the east side of the park. There are tons of county roads up there that probably see very little traffic. I'm sure some are bombed out goat paths, but I bet there are some real gems up there too. We'll need some local guidance on where the good bits are.

I've been in the area before. Stayed in N.E. PA and Reinbeck. There is a mc friendly campground on the Deleware River north of Port Jervis, too. I'll go where ever it is but I prefer the Adirondacks and Vermont. Was in Vermont this fall. A lot of new bridges and fresh asphalt but also so work left to be done.

I have not been on the forum for a while and just saw this posting.  I am just a little over an hour from Hancock and will be able to help with some of the logistics if Hancock is selected for 2013 ESTN. That being said, the area tends to be busy throughout the summer as you mentioned. The area is apparently big on Fly-Fishing attracting people from near and far, not to mention other outdoors events. The other downside is that they have limited accommodation with Smith's Colonial Motel being one of the better ones, located about 2.5 miles from town or services (food, gas...). Hunter Mt area is also an option if you're looking to stay with the Catskill region.  You don't want to go to Blackthorne "Resort", my tent is better than their rooms.

Someone might want to check on Oneonta, NY for a possible location.  When my family and I were back to that area a couple of years ago, we stayed there at just about the same time this rally is planned.  Plenty of hotel space for fairly cheap, also restaurants and bars within walking or easy riding distance.  Looked to me to be a pretty good location for a meet, but I am not sure about e roads in the area.  The ones we were on between there and Cooperstown were not bad. However, looking at maps it appears that the ones south of it might be pretty good?

We took a tour of that place while we were back.  I am not a fan of real hoppy beer so I didn't really find one that I liked, but it was still a cool place to visit, and I would reccomend stopping there to anyone that has an interest in beer brewing.  Not to worry though, we did find a couple of hole in the wall bars that served some good beer and food, so we still had a good time.

Be nice if that date sticks, because I already got some vacation time booked, and right now the weather forecast for that weekend is warm & sunny.   Regardless of when it ends up being, I'll ride if I got the time.

Hi Garry,

I hope you are making your way above water by now. Here is an option for the ESTN if you're still in the decision making process:

Rodeway Inn
239 Forest Hill Dr, Kingston, NY 418 ft NE
(845) 331-2900
http://www.rodewayinnkingstonny.com

I believe it was recently renovated and changed ownership.  It's located at the inter-change of NY rt 28 and US209 close to NY Thruway Exit near the town of Kingston.

Skytop Steakhouse & Brewing Co. is located next door to it. The have live cover bands on the weekends.  http://skytop.moonfruit.com/#

Let me know if this an option so that I can get more details and do some of the leg work for you.

Not above water yet, but I'm not in charge either. Just offered a suggestion on a possible location.

The summer isn't looking good for me (exceedingly busy), so if someone wants to inquire about lodging somewhere, that'd be great. Won't hurt my feelings in the least.

I kinda liked the western Catskills location to avoid civilization, but I don't really care much where ESTN is at. It's mostly about the social stuff. I can ride twisty roads close to home.

Is the third weekend in September set as the date?

If so, can you remove the question marks from the thread title and replace with the dates?

The question marks are there because:

THERE IS NO PLAN.

THERE IS NO DATE.

THERE IS NO LODGING.

THERE IS NOTHING BUT A SUGGESTION

Sorry, but I am too busy to do anything with ESTN this year. So if you guys want an ESTN rally this fall, someone else will have to take the lead.

Hotel update - Haven't had a chance to follow up on too many calls - here's what I got so far.

Will call Smith's tomorrow, since email did not get a response.

Comfort Inn Goshen  $75/night+tax~ $85
OK reviews, more pizza places within a mile than you'll find on any street in Naples.

Days Inn Wurtsboro  $89/night+tax~ $101
Good reviews, restaurants within 2 miles

Both of these places are 20 miles south of Catskills.  I'd prefer to be on western edge, because it opens up possibility of riding into finger lakes region.  Problem is, there either aren't a lot of motels, or as you get up around Cooperstown, they get expensive.  My feeling is that $100/night will be a deterrent.  Don't have a lot of time to make a decision; it's almost June.

The 2 issues common to this area are 1) there are a lot of small motels and 2) rooms are relatively expensive.  Found a really nice Microtel for $127/night+13% tax

Smith's Colonial has a total of 16 rooms available.
They don't do groups - don't have group facilities - but aren't opposed to hosting us.
The manager really doesn't want to hold a block of rooms open for a group reservation - has a concern about missing other business, so we'd have to make a commitment soon.

But they are willing to give us a group rate, ~ $70/night inc tax.

16 rooms?  We would fill that no prob. Are they all avail. for that weekend at the moment?  Is there a DEC campground nearby for overflow?

I agree the western, near 17, end is good.

Smith’s has a total of 17 rooms; one is already booked for that weekend.  A total of 16 rooms are currently available.

There are a other motels around Hancock within a few miles of Smiths, such as Capra Inn Motel, Point Mountain Lodge.  I will get some group rates for us on Tuesday.  Twin Falls Campground has tent sites a few miles away.

The nicest looking to me is Bass Hancock House Hotel.  They sounded open to hosting a group event when I spoke to them on the phone, and all rooms are currently available.  A little on the $$ side, but they could host us all & have a bar, and dining & a bar available.
Standard rate is $145/night + tax – 32 rooms available.
“In downtown Hancock, but within walking distance of the Delaware River, this new hotel is designed to look and feel considerably older: [Rooms are] good-sized and tastefully appointed with Mission furniture and top-quality linens -- and are quite a good deal. The hotel has extra features, such as Honest Eddie's Tap Room and the '50s-style Fannie's Cafe (serving breakfast and lunch) that make it especially appealing to groups and families that don't necessarily want to venture out for meals.”

This is beginning to look like a “Burger Run” scenario to me.  [Thx Garry, the love-hate thing with my Wee is still strong.  LOL]  In other words, we pick a main hotel, and anyone who can’t get a reservation there or wants a less expensive or nicer accommodations makes their reservation somewhere nearby.  The 3 motels listed in this post are within a mile of each other.

Any thoughts about that :pokestick: or are you guys all out riding  Headscratch

I don't know the region at all but as usual, a motel type where there is a large enough parking lot to hang out and tell lies is good.

From the pictures, the Capra Inn Motel looks like a one level motel with a parking lot big enough to hang out and the TripAdvisor ratings there are good.

The Bass Hancock House Hotel is right on the street but it looks like they have a parking lot in the back.

Had lunch at the Hancock House, on bike trip to Old Forge in the Adirondacks in 2010. Good lunch, and great bar with a good beer selection. Parking lot is in the rear. Hancock was a neat little town. Area is a very popular place for trout fishing.

Smith's is about 2 miles south of there on 17. not much between Smith's and Hancock.

i may just make this ESTN gathering.

I feel this would work well. But we would still need a nearby food place as the one here is not a open for dinner place.

That link came from Google.  I noticed the same thing before I posted it.  I figured maybe one of you might know something about it.   Could be wrong, or it could be that they own the campsite and the link goes to their business address.  Google does that sometimes.  I'll give the campsite a call Tuesday and get some info.

I'm feeling frustrated with this search - best I can come up with so far

Capra Inn-Motel, 521 W Main St Hancock, NY 13783
Group Rate for a single occupancy is $50/night + 13% tax (~$56.50 total), double occupancy $60/night + tax, triple+ is $65/night + tax.
Has 17 rooms all with double beds.  Is motorcycle friendly.  The manager rides.  Gets good reviews on various sites.  All rooms currently available.  Nice parking lot.
Campers – not confirmed; can’t promise – possibility there may be tent sites available nearby.
Dining options – good restaurant open for B,L,D ~0.5 mile across river, also other options in town
May be the best option I can find in this area.  My thought is that it is too small for our size group; assuming there is a good turnout this year.

Main shortcoming is a shortage of rooms.   Folks who don’t get a reservation end up having to take a room nearby.   Overflow option is the Bass Hancock Hotel – 20 rooms currently available – other end of town about 1 mile from Capra.  Group rate of $135/night  + 13% tax = $ 152.55 total

Other options include Oneonta; room rates there are typically $100+/night.

What do you think?  SUGGESTIONS?  New location?

Maybe there just aren't enough rooms to handle our group in the western Catskills. A couple years ago we took over one big motel and overflowed into another in Lake Placid. I don't remember how many. Maybe someone else does and can confirm that is the norm for NY.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Unless someone can come up with a better plan, it sounds like the Capra Inn Motel is the winner. 17 doubles should cover 30 people. Overflow can go to the spendier Bass hotel at the other end of town (0.8 miles away) or opt for the quieter, more rustic surroundings of Smith's Colonial (2 miles south of town).

BTW, what weekend did you inquire about? I think that the weekends of Sept 21/22 and 28/29 were both on the table.

When I was organizing the Lake Placid ESTN, I had the same issue with lodging: hotels are either too small for a group of 50 or more expensive than we want (>$100 night).

Thanks for doing the research Skee. I'm just swamped with work/life right now.

Another option:

Southern Catskills

COMFORT INN & SUITES GOSHEN  NY
$75 per night + 13% tax = $85

They can provide 25 (or more) rooms as needed.  [Motel has 96 rooms.]  Doesn't appear to be tent sites nearby.  Good reviews, dining options somewhat limited but there are lots of pizza places within a mile

Doug - Garry - Anybody?

Does anybody know how many people attended or how many rooms we had at ESTN 2012?

I looked back and estimated maybe 20 rooms, because some of us doubled-up.

How about ESTN at Lake Placid?  I think it was close to the same number - as I recall, most of us were able to cram into the bed of a pickup for a ride into town.

Reason is, if attendance has historically required 15 - 20 rooms, then we could use the Capra motel on western side of Catskills and probably be OK.  Nice thing about the Capra, we could pretty much have it to ourselves Saturday night.  If we need 20+ to 25 or more, then we should choose Comfort Inn on southside.

Personally, although I like the location of the Capra better, if I had to call it today, I'd go with the Comfort Inn.

Any thoughts?

Recent history is to expect about 50 people with many doubling up in rooms and some of them camping (when available). Marietta ESTN was lightly attended. Sparta, Marlinton, and Lake Placid were in the 50 range I think (despite bad weather).

Since this one seems to be generating reasonable interest given its proximity NYC, Boston, Philly, etc it would not surprise me to see 50-ish people show up if the weather doesn't suck. Minimum of 30 people (15 rooms) would be my guess.

It's a tough call because the Hancock option can't fit everyone into one motel if attendance is good, but it's a better spot to ride from. The larger motels are going to be closer to civilization.

Maybe a quick poll (one week) to see how many people really plan on attending?

In Placid we filled one Motel, Econolodge I think.  We had every room except one and it wasn't a small place.  Plus some overflow across the street and a few other places.  Most of us had to ride through a downpour to get there.  That's commitment.

I used Google Earth to scope out the parking lots and locations, & TripAdvisor for reviews.  Fairly accurate on the average.
I was thinking of looping up through there this weekend myself.  Good excuse for a ride, if I can free up a day.
A few things on the Honey-Do List I have to find an excuse to get out of.

I'll put a poll up.

Thx Shil

I have a nice proposal on a nice lodge in Windham/Hunter Mt area (north central Kats).  Good rates.  Near town pub.  What could not be right about that?

My concern is their cancellation policy.  14-days advance notice required for cancellation.

Is that a deal-breaker as far as you guys are concerned?

If not, I'll add it to the poll.  There are always a few last minute changes at every meet, especially if the weather looks great (like Jack who suddenly found out he didn't have to work OT on the weekend after all Twofinger yeah I remember you at Submarine Fest) , and a few cancellations (like Shil) who are forced to cancel because of a change in plans even though the weather was looking great.  That puts you on the hook for room charge if you can't find someone to take your room.  And let's just say you are forced to cancel within the last 2 weeks and the weather looks crappy.  You take a chance on getting stuck with the bill.  It's not a big risk from my perspective because my schedule is fairly firm, but I know some of you have demanding work schedules and travel on tight budgets and that is my concern.

Hey Guys,

I have not been on the forum in a while. It looks like we don't have a date or location for the event. May I sugguest having it conincide with Octoberfest and MAX BMW - Colors in the Catskills scheduled for October 5&6 at Hunter Mt.  A great opportunity for members with German heritage to dust off that old pair of Lederhosen and show us what you're working with. We could either have it at Hunter Mt or at one of the surrunding towns. The only problem is that hotel rates are on the high side between September and October due to peak fall foliage time in the area, but there will be no lack of beer and entertaimnet.

Okay...while I'd be okay with a meet in the Catskills...I'm gonna throw a wrench in the thread (*clang!*) and suggest a completely different option, mainly for the purely personal reasons that I've never been there: the Finger Lakes region of NY.  Bigsmile

I've been hearing for years about how beautiful it is...and how awesome the towns are. But that whole area is completely off the beaten bath to anywhere---which is probably why I've never been there (unless that's your destination, you pretty much have to go out of your way to get there).

I'm sure all the auto racing junkies will go on and on about how they've been to Watkins Glen a zillion times and its always mobbed...but that's just one place in a region bigger than the Catskills.

SO...I'm sure lotsa folks here have ridden all over that area...so if anyone thinks the riding sucks and the Catskills are a lot better, feel free to strike the idea down.  Smile

In general (and maybe this is because I'm too accustomed to West Virginia, Western Virginia, and Western NC) I'm a fan of going places where there are basically NO PEOPLE. Less traffic, cheaper hotels, better scenery. Consider the map below...

Again, I know nothing about NY riding outside the Catskills...but just looking at the map, that large area to the right of I-81 looks like there's a lot of nothing with some potentially nice roads!

Scott,

The final plan for ESTN 2013 will be announced shortly by this years benevolent dictator, SKEE. It *will* be the Catskills on Sept 20-22 in either Hancock (Capra Inn) or Goshen (Comfort Inn).

You can ride those areas you posted on your way to/from ESTN if you want. I've been to the area right of the Finger Lakes on the way to Lake Placid/Vermont. Mostly straight roads through farm country as I recall.

That's fine---I only posted the alternate location because it appeared as though both the location and hotel were still up in the air (as per BigBen's post above, which nobody responded to). I'm perfectly happy with the Catskills—as long as we're reasonably sure the roads won't be clogged with cruisers and tourons from the Greater NYC region.  Smile (And I did see Frank's comment that the back roads are generally clear.) At my age, I admit I'm becoming less and less tolerant of other vehicles on roads I ride.  Lol

My vote is the Capra. Goshen is getting scarily close to the supernova of traffic that is the Greater NYC region...

You'll prolly run into more traffic around the Finger Lakes than Goshen.  The advantage of western location is it affords access to the Lakes or the Daks if you are so inclined - as others have stated - I think there is a lot of flatland in between either.  The southern area has generally quite back roads - interesting but not particularly challenging - long as you stay away from eastern edge. You could even visit "the Eye".

So I guess this as a good as any place to post my follow-up comments.

I had a great time!  Weather cooperated!  Great route on Saturday.
I finally got to see the "eye" (or vag) of the Catskills.
(Google maps 2515 Platte Cove Rd., Elks Park, there is a street view)

Sorry I don't have any pics to post.  Maybe some others do.

Many Thanks to Skee for doing the legwork

Jamie and I just rolled in around 7:30pm after a fun but chilly ride. Neither of us really came prepared for cold weather, so the last hundred miles was kinda grueling.

GREAT meet! I'll post more later (with pics)...

Happy at home! A KLR does not have a ten-hour seat.
Thanks, Skee, for putting this together.

Ha...yeah, me too. I took almost no pics. Just a couple worth showing (below)...Jamie took about 300 from the back of the bike while riding...but they aren't where I can post them here (yet)...she spewed them all (with zero editing or selection) into a Facebook album.  Lol I'll grab her SD card and post the best here later!
